Lets have a good sprites thread, .webm and .gif are welcome
I wonder, are many of these sprites hand-drawn and scanned in for coloring/digitization, or do many of the artists have tablets or really, really good mouse handling?
Asking because I'm trying to get not shit at this stuff.
Most sprites are either drawn by hand on paper and then clean up on the computer with photoshop, or they're 3D renders that are traced after they're positioned into each pose, then cleaned up in photoshop.
That's what I suspected (minus the Photoshop part), going pure pixel-art seems really, really difficult for anything past a fairly small resolution.
Now, how was PC-98 shit like pic related done? I've been told Deluxe Paint (I have Grafx2, which is a clone), but what kind of wizard could pull that off?
I'd say though Arc did a terrific job to literally make them literally look like sprites. If they kept everything at the side, and NOT rotated in the reveal trailer, everyone would've though "OH THEY'RE KEEPING SPRITES!"
Dumping sprites for the game I'm developing with 4 other guys
They're not made by me, they're made by one of our other guys on the team. I think they're pretty good, what about you?
That's me, alright.
A lot of people thought the face on Donkey Kong is a picture of me. It's actually not (it's some bitch named Patricia Hernandez).
I'm glad I have a fan!
Poses look stiff and lazy. Colouring isnt very interesting either.
Lol, hey man good luck in your game please make posts here every now and then on the progress.
Well, we're extremely early in developement. The game's barely anything but an idea and a physics engine at this point. Quality spritework isn't that important a priority at this point.
This sprite actually was made by me. I'm very proud of it.
The pose is very static. Assuming that is an enemy and it is in a battle situation, it's pose would definitively not be "standing straight while stretching my arm foward and holding this axe perpendiculary".
Outside of that, the palettes are fine (besides the third one, which could use a bit of darknening), and the shading, while fine in some areas such as the wings, seens randomly selective (no shading in the head or in most of the axe, for example).
I always love seeing these threads, because I can usually find something I haven't seen before.
Oh, you're that autist. Your game will be shit and you need a lot of work. Trust me my dad works at nintendo.
u avin a giggle m8
Anyone have high quality sprites of lenneth from valkyrie profile?
The animation in that game was really smooth, at least in the platforming segments in between fights.
>not playing a traditional snare
>not playing traditional grip
>not having a strap
>not supporting it with right leg
>Does he switch hands when he changes direction?
Don't be silly, anon. The executioner is right-handed.
Oh hey, I remember that blob.
Welp, if we are posting our own sprites, I might as well throw this piece of shit back up.
It's not shit, anon. It's really good. Part of me tells me you know that and are just fishing for compliments.
It's the same artist under different industry standards. It's much faster to work this way, and it's all about time, getting shit done as quickly as possible.
Blazblue does this, so does Dragon's Crown and the likes of those ultra HD sprites. It makes for more accurate animation and still looks pretty.
Many artists actually feel this was a godsend because they can now create absolutely stunning AND fluid animation without blowing up all their nerves. It's not cheating, it's using tools. 3D models are a tool.
I seem to recall reading they were working on it, but I dont know whether they just gave up on that or what.
I dont think its tight, just see-through. You can trace her mound of venus all the way down.
I'm speaking relatively.
For an amateur who was fucking around, sure, I guess it ain't bad, but in the grand scene of things, my spriting and animating ability leaves a lot to be desired.
At least, that is the way I see it.
See, that's how YOU see it.
There are two kinds of artists: those who are overly critical of themselves and never see themselves as good enough (like you) and then there are people who aren't critical enough and just shrug and say "ehh, that's okay" (like me).
Obviously, people like you make much better artists.
Thanks for that. I didn't recognize the characters and so couldn't tell.
It is some sort of Super Robot Wars game, from what I recall. I don't recall the name, though.
and now I need to fap, great. what fucking game is this?
also this? I imagine this is just some artwork and isn't from an actual game.
