>for every dollar I spend on a game, I should get at least 1 hour of fun interesting gameplay.

RPGs were my go to for this money to fun ratio. now with less free time it has moved to roguelikes.

I love knowing I don't contribute meaningfully to gaming, its the only reason I'm okay with not being catered to.
>>
>>257576292

I think the last game I paid full price for was Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time. It was a good game but looking back jeez the 80 dollarydoo's I paid for it are a lot.

Even those EB games sales where shit was $20 or so is expensive now that I compare it with Steam.

Don't buy any single player game for more than $20, if it isn't worth playing in 5 years it was never worth playing.

There are enough free games and games that you can emulate where buying more than 1-2 games a year is a waste of money, and buying consoles is a massive waste of money.

Never pay any attention to prerelease media or reviews of any kind, all of them are marketing lies.

That Nintendo is great.

I'm embarrassed at how many years I spent being the stereotypical "nintendo is for babies" faggot. When I see people talking about the Wii U not being a "real console" I get secondhand embarrassment and just hope they're dumb edgy teens like I was.

And now Nintendo are stooping to preorder bonuses, just because of faggot hardkore REAL GAMERS. I hate them, and I hate myself. This is the nightmare we made for ourselves.

Nothing. I knew I wanted one eventually, and so I took the opportunity when I had the chance to get a PS4 for $300, but holy shit is there nothing to do on it. Every single one of the PS+ games besides Strider was garbage, and despite me trying a bunch of AAA games on it, the only ones I enjoyed enough to keep were Metal Gear which I played for about 20 hours and inFamous, in which I got the platinum trophy, which requires two playthroughs and all collectibles, within 15 hours.

And the two games I would have gotten and loved to play with friends this holiday were Battlefield Hardline and Evolve, both of which got pushed to next year, so it will be collecting dust for another six months.

I know games will come out for it and I likely wouldn't have gotten a much better deal on it, so I didn't waste my money, but in the meantime the thing sucks balls.

>>257576292

My naive brain used to believe small developers getting bought by huge publishers was a good thing because now they'll have a bottomless budget and therefore their games will be that much more awesome. Now I know there are so many other implications to selling out.
>>
Are there really no games that you guys like enough to pay full price for at launch? I don't care if they're $100, there is no way I'm missing the opportunity to play a Metal Gear or Smash Bros. or Metroid game as soon as I possibly can.

I'm not even in australia, nigger. At least PC vidya is reasonably priced at around $30.
>>
>>257581245
but 40 is also expensive? and 35? and 22?

20 is just an unrealistically low number to get any game the year it came out. especially nintendo games. if the game drops that low within months, it must have been shit and you shouldn't want to play it.

I can see "don't pay full price" as a good rule, because there are always sales going on and shit. but there's no reason to be a skinflint and wait until they drop past your arbitrary threshold.

Yeah, people say "never buy a game at $60 because you might not but 300 hours into it", but if you get 20 or even 10 hours out of it right at launch and you feel satisfied and done with it, you can just sell it to Gamestop for usually $40 depending on how big the game is.

$20 is not bad at all for getting to playthrough a game in a month.

>>
>Never pay more than 20 dollars on a game
Are Nintendo games or limited physical editions of games an exception?
Nintendo games seem to always keep their price high
Rare games with low amount of copies turn really expensive too
>>
>>257582004
It really depends on what you consider to be the "right price" for something. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a threshold for price, if a person is willing to wait until something drops into a reasonable price range, then more power to them. Video games are not food, they are not a necessity, and you are definitely capable of waiting to play one as long as you have minimal self-control. It's wise to think about how much you're spending for something that you may only get 5 hours of entertainment out of or that you may not even end up liking.
>>
>>257583692
when was the last time you payed for a bad game?

I don't pay for anything unless I know I'm going to at least "like" it. and I'm saying that because I think about it like that, I don't spend my money unless I'm sure I really WANT it, I don't end up playing anything I don't like.

