not him but i actually did just turn 18 and i probably have 2k+ hours in CoH
i doubt anything will come of this, ncsoft is the devil
Holy fucking shit. I miss my 50 Stalker Akimoto Yuuko. Made her when I was 11.
Mastermind was amazing.
>tfw I went full retard and accidentally sent my robots into a giant mob and got my entire team killed
Posting my old screenshots because I'm giddy there is a CoH thread on /v/.
Cold is the lack of energy, you wanna bring on the heat death of the universe? What a fucking dick
>you will never party hard at pocket d
Dear god, I'm actually looking forward to all of my characters being wiped and having to re-level my characters.
Glorious rebirth of GOAT MMO.
I may even bite the bullet and learn how to RP Macro with Mastermind Minions.
Hamidon in Pocket D. The developers were fucking around so much that day.
>they're still trying to get CoH back
Holy shit I thought they gave up already.
Too bad they're dealing with the EA of gooks.
>not using flight to freely explore the map, including outside the boundries
I remember my villain guild applauding me in getting every single exploration badge when the game launched and thus activating all the teleport units like a day after CoV's launch at level.. what, ten? eleven? Whenever actual Flight became available. It was so bloody long ago I forget now.
Cuppa Jo. Anyone remember her?
>not Club .. holy fucking shit I don't even remember anymore I am a bad CoH fan
Ghost Widow was at one of the parties.
I remember when it wasn't called Pocket D and was just a generic warehouse interior with poor lighting and laser beams.
I was taking selfies so I could remake my chars if the game was revived.
FOK YEAH VIRTUE @MadInferno reporting.
>not making mad dosh being a teleporting taxi
Don't get your hopes up people.
Other than destroying amazing MMO's, NCSoft is also known for never ever selling their old stuff and shutting down any attempt at trying to rebirth even through original source code.
city of heroes blows dongs
bring back exsteel instead
Kinetics is objectively the best.
>Standing around AP handing out free SB to people
I had stopped playing long before the end of the world, like 2007 or so, but I was still sad to hear it ending.
>mfw this Rikti wanted to have a fucking knife fight
The Rikti were fucking crazy, man
I was flying around in Crey's Folly one day and found a group of them just blasting this old abandoned car.
>tfw neo /v/ is so god damn real
Thug is objectively the best Mastermind minion.
Mercenaryfags go and stay go
So what you're telling me is
You know that feel?
Flight was objectively best for a scrapper. The attack had a knock down that you could exploit in combat to stun-lock an enemy of your choice. 1v1 was trivial if you had faster cooldowns, and watching villains cry in agony as their dumb mastermind was pinned to the ground was priceless.
So I play a bit of Champions Online. What makes this game better?
I'm not trying to bash CoH, I honestly want to know since I never played it.
Better skill trees, mechanics, zones, dungeons. What made this game good?
Psonic/Energy Manipulation Blaster with Force Field spec for PFF
I loved watching people rage in pvp anlbout PFF BROKEN PLS GO
Just a reminder that everything NCSoft touches turns into liquid shit because the company is full of greedy beady eye'd hook nosed kikes.
>City of Heroes

>babbie doesnt know about CoH
>falls back on MUH BOARD CULTURE instead
Stay faggot and never change
>Babbie does know CoH
>still insists on MUH BOARD CULTURE
>age: 13 years old
So why exactly did they kill off CoH? What was the reason exactly?
The character creator for Champions Online was only a slight upgrade, which is saying a lot. And even then CoH put in the ability to customize the animations that your chracter uses.
The power system for CoH is MUCH easier to approach than Champions Online and the enhancements system was an amazing way to min-max characters.
Much more coherent introduction to the world and better quests, even at launch than Champions.
More content and the full separate villains game.
Going rogue actually added in quests where you can chose how to proceed and they would affect how your character advanced and what would open up for them. Even so far as switching from a hero to a villain and vice versa.
I personally loved when I grabbed Air Superiority and Flight on a Melee character and buttfucked ranged/flight easy mode kiddies thinking they could get free kills like low level PvE.
I wish I had spent more time playing this instead of sinking my MMO time into Champions Online, I hope we get this game back some how.
NRG boxing gloves are the best shit.
That's because Japanese hate all other asians, all asians hate all asians.
And I was a Scrapper.
I think that was just an issue spawns had sometimes. I caught this group of Elements breaking into.. nothing. This was during the transitional "construction" period before the buildings went up that Hellions could randomly torch.
and now Guild Wars 1
Theres reports that NCSoft is thinking of shutting down GW1
God damn it
Okay awhike ago me and another Paragon employee came to /v/ to discuss this.
I was a PR om the forums along with Lighthouse and other employee's
The truth of the matter was really Paragon studios/Cryptic wanting to move CoH franchise to another publisher due to NCSoft not having the best "interests"in line with the game. This entered a Dispute between NCSoft and the Dev's of CoH with which court hearings were filed and Cryptic lost to NCSoft.
The response after this was to shut it down to work on GW2 and other projects(this was NCSpft plan for YEARS with only Paragon Studios and Cryptic defending it)
With Cryptic out if the picture, some devs left for other projects and few stayed.
Its pretty shitty situation since then.
>getting a group of lowbies together and ferrying them around with Group-Flight
>turn off Group-Flight
No like seriously it why almost all CoH fans are upset as fuck when it was getting shut down.
The game was generating a profit for ncsoft and they just decided one day to shut it down. They still refuse to tell anyone why they did this and have turned down almost any and all offers to buy the IP because "We looked to sell the franchise multiple times, however, we were unsuccessful in finding a suitable partner that we thought would support City of Heroes' fans in a manner they were accustomed to for years to come"
They just hate us.
