I wonder, are many of these sprites hand-drawn and scanned in for coloring/digitization, or do many of the artists have tablets or really, really good mouse handling?
Asking because I'm trying to get not shit at this stuff.
Most sprites are either drawn by hand on paper and then clean up on the computer with photoshop, or they're 3D renders that are traced after they're positioned into each pose, then cleaned up in photoshop.
That's what I suspected (minus the Photoshop part), going pure pixel-art seems really, really difficult for anything past a fairly small resolution.
Now, how was PC-98 shit like pic related done? I've been told Deluxe Paint (I have Grafx2, which is a clone), but what kind of wizard could pull that off?
I'd say though Arc did a terrific job to literally make them literally look like sprites. If they kept everything at the side, and NOT rotated in the reveal trailer, everyone would've though "OH THEY'RE KEEPING SPRITES!"

Well, we're extremely early in developement. The game's barely anything but an idea and a physics engine at this point. Quality spritework isn't that important a priority at this point.
This sprite actually was made by me. I'm very proud of it.
The pose is very static. Assuming that is an enemy and it is in a battle situation, it's pose would definitively not be "standing straight while stretching my arm foward and holding this axe perpendiculary".
Outside of that, the palettes are fine (besides the third one, which could use a bit of darknening), and the shading, while fine in some areas such as the wings, seens randomly selective (no shading in the head or in most of the axe, for example).
I always love seeing these threads, because I can usually find something I haven't seen before.

The animation in that game was really smooth, at least in the platforming segments in between fights.

It's not shit, anon. It's really good. Part of me tells me you know that and are just fishing for compliments.
It's the same artist under different industry standards. It's much faster to work this way, and it's all about time, getting shit done as quickly as possible.
Blazblue does this, so does Dragon's Crown and the likes of those ultra HD sprites. It makes for more accurate animation and still looks pretty.
Many artists actually feel this was a godsend because they can now create absolutely stunning AND fluid animation without blowing up all their nerves. It's not cheating, it's using tools. 3D models are a tool.
I seem to recall reading they were working on it, but I dont know whether they just gave up on that or what.

For an amateur who was fucking around, sure, I guess it ain't bad, but in the grand scene of things, my spriting and animating ability leaves a lot to be desired.

i have no idea what game the backgrounds are from, I just know only fighting games got this treatment.
fuck modern "retro" designs like fez and shit like that, why doesn't somebody make a modern game using artwork and animations like this? I imagine the reason why these are relegated to only fighting game backgrounds is because those games barely took anything to run, its just a static stage with 2 variable fighters on screen. Why doesn't somebody use the technology we have now to create games using this artsyle in ways that they couldn't before due to technical limitations.
I remember seeing an artbook for one of those old H-games and they pretty much took a normal cel-painting and ran it through filters.

Aquaria, rayman, Braid. Those are what you'll get, ie non-grid but still with element reuse. Fighting game backgrounds can afford to be the way they are because they only need to cover small areas.

It's too pricy. Good pixel art generally takes more work than good art by itself, because you need to start with the artwork and then translate it into animated pixels. It's easier just to animate a drawing in Flash or to go with a more basic pixel artstyle for the game.
The reason that SNK and Capcom could get away with it was that they were re-using their artwork in multiple games, so that it eventually paid for itself.
shovelknight is actually accurate to NES graphics, not indieretrodogshit. Of course its nothing like the stuff I'm posting, but it doesn't look like the stuff we're complaining about. I definitely recommend it, though it is a bit short.
I love this art direction..forgot what it was called when you have this dot-matrix shadows. Because if I recall correctly, that's the limitation of the style. But to me, it adds to it.
I actually have aquaria on my wishlist. Fuck rayman and braid though. Those aren't what I'm talking about at all. Especially rayman, fuck the everloving shit out of that artstyle. I want pixels, not ultra smooth rounded corners on everything so it looks like a saturday morning cartoon.

well, I imagine it will be getting some thought put into it sometime soon, since every indie and their mother are going for retro graphics to be cool. Hopefully in another few years they will move on to better stuff like that and then maybe in another 5 years or so it will go to low poly 3D. Low poly stuff can look great too.
"Art like that" was created, because they could only use 16 colors; that's also why they used darker pixels to add shading. Now you can use 64 million colors, so dithering isn't needed, you just use the color you need.

This one thing i extremely loved and enjoyed from this game was the sprites. As well as the character, but goddamn it those sprites were deliciously good. Namco x Capcom also has good stuff too.

Coming. A save bug issue forced me to sit down and figure out a work around for a while. I THINK it's more stable now, waiting to hear back from a few others on that + spell checking before I push it out.
The bug thought was wonky, as it would trigger only if you got a game over, loaded a save, and then on your second fight would crash the game.
Least you aren't dead, hope you get that save bug fixed.

I doubt I'm going to die anytime soon, just have very long periods of "I'm not the best programmer who just happens to get good connections" in where I run into a wall and very little gets done till I chip it down.
