That might be a retconn explanation in the current show canon, but originally it was because Ash not wanting Pikachu to be memory wiped.

It was a different time, early pokemon was weird because they had yet to conceptualized how the "world would work". Remember that for the first season it was implied that Pokemon were new to the world and just started turning up (Ash never seeing one in his, advertisements for becoming a pokemon trainer as if something new, ect) and that background animals were way more common. They also had North America and South America as being continents where as now I'm pretty sure they've been retconned as being Unova.

I have a gunwunner cousin who literally only sticks to the first game because he doesn't want to "play catch up".

The reason they exist is because Pokemon started fading in it's immense popularity by the second gen, at least in america. The copious amounts of advertising and events started to die down and kids stopped caring about it.

I didn't even know about the Gold and Silver until about a year after it's release, no one gave a shit.

Fortunately I got back into 3rd gen and re-discovered a newfound love for the series, but the initial bulk of the first generation did not. The people who cut themselves off by the second gen eventually grew up and started getting nostalgic for the first gen, but felt uncomfortable about the pokemon gens that came out while they stopped caring about the series. So they justified that all the new games were shit as to make an excuse to not play them.

The Sad evolution, Shellder bites Slowpokés tail, it still becomes sentient bu hostile, so slowly has been eating slowpoke as we can see in it's Mega form that finally reaches it's goal, leaving slowpoke an empty vessel like Parasect.

The happy evolution, Slowpoke's psychic powers grows stronger and kills the Shellder on it's head which becomes nothing but a garment on Slowpoke's head
Of course that would have been cool if it wasn't for the small detail that is a King's rock that makes it a Slowking.

I've just finished catching up with the anime and while Hawlucha was already one of my favorite Gen 6 pokémon and a total bro on my first playthrough of Y, that Hawlucha episode easily makes him climb up to my number 1 spot, outclassing Feraligatr who had been there since the early days of gen 2. Personally, I always loved the idea of pokemon, but none of the games ever evolved to the potential the concept had. So I fell out of love with the series. I keep looking back to see if things change. A little token mechanic here and there is new, but really the series hasn't striven to improve itself since gen 1 in a serious manner.

First games were fine as a kid because I had so little experience, but I wouldn't call them classics. Even back then I would become frustrated by the game's self imposed limitations.

As far as grades based on designs alone, I wouldn't say they've improved overall. Designs that aren't an eyesore were rare even in Gen 1, but now the series constantly ruins a sound basis for a design with too many details. Sometimes simplicity is better. Particularly in art where over designing something turns a looker in to an eyesore. Which is more depressing than the designs just being bad because they prove they CAN do it, but they simply decide to go too far with a good idea.

It's a good design but I don't think it's thought out that well.

Like the obvious question, the Slowpoke tail is supposed to be a delicacy and what attracted the Shellder in the first place...so why is there now a hole in the top of the Shellder that is now trying to eat the rest of the body and the tail is not digested or damaged in any way.

And balancing on the tail just doesn't really seem to obey the laws of physics hue. Guess we'll have to see the animation when footage gets shown.

There's no defending the Snivy fight.
Even if we accept Zekrom stealing his power, the fact reminds that Zekrom is irrelevant for the rest of the series, so it's a shitty asspull.
Even if we accept that Snivy resists electric attacks, Ash still had Quick Attack which should have been faster even if Pikachu's electric moves were weakened. Then there's the fact that it's a Snivy that was just picked up from the professor, and a trainer that just started out, going up against Ash who just got through with defeating legendaries.
Black and White is asspull after asspull, without any battles really worth watching.

Actually I think that's because the earthquake in Japan fucked shit up internally for the anime so they had to scrap a lot of their plans. In the original green and red sprites, the Gengar line makes more sense. Gastly has a "partical" effect where he doesn't have a definite orb shape, when he turns into haunter the particals decrease and he gets a bit more solid. Finally, when he's Gengar the particles are no longer present and he's completely solid. It basically represents a shapeless ghost turning into a solid shadow.

Unfortunately this transition wasn't captured in the official art, mainly because haunter had that "in-between" detail removed.