>Cryptic has nothing to do with CoH at that point since they sold the rights to the IP and an unlimited license to the engine
>Paragon was formed by NCSoft to make the game after Cryptic left
>somehow Paragon employees decide that it is a good idea to sue a massive publisher

>Be a kid

>Holy shit this could be the best thing ever
>Game constantly gets delayed
>Game confirmed as an MMO
>lose all interest
Alright, guys. I missed CoH sadly, only having witnessed life and death of EXTEEL. I have also played DC Online and Champion Online. What can you tell me about the game? If this game gets brought back, i would love to play it if it really is a whole different game. DC Online was bearable but a bit boring while Champions Online was REALLY bad. At least that's the way i remember it. If it matters, i LOVE customization in video games.
I was honestly surprised to see so many people actually caring when CoH shutdown. I only played it at a friends house and then a trial at my house and both times it seemed like shit, just like every other MMO ever made that isn't Tibia before the Brazilians overran it.
>Cryptic was FORCED to sell it away after LOSING a lawsuit with NCSoft
>Most of cryptic left NCSoft and CoH and the few who remained were assimulated into Paragon studios by NCSoft so they had JOBS
>NCSoft stopped giving a fuck and continued to work on other porjects with the intent on shutting down CoH once a project was near completion
>your a fucking retard and think tripfag is wrong
Dumbass pls go, even Lighthouse fucking said this
I don't even remember what those abbreviations mean, aside from pleb, but I'm just talking about suddenly dropping a bunch of lowbies from high the air for fun.
Why so serious?
>mfw I made a Spikes/Willpower character and made him look like that one guy from Naruto with the bone powers
Nigger ofc i did that.
Fuck i was the guy who showed players about the Snake Eggs PLing on Mercy Island til my coworkers found out about it and nerfed muh eggs ;.;
>tfw running earth brute for PLing
5 archetypes with an offensive power pool and a defense power pool to pick from. Apart from archetype, there was no restriction on what combination you used. Heroes and villains differed fairly significantly with heroes focusing more on cooperative play and villains focusing on aggressive play.
It was definetly a step behind CO for character model customization having less costume slots to edit and way less sliders (chest, hips, height and mass if I remember correctly) and in terms of powers you could pick a primary and secondary powerset (which could be attacks and defence, or support and dps, it depends on your role).
But the powersets were very diverse ranging from baseball bats and thuggish punching to swords made of fire and alien transformation and dimensional manipulation. Instead of gear you could augment your powers with bonuses like extra damage, less cooldown time etc and later on you would get additional power effects.
The world was diverse and the factions in the world well mostly very thought out and well designed. There was good variety for quests, bank robberies, super hero strike team missions and more. I'm missing a lot more stuff but I don't want to spend ages writing about it.
tl;dr cooler characters and actual content.
There was a shit ton of 'classes' called Archetypes.
But the thing was with each archetype you selected you were given the choice of a primary and secondary powerset and there were hundreds if not thousands of possible combinations you could choose from.
I can't list them all but just take a look.
The gameplay itself is somewhat dated as it is a pretty old game but it was solid and pretty fun to play.
Awwww shit son, that means I can bring back my mercs/storm mastermind?
He designed and built a weather device and uses it to do storm related things while his hired goons just shoot everyone else
>he does it for free
Wh-why would you ever screw with the powerleveling economy m8?
Do yiu want to watch the world burn?
SHEEEEIT i remember that shit, powerleveled 10 characters that way, and shit was easy too.
i still remember luck of the gamblers and purple recipes going for a several billions towards the servers closing too.
Oh god, you level 1 faggot, why didn't you just do the tutorial to get that extra level + power, not to mention the badge you can only get in that area
I can tell you that almost every attack in the game had 2 animations you could chose between at character creation.
CoH is a little hard to describe as there was just so much added by the end. But to give you an Idea on the hero side one of the first sets of missions involved you joining an almost 'Teen Titans' esque small-league superhero group. You go on missions with your little super team, and learn a bit about each of their personalities (I loved the fact that one of them actually straight abandons you in a misssion when things get hairy.)
You can actually make 5 different costumes for your hero, like if you wanted to addopt a team color scheme in addition to your normal one, and there were even 'costume change' specific emotes.
But to give you an idea of what CoH did that most other MMO's don't. They made it a point to add in things like being able to emote-commands to make your pets and stuff talk. It was complex enough that you could actually load in .txt scripts to actually have your character act out a scene if you wanted. Which was great when you saw a Zombie Mastermind yelling at his minions to stop talking about brains and get in a line or something.
Oh, and every content patch was like a new issue of a comic book, with plot details slowly moving forward. And not that pussy WoW 'nothing actually changes' shit either, they killed off their flag character near the end.
>tfw no 1. EM stalker on virtue
>tfw started so much shit with players in Pocket D over PvP shit
>tfw people raged at me on the forums and id let them rage bc itd be wrong to silence them with mod powers
Ya man, i made alot of players mad in the RP community hahaha
I remember reading about the game on a magazine a long time ago, it caught my eye due to the customization, sadly, i was reluctant about paying subscription for games and didn't play it.
Was it any good?
Man, fire/kin controllers were the fucking best
No-one can fucking argue that
Fire Imps, + speed boost, + siphon power + fulcrum shift = insanely fast sonic minions burning NPC's to death in 1 or 2 hits
Man, I was like 16 when I started in CoH and I got thrown into that whole PvP mess. I was so fucking confused and was awkward as shit, but damn was that shit fun back then.