I can't remember the last time I had buyer's remorse, because I force myself to be careful.

But when I was a high school and would just pirate the fuck out of everything, I played a ton of shit and most of it was just that - shit. I'm like an opposite of tired gamer, now that I've reduced my intake to things that are actually relevant to my interests, I enjoy every game I play.
>>

>>
>>257583356
Holy shit, how long are those kid's knees?
>>
>>257584201
Yeah that's the problem with setting price limits on certain games. You wait for a price drop, and you end up waiting so long that all the copies are gone and they're being sold for an even higher price. Look at Xenoblade Chronicles, or Metroid Prime Trilogy, or the Metal Gear Solid Legacy.
>>

What the fuck? What games are you even playing if you won't spend more than 20 dollars on a game?
60 dollars is not a lot of money. Someone working a minimum wage job could get more than 60 dollars in a day of work.

Right, I forget you all sit around on your computers doing absolutely nothing but shitpost. Why even spend 20 dollars on a game? You're not gonna play it anyway.

>when was the last time you payed for a bad game?
When I was buying games regularly. I still buy games occasionally, but only when I am 100% certain that I like those game (usually because I've already played them beforehand) I pirate games that I'm not sure if I will like or not, because I'm careful with how I spend my money and who I support.

>I don't pay for anything unless I know I'm going to at least "like" it
How do you know that you are going to like it if you haven't actually played it? The only way to know for sure before you buy it is either through a demo or pirating. Gameplay videos and reviews/previews are unrelaibale and no substitue for hands on experience. The only way you'll never end up playing anything you don't like is if you play an extremely conservative number of games. Because almost everyone who has more than a casual interest in games endeds up with at least one game they didn't like.

Most people aren't that careful with what they play, so they end up playing a bunch of shit that they in turn rationalize as good games by post-purchase rationalization. There is no cognitive bias when pirating games though, a game is no worse because I pirate instead of buying it.

>I bought an Xbone

Generally regret it, could have spent the money on car parts which I would have gotten way more enjoyment out of.

The Xbone isn't that bad, I really wanted to play Forza 5, but that was a huge disappointment, though they're slowly making up for it with free shit. BF4 was okay, Trials Fusion was good enough, Watchdogs was fucking awful and that's all I've really played on it thus far.

I'm still waiting on The Division, which I'm holding out hope for, and I'll probably be getting Project Cars too.

All in all the consoles biggest downfall for me is that it tries to do EVERYTHING via the internet, rather than using it's own operating system and hardware.

And when I say everything, I mean everything. You wanna look at your friends list? Let's stream the menu, graphics and all. Wanna look at your achievements? Let's stream all of that too!

It does absolutely nothing client side, if you put a disk in, you have to install it. So will the console use the data on the disk and copy it over? Will it fuck, it'll try and download every single bit of it. When you're somebody like me with pic related internet, it gets pretty fucking annoying quickly when you want to install a game, and rather than doing it via the disk in about 10 minutes, it thinks trying to download it over the course of two days is the more logical option.

All in all, extremely disappointed. Things may improve but it's a fucking terrible start.
>>
>>257581798
That's because you're a manchild with no self-control.

The game is going to be exactly the same in a year when it's half off as it is right now. Do you really have so little going on in your life that you can't do something equally entertaining until then?
>>
>>257576292
Any multiplayer-centric game should be bought upon release since it is useless once public focus is shifted elsewhere. That said, most of them are shit and should be skipped. Single player games are the only games that can be enjoyed even years down the road.

Halo 2 on XBL taught me this. Those days were some of the most fun of my life, but short-lived. I play mostly RPGs now.

There is literally nothing wrong with microtransactions.