Found it. It's a character from Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier.
>also this? I imagine this is just some artwork and isn't from an actual game.
It's a character from Red Earth, a Capcom fighting game.
>What about this?
Deviantart image, just check out the filename.
LAB: Still Alive
Parasite in City
Marionette of the Labyrinth
Girl vs Girl
There are some others as well which are less interesting to play, like Taimashi Rio 3 or ??????2.
>Why bother posting sprites if its just from some neckbeards deviantart?
Probably the same reason that >>257121153 >>257123075 >>257123325 gets posted.
I'm gay, but women in general are just funner to animate than men.
That said, we don't need all the damn porn. This is the first Sprite/Pixel Art thread we've had in weeks, and the porn just puts it at risk of deletion.
I really hope there is a lot more than just spitroasting for double-teams the final game.
It's from the same guy who did Risk of Rain.
>already a board for that
yeah, and theres a board for retro video games, which this is likely better suited for. Nothing wrong with overlap, especially when /gif/ is just 3DPD.
oh snap, thats why it looks so familiar and good. awesome. Didn't know that they were making a game like this. Aren't they also making a game similar to risk of rain but instead of being space/sci fi themed its going to be paranormal themed in a 1920's noir setting?
back to posting worksafe content so you don't cry out of your puss I guess
shame that quality like this is wasted on the background for the most boring of genres. Are there any adventure/platformer/metroidvanias with anything like this level of animation? Aside from maybe la mulana if you're being generous?
Do you have a problem with aggressive breasts, Anon?
just imagine, there was an executive somewhere that said "make sure we continue to make her breasts jiggle in each game we make"
how does one ascend to such a lofty career.
i have no idea what game the backgrounds are from, I just know only fighting games got this treatment.
fuck modern "retro" designs like fez and shit like that, why doesn't somebody make a modern game using artwork and animations like this? I imagine the reason why these are relegated to only fighting game backgrounds is because those games barely took anything to run, its just a static stage with 2 variable fighters on screen. Why doesn't somebody use the technology we have now to create games using this artsyle in ways that they couldn't before due to technical limitations.
I remember seeing an artbook for one of those old H-games and they pretty much took a normal cel-painting and ran it through filters.
I'm running out of stuff to post btw, somebody else needs to pick up the slack in a few posts
Should have made Ancient Japanese Vidya thread, I don't like posting PC-98 artwork in a sprite threads.
Aquaria, rayman, Braid. Those are what you'll get, ie non-grid but still with element reuse. Fighting game backgrounds can afford to be the way they are because they only need to cover small areas.
this isnt even my thread, I saw it, said "neat" and started contributing like a good, little /v/irgin should.
Fuck whoever made it though, feel free to post any old style graphics, doesn't bother me. cool artwork is cool artwork.
I still have a giant folder of stuff, so I'm not worried.
It's too pricy. Good pixel art generally takes more work than good art by itself, because you need to start with the artwork and then translate it into animated pixels. It's easier just to animate a drawing in Flash or to go with a more basic pixel artstyle for the game.
The reason that SNK and Capcom could get away with it was that they were re-using their artwork in multiple games, so that it eventually paid for itself.
shovelknight is actually accurate to NES graphics, not indieretrodogshit. Of course its nothing like the stuff I'm posting, but it doesn't look like the stuff we're complaining about. I definitely recommend it, though it is a bit short.
I love this art direction..forgot what it was called when you have this dot-matrix shadows. Because if I recall correctly, that's the limitation of the style. But to me, it adds to it.
I actually have aquaria on my wishlist. Fuck rayman and braid though. Those aren't what I'm talking about at all. Especially rayman, fuck the everloving shit out of that artstyle. I want pixels, not ultra smooth rounded corners on everything so it looks like a saturday morning cartoon.
Man, I remember the reveal trailer was so mind blowing. I was all like "oh, hey, that looks kinda weird for sprites. It looks very cartoony I wonder how it looks so flui-OH MY GOD"
That's a cute K.K.