I wouldn't be surprised if a few people are still assravaged over you. I wish I could remember their names.
The beauty of working with the Devs of CoH,you literally knew all the secrets/broken exploits and I am not going to lie
I Abused them ALOT but at the same time it helped out my co workers by finding them so they could patch.
Now if only they could fucking fix Force Field stats in PvP and economy pricing.
Fuck all that man
FREEDOM SERVER ISN'T FREE
Where my Freedom bros at?
I was Deepfreezer11 (made him when I was 11) and 'Lumina.
The game also seriously rewarded exploration, awarding badges and experience from simply exploring the map.
Powers were customizable far beyond just choosing two sets. You also had enhancements, which were one time use upgrades to improve things like accuracy, base damage, cost or cooldown. Powers had limited slots to which enhancements could be applied. There was a certain level of strategy in tailoring you enhancements to be appropriate to your playstyle.
Massive enemy encounters were frequent, usually on a 4 to 6 hour spawn time. Think of it as the super villain unleashing their giant monster on the city.
Each questline was an ongoing plot against a villain group. Instances were fun and engaging with selectable difficulty, though I don't know anyone who played on anything other than Invincible (enemy level +6).
Guilds were never better in any MMO, in my opinion. Someone else can elaborate on that, its making me sad to think about.
>just because I liked to help people
>taking muh business
Nigga, thats like going into a mobs area and giving the mob shops free protection from us.

>tfw people would be capslocking uncontrollable in Pcoket D about me
>tfw was no. 1 in arena rating for over a year
>tfw won the offical 2v2 tournament first time around
>tfw ran the PvP hard against Nigger SGs who would stack pocket healers
Bro we made SO MANY people angry and i was the main reason, becaus ei loved to pvp bitches no matter what
I miss my mastermind so much...
I wish Cryptic would make an actual sequel to CoH without fucking it up, like they did with Champions Online.
Superhero MMOs are an awesome concept, but no game has done a good job of it since city of heroes.
Hey Tripfag. Word on the grapevine is that Paragon did something that basically forced them to shut it down.
Know anything specific?
I saw your previous "truth" post but it don't seem as shitty as the impressions I've been getting.
Seriously. It was a shitty MMO that had you run through the same warehouses, caves and submarine tech bases and defeat enemies with the same animations. For fifty levels. The pvp was awful too, everyone got wrecked by blappers unless they stacked silly amounts of IO sets.
That level 50 defender will never find his team ;_;
City of Heroes was/is still one of the most unique MMOs out there. You could transition the game to a F2P system with all powers unlocked, but with cosmetic unlocks/crafting and you'd make a fortune. Make a majority of the costume pieces free, but the more fringe stuff and weapon pieces, power colors etc cost dosh or craftable/tradable.
The F2P system they had on release was overall pretty good but a bit too restrictive. I'm still fucking pissed at NCSoft though because literally a week before the game was announced to be shutdown I had bought some CoX funbux and NCSoft refused to refund me.
I left employment as PR after Cryptic pulled out. Lighthouse, myself and acouple others made formal posts about our resignation and that was it.
From what the other Guy who did the AmA on /v/ afew months back was hired by paragon studios after the cryptic leave. He said literally NCSoft just walked in and told them to pack there desks there all fired while they were midworking.
It was literally fucked
I miss my character, I forgot what his class was, but his powerset consisted of punches, strong punches, stronger punches, and buffs to his stats.
His name was Pistonfist Vince.
I'll miss my character, he was such a fucker
I think I had a bit of an edge problem back in 06
Nah i did free runs for SG members and guys who ran with me usually in pvp or in pocket D.
Just your bros, or if it was a slow night id offer free pl and discounts etc.
Warshade for life.
Would switch between all three forms like a boss, jump into a group Phased, take the alpha hit, drop phase, suck their energy, buff myself, hit my big AoE. Pop a few blues, resurrect a corpse as a fluffy, use corpse to heal me and restore end. Go squid form take out any stragglers, then tank groups in crab form until all that shit recharged.
Was really fun.
I think one of the best balancing aspects of the game was animations for attacks and the effects on combat.
When you use a skill in CoH, it has its own animation with its own properties. It checks for your position and then plays it and essentially 'locks' you into a position for it.
This meant that there were attacks with very large windups that were interuptable, and that sometimes it was wiser to use an attack with less animation to go through. Like if you were chasing an enemy and knew your attack wouldn't kill them and needed to keep moving.
Other times you would want an attack with a long animation (Shadow Maul comes to mind, a cone based punching attack) because you would regain a little bit of energy as it went on.
The biggest praising from game-play though comes from groups. EVERY class can do it's job. And by that I mean that it can do it's job damn near entirely with 0 support from other members of the team. It's amazing to see a game designed where a Tank is going into a boss encounter with minimal or even 0 healing from another team member.
This is why I loved that quick little hammerblow you could do with the flight set. It was fast as fuck and it had knockdown. CoH knockdown made shit BOUNCE. You bought your team a full one or two seconds to unleash hell, maybe stun or hold the damn thing. Plus, if they happened to be flying when you used it, there was bonus damage.
You could transition the game to a F2P system with all powers unlocked, but with cosmetic unlocks/crafting and you'd make a fortune. Make a majority of the costume pieces free, but the more fringe stuff and weapon pieces, power colors etc cost dosh or craftable/tradable.
It was fine as it was, it didn't get shut down because of profits (there's articles online stating how it was making big profits even up until it got shutdown). Bring it back as it was or return to it's sub to play roots, f2p a shit.
>same-y instances and shitty balance
Maybe if we're talking like, pre-City of Villains era.