You should reward people who pay to play, and anyone who disagrees is either a neckbeard who lives in his mom's basement with no income, or a 13 year old who has no income. AT LEAST they re-balance the class and nerf it (I don't play LoL I'm just going by the argument put forth int he article), it's way worse if a game just leaves OP people in the game

People have to realize that games doesn't run on magic and dreams, but on tangible servers that cost money and run up the electricity bill

shit man, I could at least understand if this was 1995 or earlier, but twenty greenpapers don't really get you as far as it used to. I could understand 30 or maybe 40 if the game was really good, but 20 dollars is like taking a shit all over the dev's faces.

and yes I get that its a "epic Monkey Island reference", but if you actually let that influence you, you're a man child with no sense of the value of money.

You raise a valid point actually, I'm glad they're waiting to actually release a finished product rather than just pushing out like R* did with GTA 5, or Turn 10 with Forza 5. I'm too much of a role player and I care too much about the objective when I play battlefield and I tend to get kind of butthurt and grumpy when my team loses. I've also been recently getting unreasonably angry when I play against friends on Super Smash Brothers project M.

in project ends case, I can play fine until my friends do something that I deem to be cheap or unfair, like avoiding me until they can get the Smash Ball or just item whoring in general or using try hard tournament level moves on a game that was supposed to be casual and fun. Stuff like this gets me stupidly frustrated, & I know I have a problem with this, what can I do to lighten up my own mood?

There's no point in telling someone your console is better/ their console is shit because even if they bought the console you have, they would never play with you because of how much of a douche you were to them.

>engaging in public discourse
>2014

Why would you place yourself in this shit show? You're either retarded enough to play a part in this rat race where absolutely nothing productive is accomplished, or you're smart enough to realize 99% of people you're arguing against have no idea what they are talking about. There is no reason to engage in public discourse whatsoever over the internet, and even in real life. Explaining things to people solves nothing, all that really matters is action. Stop feeding into peoples stupidity, if someone says something stupid ok ignore them they're retarded. If they automatically assume they are right because of no response then congrats, you have no responsibility to babysit retards especially over the internet where half are likely not even genuine.

you're forgetting about the memes, Anon, the dominant/correct idea is more likely to spread and stick than incorrect ideas

think of that retard whose nonsensical statement you just disproved, maybe that guy, or somebody else that previously agreed with him will suddenly feel convinced of your view.
That person will then later on defend their (=your) idea when it's challenged by some other retard, and perhaps convince more people, who in turn may also continue this process and create an ever growing tree of memetic transmissions

I bought San Andreas 3 times, almost 4.

First on PC at release, then when I got a new computer my brother lost one of the install discs.

Copy for PS2, which got scratched to shit also from brother

3rd also for PS2, which either got scratched or lost, by my brother

I'm tempted to buy it on Steam at the next sale
>>
>>257623292
I pay €200 on one night out at the weekend in Ireland. We make decent money in this country. €60 is not a lot of money if you have a job.

The mistake you are making is buying €60 games though. AAA is always shit.

Compared to third world countries yeah maybe but in reality the entire employment system is borderline abuse I had to do 3 internships before getting a job that pays 250 a week. If you're making decent money, fair play and congrats but most of the country, especially Dublin isn't.
I also learned my lesson about paying that much for games. Last straw was Skyrim, game wasn't even finished and they had the audacity to charge 60 for it.

This only ever happens with big games and even then very rarely in this day and age. You are falling for the exact shit he's talking about.

Even then go to a department store, they never sell out of anything because no one thinks to go there. Bookstore in my town always sold out of the new Harry Potter and there would always be a stack of them in K Mart that me and my dad were smart enough to go to.

I bought a PS4 and I mainly use it as a $400 Battlefield 4 machine. I feel pretty bad for buying this early but I had the extra money so I decided why not. I bought all my PS4 games at a discount. $40 for Battlefield 4, $40 for Killzone, $20 for Ghosts and $40 for Black Flag. I played maybe 30 hours top for everything but Battlefield, which I have about 400 hours into. Don't Starve is pretty comfy so I spend a lot of time on that as well. Overall, I'd say not worth it yet. I'd wait for a decent bundle, more games, and when they finally decide to support your phone's, music and etc. I thought this was next-gen Sony. Fuck me.
