I honestly think the idea of fem link works out really good because it makes the origin a bit more interesting. Kind of like how in The Once and Future King, how Arthur forgets a sword to get for his brother so he just finds a sword in the ground, it would be like the Kokiri village is getting all fucked up and Fem-Link is the only one whose cunning and wit is enough to drive off the evil, when the prophecy says a hero is to come at a similar time.