But the game really, really started to hit its stride near the end of its life. The game's lore started becoming legitimately interesting to read, missions and bosses were top-notch and every new powerset added was better than the last. I'm so salty because the latest shit they were going to add looked SO GOOD.
>tfw your first cape
>tfw trying to decide the best aux powers for your character
>tfw you ran through a dungeon for the first time
>tfw discovering secrets in bank heist mode
like tears in the rain
time to die
Fuck time bust out my external for this, I knew screencaping my villians and heroes was a good idea. Going to post a few.
This is the one I played the most, my undead zombie waifu. She's all fucked up in the face so she wears a gas mask to cover it up. Cliche I know but I love it.
Champions Online has a better one.
>tfw you'll never have CO's character creator and CoH's everything else
I vaguely remember her, I think she had wings and duel wield kanatas.
Look CoH/V literally was a MMORPG of its own.
In every fucking server you had depth with EVEY SINGLE TOON ANYONE EVER MADE
from there bios which was god tier to the way the looked and changed to the holidays.
You had people literally do Costume Contests and give free shit away and everyone loved it, wont see that in WoW
You had insane amounts of skillsets and abilities that made you FEEL like a SUPER player.
Fuck dude you didnt have mounts you had fucking TELEPORT and real Flight or you could jump over the tallest building
You had REAL guild achievements from simple badges toventire bases personally designed by you and you could hold GUILD VS GUILD BATTLES IN YOUR BASE
raids wwre against gsint monsters that took 100s of players to defeat like Hamedon
Cool missions, a in game COMIC BOOK SETTING
Cool in depth enemies always interesting folklore
ACHIEVEMENTS/BADGES THAT GAVE YOU BOOSTS OR ABILITIES FOR WORKING YOUR ASS TO GET THEM
YIU COULD MAKE YOUR OWN MISSIONS YOUR OWN STORIES TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS
Literally everything abiut CoH was god tier fun noone i have ever met who played it hated the game or did not get sucked into it.
The only thing that coh lacked was mission level looks. It was usually the same settings throughout the game which kinda was lame but so little bad versus so much GOAT
Prove me wrong /v/
His super power is punching everyone in the face. His story is that his pants got stolen and vowed revenge against the world.
Maybe if PW hadn't taken over publishing we would finally see the big updates they had started talking about in 2012.
Bouncing motherfuckers was always so fun with that power. Had a Brute with Energy Melee that had the exact same animation and roughly same damage. So I'd just do it twice in a row and see a motherfucker drop.
Knockdowns/Knockback were two separate mechanics and I absolutely loved that that was a thing.
So if CoH is revived /v/'s guild is going to be the Wonderful 100 right?
I also made a crapply make Pigmask.
>Maybe if we're talking like, pre-City of Villains era.
I came in at the start of CoX. I had a plant/thorn Dom and three crabs.
I spent the entire game going through the same instances with little change. The power pools were hit or miss depending on what you picked, like EN/? being amazing for blasters but Elec/? being shit because endurance drain was terrible.
By the end of the game I was farming clockwork missions or something so I could gain enough infamy for more IO sets.
I maintain the opinion that anybody who wants this game to come back is having a serious case of nostalgia goggles. The game had charm but it was legitimately horrible. Even as far as MMO's go.
My friends friends dad was a hardcore player. I can't remember his character name, but he was an Elvis-based tanker. My understanding was that Circa 2008ish he was THE best tank on his server. I came over to his house and saw him solo a maximum difficulty zone without taking any damage. My brain exploded out of my skull and became plastered to the ceiling watching him.
Try this if you still have the harddrive. From the guys that made speccy and ccleaner. I was able to recover 6 years old screenshots from an hdd that I installed several windows and linux distros on over and over.
>basing anything off what happens on a /v/ thread
You're forgetting that you could also select the difficulty of your missions for greater rewards.
And that you were given moral missions that ended with you having to make a choice that could actually affect what would happen to your character later and what missions were available for you.
And the little details like civilians you could click on and see talk about other PC's or facts about the world.
There's just to much GOAT in this game.
This thread makes me want to cry
I miss CoH so much ;.; i just want to go back to my mmorpg
Why do WoWfags get there shitty game but i cant have mine? Fuck life
More people want to make fantasy worlds or just flat out play it safe by following more prominent MMOs which have always been fantasy.
It's too bad because CoH had all sorts of settings and themes mixed in, there was nothing to stop you playing your Ye Olde Knight alongside a Cyberpunk Nazi Squad Leader. Sci-fi Fantasy Modern settings really are the best, enough of shitty tired Wood Elves and Mountain Dwarfs.
>Thats a pretty vague and subjective answer. Care to elaborate?
I dislike MMORPGS with a passion, because they seem to drag on with generic creation, stingy players, and most of all bland moves.
City of Heroes did the exact opposite of that and shit on the competition all the way. Everything was unique and creative, the players were bro-tier for the most part, and the powers were fun to utilize.
Excellent anon, now i have to reinstall all of it and play again
I don't think you played it near the end of its life.
I don't dispute early CoX being very grindy, but we're talking about early 2005 MMOs. Everything was grindy back then, even moreso than modern games.
But 2009/2010 City of Heroes? Glorious. It's not nostalgia at all, it was a legitimately fun game to play especially with friends. It paved the way for many MMOs and had a lot of shit most MMOs never dared touch. Mission creation, extremely robust character creation, story, sidekicking. Not to mention being one of the few non-fantasy MMOs.
