Serious answer: Japan is somehow both the most behind third world with decent resources and the future at the same time.

They still have fax machines and think PCs are purely for programming and accounting in some areas.

They go for aesthetic appeal but have nor can get the budget that western AAA games have outside a rare few.

Half the reason illusion games were so shit in optimization is because the average player on steam would be using a 780 for gaming, and a titan black for rendering and multitasking in comparison.

Even if they allowed eroge on steam, Rance will never be released in the west. Alicesoft has said it'll never happen, and their website doesn't even allow access to non-japanese IPs (yes you can proxy around it, but that's not the point).

There isn't a PC gaming scene in Japan like there is in the rest of the world.

In Japan, people only go home to sleep and spend most of their time either at work or commuting to & from work. This left PC gaming largely to those who like Hentai games, and that's where the money went.

Now PC gaming in Japan has an awful stigma surrounding it, that you must be into ero-games like Rapelay or whatever. So people don't even want to admit that they have gaming PCs in their houses. Only NEETs who never leave their rooms are PC gamers.

So in a situation like that, why would a Japanese developer dedicate any time to creating a PC game? Only a tiny indie scene is starting to develop, and even they cater to Vita and 3DS anyway.

People say start with Sengoku, but honestly that's kind of a self-justification for the fact that for the longest time it was the only one translated. It is the 7th game in the story after all.

Don't PLAY the first game. Read the digest version of 1's remake, since 01 won't be translated any time soon.
Play 02
Play 3, 4, 4.1, 4.2, where were all translated by Maria over at /haniho/ in vg.
5D will take some time since it's taking a while, but unlike the last time they tried translating it, the guy translating and editing now is actually making progress (despite being a heavy alcoholic).
6 won't be translated until 5D is done.
Sengoku (7) is already good to go.
Don't expect Quest (8) to be translated for several years. The game is massive in size.
9 might get translated one day. It's actually not a particularly long game in comparison to Quest.
Kichikuou, while non-canon, has recently finished translating and editing and is currently in bugtesting.