Forgive the flashes on this one. I don't know what he was thinking.
Thanks, Anon. I always want to have the source on these but can't be bothered to spend hours using Google image search on them all.
Then play Adventures of Lomax, by Psygnosis. Looks beautiful in motion.
I know literally nothing about animation/design/art at all, but is there really no way to make creating art like that easier in this day and age? I would imagine that there must have been SOME advancement in some way.
I have but one gay sprite for you two
well, I imagine it will be getting some thought put into it sometime soon, since every indie and their mother are going for retro graphics to be cool. Hopefully in another few years they will move on to better stuff like that and then maybe in another 5 years or so it will go to low poly 3D. Low poly stuff can look great too.
"Art like that" was created, because they could only use 16 colors; that's also why they used darker pixels to add shading. Now you can use 64 million colors, so dithering isn't needed, you just use the color you need.
BEATS AND BEATS AND BEATS
BEATS AND BEATS AND BEATS
BEATS AND BEATS AND BEATS
BEATS IN MY HEAD
seems like what is being made today is completely different. Maybe its using the same techniques but the artstyle is completely different, which is defeating the purpose for people like me. A good example is la mulana, both the original and the updated one.
He really is talented.
I find it a crying shame that he wastes most of his talent on big-breasted nude girls, the most generic thing ever to be sprited.
It would have had shock value back in the early vidya days, but now it's fucking boring. Draw more awesome shit, like dogs and robots.
It's probably a generic jrpg with turn based combat and h-scenes.
>stole your sprites
I don't get it, you mean like you, personally, created some sprites and were showing them off and somebody saved them and reposted them in another thread claiming they were theres?
because thats the only way that you can say they "stole" them.
Was it me?
If so, sprite guy, I gave you credit for them.
oh, I've seen that gif before. It looks like scott pilgrims artstyle, I just assumed it was that guy. is it? Did some basic google searching and I'm not finding a source to that one. Is there more like that?
Legit the name of the game is "Bread"
Last I saw it was under development, with the dev's tumblr posting gifs like that. Unfortunately I lost the bookmark to the tumblr, and good fucking luck finding info on i with he generic name.
Where are you finding these, anyways?
Is there a website you are grabbing these from?
It's Paul Robertson. He does a lot of random stuff and he did all the sprites for Mercenary Kings too
PROJECT X ZONE
This one thing i extremely loved and enjoyed from this game was the sprites. As well as the character, but goddamn it those sprites were deliciously good. Namco x Capcom also has good stuff too.
Some quick Googling give this:
fmtownsmarty on imgur, sadpanda, mobygames, some were found on atei.st
PC-98 had so many cyberpunk games.
His name, MO2
I'm making a porn game with him
Good guy, only knows Japanese thought.
Best taunt to ever be in fighting game
Coming. A save bug issue forced me to sit down and figure out a work around for a while. I THINK it's more stable now, waiting to hear back from a few others on that + spell checking before I push it out.
The bug thought was wonky, as it would trigger only if you got a game over, loaded a save, and then on your second fight would crash the game.
Least you aren't dead, hope you get that save bug fixed.
run it and it should make a folder with pics ect.
I doubt I'm going to die anytime soon, just have very long periods of "I'm not the best programmer who just happens to get good connections" in where I run into a wall and very little gets done till I chip it down.
Also friends dragging me into games on steam, and MO2 in LoL doesn't help I'm sure.
>see the advertisements for it
>holy crap that looks awesome
>fighting game with RPG elements
>can remove clothings from opponents
>actually emulate it years later
>none of that is really true
I was just disappointed.
I just realized the floor is reflective in that cg.
>Want to post most detailed .gif someone's done for me.
>It's fucking 5MB's
Take this instead
And that all for today, I'm gonna eat something and watch some sc2.
Nice. Aren't there several others like that as well?