>tfw having to fucking learn a certain pattern of questgivers to unlock that one contact to get a special rare mission from and never completely the mission for free repeats
I also forgot, IF YOUR FRIEND IS MAXXED LEVEK AND YOUR JUST STARTING ITS OKAY HE CAN BOOST YOUR ASS TO LVL 49 AND YIU CAN PLAY HIS MISSIONS WITH HIM AT LVL 1 AND GET MAD XP
Sidekick mechanic was THE SHIT
How about some wood dwarfs and mountain elves instead?

Am I a retard or is it impossible to find the music for this game? Setting the mood for areas aside, some of those tracks are good pieces of listening
When can I preorder this WoW Killer? Will I get access to a exclusive Diesel Punk Engineer Minotaur race?
thank god i have the character creator so i can remake my old guy
i miss this shit
Too bad there was NO FUCKING LOOPING OPTION.
Seriously, you enter a new area, music plays for about 20 seconds, then silence. No way to keep it going. No battle music either. It made shit so boring.
I complained about it on the forums and literally no one agreed with me. "I turn off the music anyway :^)"
Speaking of which, the playerbase was the biggest group of dickriders I ever saw. The devs could do no fucking wrong. The forums were a bigger hugbox echo chamber than fucking lebbit. It's why the game saw so little progress in terms of core improvements in 8 goddamn years. They were FINALLY starting to fix things when NCSoft shitcanned it. The fucking irony.
And if the Sidekick mechanic wasn't enough. If you aren't sure your friend can hang with the big boys as Billy Boy Wonder because he doesn't know much of the game you could instead shrink yourself down instead and work off some of your XP debt.
God bless scaling technology.
Wasn't it also the case that in some events the enemies spawned and regardless of your level you could fight them?
You'd best not be fucking with me, OP.
CoH was my favorite MMO of all time after SWG.
No others ever matched up when SWG and then CoH finally went down, I gave up MMOs for good.
But this... I don't even know what to think of this.
If you are capable of a little roleplay it is the best game for creating a character and feeling like you really are a growing as a hero or villain in a detailed world with lots of well designed content.
Does anyone have the ORIGINAL CoV customization music? The really hardcore ominous shit with the thunder and everything. It's the first theme on >>258571407 but a more intense rendition. Is it available anywhere?
Imagine a game where everything good and just happened
Where you could lig in and enjoy a good game where challenge and fun and awesomeness existed
Now i want you to picture things like hioware and ea titles that are shit and everything thats wrong with them. Now think of CoH as what is right with everything vidya
Thats how good it is m8. Its literally sex
>that fucking track
Pure nostalgia, aged like a fine wine.
Who here played beat Magisterium trial before the end?
>tfw you will never know what Silos was trying to prevent and what Tyrant was shitting his pants about
I just played as this guy and played stuff like this:
That doesn't excuse a completely basic and important function being absent. What's the point of having great music if you can't even listen to it? Do they not realize what a huge fucking difference it makes NOT having music while fighting?
So what's your excuse of not using Icon right now?
>post yfw fighting the main heroes in Freedom Court as a villain
>Have a Invuln/Super Strength Tanker with Super Speed and Flight
>Description read "Some say that he's faster than a speeding bicycle, and that he's able to leap over small sheds, in a single bound. All we know is, he's NOT The Stig, but he is the Stig's super-powered cousin!"
>Cape was a checkered race flag
>Hang out in Pocket D all day, interrupting roleplay sessions by just silently standing there with my arms crossed.
>tfw CoH was the embodiment of what you as a gamer would want in a game
The best part if everything anon, was that this shit was all put in at the launch of CoH itself and just developed better.
Literally the dev's understood what would make sense, i worked there and regularly these guys played 24/7 and woukd regukarly ask themselves shit like "why cant i just chill with friends here? Lets make a club for people to chill
>mfw i watched my coworkers make Pocket D
Its kiterally how the staff thought process worked in the office. They would use common sense and think of things thatd make it fun for everyone and what would work for every single group in the game.
Yiu didnt have RP servers or PvE servers or PvP inly servers.
No,Cryptic devs preferrably Lighthouse believed jn having all of this in ONE server together that if you mixed everything together and not segregate peoples choices then the game woukd succeed
I wish fucking devs and publishers of today did this type of care and thought instead of "HOW CAN WE GET MORE MONEY FROM DA GAMERS"
Fuck this shit
>mmos can NEVER EVER be great again, because of the internet

Aw shit son, SWG! Best fucking MMO ever. Content? Eh, forget about it, who needs content when you've got the best goddamn social atmosphere ever, + JTL + PvP
Have you looked into the SWGEmu? I haven't heard anything about it lately myself, but I think it's totally complete at this point minus JTL
It lets you use the City of Heroes client and it's character creator; you can also transport yourself to other zones and areas. Get shit done like >>258567820
You're a good guy Anon. A real guy. The best guy.
They shut the game down without giving a reason why, refused to let the devs go indie with it or sell it to other publishers who made offers for it, they are as bad as you can get.
It's almost like if a game developer spends its time and resources refining the game and updating the mechanics and adding whole new avenues of gameplay rather than throwing money at a new 'raid' every few months that the game slowly improves over time and becomes better and better.
And the structure of Powersets and Power Pools had the game primed to be able to pint out money in a non exploitative way. Release new fun sets, because players cared a LOT more about fun than actual power of a set (though power didn't hurt) then you can have people buying a set.

>not playing as the most fabulous cat-alien on the Victory server
3/10 try harder /v/
nothing will fill the void
fuck if I could play the game for the whole 5-6 years i was subbed, it was hard when friends left for WoW
I joined in when it went free to play...then bought the game, the Going Rogue expansion, and planned to buy time cards and shit just to get every powerset I could.
