First, remove Mother. It's less notable than Kid Icarus is.
Second, you'd prove your point better by showing Mario/Zelda/Pokemon representation on there too.
Third, we haven't seen all of the content in the game yet. It's possible that Sakurai is just showing the content that's easiest for him to talk about. I'm not going to deny that it's a lot of KI-related content though.
Fourth, while DK is a big series, I COULD see Sakurai cutting back on showing things for it due to how its related to Mario. Yoshi and Wario are more or less in the same boat so it's possible. Not that I'd agree with that reasoning, but it's there. Metroid isn't that big in Japan, or in general really seeing as DKCR outsold the entire Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Am I the only one who never really saw Metroid underrepresented in Smash?

Particularly in Brawl, where it had:

Metroid is certainly praised a lot but it's not one of those games I'd say is super popular in the west. I'd say that's more like 3D Zelda games, which aren't as big in Japan from what I've seen but are huge in the west. Japs seem to care more about 2D Zeldas or Hyrule Warriors (which isn't even a real Zelda game anyways).

Not saying Metroid isn't popular, but the average sales I've seen for individual Metroid titles have matched up with what I saw for Fire Emblem Awakening and Kid Icarus Uprising.

I'd like K. Rool to be in, but I think he's currently an odd thing to add right now. They're surprising choices, but I wouldn't say that they're that outlandish. Rosie brings a unique fighting style to the game and essentially represents two of the most critically acclaimed and noteworthy games in Nintendo's repertoire. Kind of a similar thing with WFT, who represents the age when Nintendo was finally back on top of the console market after years of middling to poor hardware.

As for Lucina, she was more of a last minute clone ala Doc and Roy. I do wish they did more with her other than "she's marth without the sweetspot ahuh" but it's not like she took that long to make, nor they did she take anyone's spot.

The problem with Kid Icarus is that it's a game that Sakurai worked on, and as a result it's getting all of this love and exposure, Palutena getting TWELVE unique moves while other characters get a modded version of their default moves. Rosalina and Lucina aren't really even that surprising when you think about it. I actually considered both to be possibilities prior to their announcements. Both are hugely popular in their franchises (see Nintendo citing Rosalina's fanbase in an interview and Lucina topping in official polls) and both are important enough in their games (story NPC for Galaxy 1, super guide for Galaxy 2, playable character for 3D World, and Lucina is only behind Robin and Chrom in importance to Awakening).

The only surprise with both getting in is that they actually bothered to give Mario another character and that Nintendo is bothering to use Rosalina more in general (NOT forcing her like retards like to think, most of the games she gets into now are games that plenty of other Mario characters get into and unlike most other Mario characters, she's actually made by people who make Mario platformers) and that they used Lucina the way they did, which was more or less unprecedented.

Mega Man had MM9 and 10 between Brawl's release and Smash 4. You could stretch it and add Volnutt appearing in TvC and Star Force 2 and 3 if you wanted to I guess since Geo and Volnutt are in the game as well.

Her having customizable and changeable specials isn't far off from how in Uprising, you mix and match and customize the different powers you have. Pit already had Uprising weapons build into his moveset, so I always thought (before she was even announced) it would make sense to give Palutena Uprising powers.

Most of the newcomers this game aren't really just representing their abilities as a character, they're representing game mechanics from the games they came from. This would explain stuff like why Mega Man moves and plays like how he does in the NES games, why Little Mac has the KO meter taken from the arcade games, why Rosalina's moveset consists of gameplay mechanics from Mario Galaxy (Luma buddy/co-op, launch star, the cursor), etc.

Yoshi is also the representative for the YOSHI series, the same way that Pokemon are reps for the POKEMON series. Them being species means nothing since that's what their franchises consist of and utilize as the main characters. Toad isn't like that at all. Toad has seniority over Rosalina, but in almost every other category (aka the ones that matter like roles, moveset potential, and one actually being a character in the series while the other is a species), Rosalina either matches Toad or beats him out completely. Toadsworth is hilariously irrelevant so to try and say you'd want him is extremely curious to me. You'd have done better with Captain Toad, who still isn't that viable for his own reasons.

I actually do think that Palutena getting 12 special moves is really odd and kind of unfair since her regular moveset already details Uprising mechanics perfectly.