I let it rest for awhile after a massive multi-month binge and an interstate move, and then, just as I got the gang back together, NCSoft pulls the fucking plug.
Isnt it odd that the least most cared for experience on CoH was Raids itself?
There was so much to do that yiu never realky cared to do end game raiding unless you had acouple people who needed a certain slot set piece or wanted to make money farming it.
what im saying is Raiding itself in CoH, was never a big deal because the game offered so much more then just MUH RAID ENDGAME shit to do and it was there for you right at the beginning
>tfw getting drunk just chilling in ventrilo with bros running pl all night and then deciding together to go badge hunt because one drunk guy said he wish he had that ine badge
Dude so much god damn choices
I really hope the CoH people get their game back.
So they can stop whining on Champions Online. Jesus fuck. And you CoH people are the worst roleplayers ever from what I've seen. Just because you play a character for 4+ years doesn't mean you can play some DemiGod that can control time or is the embodiment of a whole Universe.
Play a different character if you've run into dead ends on your current one. Fuck. And as another protip? Constant power upgrades aren't actual 'character development'. This isn't fucking DBZ.
And now we have people complaining there isn't enough End Game.
How can one game be so based?
>all toller/dom team
>no need for a tank or defender because all minions get locked down all bosses get put down
CONTROLLER BEST CLASS
Oh my God this was the fucking best. Just flying on top of Atlas to hear this
Because the devs made CoH for fun and had passion for there work and integrity.
They were blizz devs who bent over for more fucking money and would shit on there playerbase if they asked for shit.
Integrity and having a love for ones work is a lost art in vidya anon, ive come to accept the fact that vidya industry is a business and a 9 to 5 job not a passion anymore.
Just accept it anon...or itll kill you like it killed my soul

WHO HAS TIME FOR RAIDING WHEN RIKTI ARE BOMBING ATLAS PARK?
WHO HAS TIME FOR RAIDING WHEN THERE'S A CC GOING ON?
WHO HAS TIME FOR RAIDING WHEN FUCKING ZOMBIES ARE RISING FROM THEIR GRAVES?
The new trials they came out with in the last three issues though were so boss. Getting your healers mind-controlled to heal Mother Mayhem was the bosses thing...
There wasn't nearly enough love for the Shadow Shard
CANT STOP WONT STOP THE BEAT
Going to the Shadow Shard underleveled was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced
Of course they did end up adding an end game though, which was
actually really cool and resulted in your character becoming super fucking OP, which is exactly how it should be.
>Integrity and having a love for ones work is a lost art in vidya anon, ive come to accept the fact that vidya industry is a business and a 9 to 5 job not a passion anymore.
>Just accept it anon...or itll kill you like it killed my soul
I'm already there with you, I've been there for a long time.
>generic target select gameplay
>awful content, every dungeon is the goddamn same
>atrocious graphics and level design, even for its time
>furry ERP, self-insert mary sues and anime shit everywhere
Let's be honest, the game was utter shit. It was just a decent character creator, which was a waste on most people.
Don't even get me started on that fucking "community." The virtue RP thread was worse than anything I saw on gaia, neopets, gametalk, reddit, or anywhere else.
>Low voices vibrate the very air around you, issuing from no mouths that you can see. No matter where you go, you cannot escape the constant chanting of the nonsense phrase "...uuLArUUruUlaARUuaALuU..." You cover your ears but it cannot deaden the sound. You dream of earplugs, you fantasize about cotton swabs suffused with wax, you wish for an ice-pick to puncture your eardrums, anything to make the chanting stop. It is not long before you realize that the chanting is not coming from without, but from within, from you. It is your own mouth that chants this dark refrain, something commands you to speak and unless you leave now you wonder if you will ever stop
>ou look upon this pool of red fluid and your mind says "blood." But despite this another part of your mind says "drink." And you do. It tastes like the scent of green grass, of the metallic tang of an adrenaline rush, burnt rubber, your mother's blueberry pie, and on and on. You realize that it is not flavors the liquid is eliciting, but memories, and with each passing second they come on one after another until you become nauseous with the sensation overload. You spit the liquid from your mouth and vow never to taste it again. But..
>You have found the source of the Crimson Falls. Scientists who have studied it have only theories as to its source and composition, but they are in agreement that it is not entirely of this dimension. Some think that perhaps it is a form of quantum foam; exotic particles and degenerate matter drawn to the Shadow Shard from other dimensions. Swimming through it you find that it offers little resistance, does not make you wet, and while immersed in it you find yourself recalling past events. These recollections become fleeting, as though drawn from you to suffuse the fluid. One memory follows another and as each one does, it becomes increasingly difficult to bring them back. You fear that were you to stay here much longer, the fluid would empty you of all memory
>Uses to have an Ice Hero named Mermaid Man
>One day find a low level player named Barnacle Boy
>Take him under my wing, mentoring the fuck out of him
>We start a guild named "The Mermaid Men"
>Nobody joins (who would want to join a guild that shittily named?)
Ahh good times, I sure hope they bring this game back. I never got the chance to make an Evil Man-Ray character, I wonder what abilities he would work with?
>Endurance drain was terrible
You weren't playing it right, then. I built a Blaster for softcapped defense and end-drain, going elec/elec. I could tank those 30+ groups of centurians by myself in ITF trials. They'd all hit 0 endurance the second I ran in and with the constant DoTs and other drains, they'd only get to attack once every two or three seconds, and would miss about 80% of the time.
I never knew there were so many CoX players on /v/. I hope we get to play it again one day.
There's a standalone character creator out there called Titan Icon. It looks kind of sketchy downloading it, but it works.
Nope Im not giving up. I've recently finished saving up some dosh for college and im going to major in computer science/programming.
I will love video games and I will put that love into every single program I create. VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT GOING TO DIE.
I was gonna say, I'm impressed with it. I prefer DCUO's style at times (Some of the costumes are a bit bulky and clustered but you can pick anything), but it seems theres more freedom with this. was it just paper doll "change the parts" or did you have more control of scale and size (or was that just Champions Online?)
I implied no such thing. CO roleplayers are fucking God awful too.
But CoH roleplayers are more God awful because they think roleplaying for 5+ years means they're a 'veteran' and thus allowed to be fucking horrible roleplayers.
You stand on the brink, a psychological one, overwhelmed by a sense of dislocation and loss that is nearly impossible to shake. The scientists manning Firebase Zulu have codenamed this region "The Marooned Shores," and you can see why this name is appropriate. You feel as though you have washed ashore in a hostile land, cast off from everything you know. You fear, for an instant, that you will never again find the way home. You fight down this irrational fear and move on, lest it consume you.
>You have found a place of peace and calm in a land of madness and danger. High stone walls hem you in on all sides, but they grant a feeling of security and solitude and not one of confinement. You wonder idly why none of the horrors that prowl the landscape around you ever find their way into this place of calm, and you are grateful. Even the unearthly chattering and howls of the Shadow Shard's denizens fail to penetrate here, you almost feel as though you could stay here forever, just lay down and rest, safe from all concern... but you cannot. This sense of ease is an illusion, the safety is a lie. Nowhere is safe here, and you'd best move on before this land robs you of all desire to.
>The briefing listed this area as "Tyrant's Rock," though you are not sure why. Perhaps it is the growing sense of duty and entitlement that fills your chest with unbidden pride. You cast your gaze across this shattered landscape and are struck by a sudden feeling that it is yours, by might or by right. Your heart thuds with a martial drumbeat and you nod at the truth of it—yes, it could all be yours. You will find the one who rules this land and take their throne by force. But you shake off this irrational notion and the realization of where you are slaps you in the face. These thoughts are a trap meant to distract you from your real purpose here.
In 2005/06 that was actually a bit correct. There was very little to do at the endgame, especially because there was only considered to be 1 end game raid and WoW was on its media campaign to convince players that MMO endgame content was exclusively Raiding.
However as time went on they added things to the game. Great things, that didn't involve raiding. Things like player made content, randomly generated quests with selectable difficulty for how powerful your hero was.
By the time it was ending? There was a lot. And being able to scale all content to any level was a huge contributing factor for it.
>You have burdened yourself with so many unnecessary attachments. Your friends will only disappoint you; they are best cast aside. You will ultimately disappoint those you love; better to walk alone and be responsible only to yourself. This identity you've constructed is just an illusion to hide who you really are; not to everyone else, they are less than nothing, but to yourself. Your possessions, your job, your status: it is time for you to deny the hold they have on you and walk free and unfettered.
>It is all your fault. The lives you've ruined along your path to glory. That Hellion who was forced into a life of crime when all other options were spent. That lonely member of the Lost who'd been spat on all his life until he finally found people who accepted him for who he was. That Sky Raider whose daughter depended on him to pay for her dialysis. Did you ever give a thought to the people you've been "defeating" in your quest to become a "true hero?" No, of course not, they're just points to be earned on some metaphorical scorecard.
>You have been manipulated by this place. It has played you like a well-tuned instrument. It has fed you lies and thrown your shortcomings at your face. This place, by its very existence, mocks you and your attempts to understand it. Just as you think you've got a handle on this place it presents you with some new insanity to confound the senses. You feel anger growing like a cancer at the center of your being, a burning rage at every little indignity you've been made to suffer here. Each step you take is fueled by your anger; you will make the Shadow Shard and the things that call this place home pay for what they've done to you.
Deliver us from this hell, Anon.
Actually, I'll concede, I've seen some pretty terrible shit from "survivors", I guess they just came at a point where I already felt that most of the decent RPers I knew had left.
Players who refuse to acknowledge what little important lore there is in CO because it isn't relevant to their old characters send me over the fucking edge.
The selectable difficulty levels that let you face harder challenges for greater rewards. So you could go through the game as a hodgepodge theme character and be fine, or a min/max spreadsheet warrior and do the same content and be equally as challenged.
I'll never forget going through some missions as my build really started getting steam and realizing I should put it at a higher difficulty. Makes a man feel big.
>The Shadow Shard is a prison created to house a powerful entity, an entity tormented by its imprisonment. Its sense of indignity, of injustice, has been concentrated here to such a degree that it has become part of the dimension. You can feel the entity's raw emotion flow through you; you have felt it from the very moment you arrived and it has been chipping away at your sense of self ever since. Remaining here risks making these emotions part of yourself; or worse, you risk being subsumed by the Shadow Shard, losing all identity and will by becoming one with Rularuu.
>You have come to realize that emotion is an elemental force in the Shadow Shard, that the storms that sweep through this place are composed of emotional residue. You have spent enough time here to gain an intrinsic sense of these emotional ebbs and flows. Here you can feel these warping concentrations of Rularuu's fury yet you are able to make them your own, adding your own feelings of anger at the danger posed by Rularuu. You summon images of Rularuu's minions running rampant upon your beloved homeworld and are filled with a rising fury.
>Your destiny on the Shadow Shard is drawing very close. Everything you have experienced so far has been building to this point. You have suffered countless indignities, have had your body and mind abused and violated and the time of reckoning is here. Rularuu is a being who consumes and destroys and now you shall show him that such talents are not his alone.
NCSoft shut it down so that people would play Guild Wars 2.
No I'm not being sarcastic.
>refuse to acknowledge what little important lore there is in CO because it isn't relevant to their old characters send me over the fucking edge.
Fucking -thank you-. That is exactly the kind of shit I saw trudging through the game when CoH shut down. And for many months after, too. I just stopped playing CO when it became too much, man. Between the people trying to play old World of Darkness character or D&D characters I was done when people tried using CoH lore with it.
Most of these people didn't even do anything besides fuck each other so I don't see why they need to be a Superman-tiered hero for that.
>In the distance you can hear the ululating cry of the Devouring Earth and something about it speaks to a primal, ancient, part of you. You can understand how some might be seduced by this call and stray into their embrace to be devoured. There is something almost hypnotic about it; being summoned by a power greater than you, older than you, and somehow welcoming, as though the Devouring Earth offer a unity unattainable anywhere else on this world.
>Strange whispers echo through this sheltered vale, a place where the Devouring Earth rest and meditate, receiving strange missives from their lord and master: Hamidon. If you listen hard enough you can catch brief glimmers of understanding. Hamidon speaks to his children and urges them to be patient, that the time to take back what is rightfully theirs will soon be here. How does one reckon time when they are immortal? What is "soon" to something with a life-span measured in millennia?
>It is difficult to remain unaffected by the display of Hamidon's might. How could anyone not feel a sense of awe at the majesty present in the towering spires of rock, the primeval forest you can practically watch growing before your very eyes? How anyone could not feel insignificant before it is a mystery. But then you realize that this is merely another seduction perpetrated by Hamidon, to weaken your resolve and steal from you the urge to resist the Devouring Earth and the danger they represent.
That's an asshole move. Still seems like there's a lot of people who would play it if it were up today.
Personally the thing that killed CO for me was
not being able to throw objects at other objects. I could do in beta but for some inexplicable reason they took it out, or it bugged and they never fixed it. I'm not joking.
>Made my hero a slender black robot with an 8 on his chest
>"The Mighty 8-Ball"
>Speed runner focusing on guns
>Loads of people kept asking me questions, wanting the 8-ball answer
Good times were had. I miss them.
>City of Heroes is remembered in higher regard than Star Wars Galaxies
>maybe I will be able to see all my Virtue bros again
This better not be a joke.
>This once was a place of amusement and adventure, a place for people to get up close and personal with real monsters. What fools. The hubris on display here is staggering and you have to suppress the urge to snicker at the fate that befell them. You deal with monsters all the time, literally and figuratively, and the last thing you'd do is treat them like some kind of side-show attraction for the kiddies. You can't help but put yourself in the monsters' place; you'd have smashed and devoured these puny little humans too.
>You'd heard a recording of the last transmission sent from this location: a frantic helicopter pilot trying to get his whirlybird off the platform before the monsters closed in. You could hear the terror in his voice and it made you smile. You know what that terror is like. You've felt it and been the source of it for others. That last fifteen seconds as the pilot's scream mixes with the heli's collision alarm are audio gold.
>A yawning void opens before you, a testament to Hamidon's power, but you are unmoved. You have seen true darkness first hand and it has not kept you from pressing onward. You carry enough darkness within you and it's going to take a lot more than a big hole in the ground to impress you. You've gazed into the abyss, and it's gazed into you too; you're both well acquainted with each other and have few secrets left to share.
>Lord Nemesis typing at his clockwork PC.jpg
So we can all agree that Mastermind was the best class right?
>Play as a guy who summons fucking skeletons
>or play as a guy who makes robots
>OR play as a guy who has a crew of the hardest niggas this side of Compton
>OR play as a guy who is bros with FUCKING NINJAS
Mastermind was best
For me it was the sudden pre release switch between "Just do whatever character you want" and "You can play just fine if you're using the busted way of playing"
It basically took it from a successor for CoH to it's own thing.
SWG pre-sony was amazing, we can have 2 good things.
>World of Darkness character or D&D characters
>Most of these people didn't even do anything besides fuck each other so I don't see why they need to be a Superman-tiered hero for that.
If there's no point in fighting each other then it becomes easier to focus on showing off your hideouts.
What really takes the cake is when people not only using CO to RP their other shitty unrelated lore but are actively elitest towards anyone who doesn't do the same. CoH brought with them an entire SG of faggots like that ontop of a DnD succubus Harem that had already been going strong alongside multiple other DnD and WoD harems that died off just in time for a new wave of Futa and Trap RPers to pop up.
It's shame I have to shift through so many shitty characters to find the few nice players with cool characters.
>tfw Cryptic North will never let you pick up other characters like in DCUO.
Atleast you can use commands to fire off infinite chairs and trucks like a machinegun.
>mfw I never got a chance to make a MM because was an edgy ninja faggot back then.
>played City of Heroes
>played Guild Wars
>played Tabula Rasa
>played Auto Assault
I am feeling like an empty shell right now, thanks NCSoft.
Yeah, they nerfed the shit out of everything. I LIKED being able to kill 10 mobs, it made you feel like a hero, and the content was almost designed around it anyway. And it made PvP more interesting. But no, they nerfed you because you're not allowed to feel powerful, and forced you into rigid cohesive builds because fuck customization.
If we're lucky they're just staying in the shadows developing some tech until a definitive up or down comes on the CoH buy. Then if it does go through they'll just move everything over to developing more content for that, and if it doesn't then they'll continue the new one.
In fact this might be the sole reason that NCsoft is even listening to fans about selling the game, not wanting the new team to make essentially the same game that they can't touch and steal any hope of further profit from the property.
