Remember this game, /v/. Does it still hold up?
>>
It was fun when I was younger, but at this point I can't get much enjoyment out if it anymore. It's a reskin of the first Puyo Puyo game, which is arguably the worst game in the Puyo Puyo series. The ai is so stupid it'll kill itself faster than it'll kill you, and it's missing the core game mechanic that makes the sequels so fun. You can beat Robotnik by just doing one or two 3-chains since he's too stupid to make chains himself.

So, I'd say if you know much at all about Puyo Puyo it doesn't hold up as well as it used to, I personally don't find myself playing it anymore. However, if you're clueless about Puyo Puyo, or have no interest in playing the more updated renditions of the game, you'd probably still enjoy it.

Who are you talking to? No one mentioned story mode.

It's fine
I was never good at it though

Oh God, the rape that ensued.
I struggled to get simple combos and he cleared that shit on lightning speed.

The multiplayer track is hilariously frenetic considering how the match starts (ie beans falling slowly to the insanely fast music)
>>
>>256777078
The reason for that is because the track was originally used for the final boss fight. The track is even called "Final of Puyo"

>>256779063
Well, regardless of whether or not you care, my main problem with the way puzzle fighter handles chaining is that you have to use orbs to break your pieces. In puyo puyo, you'd pop pieces if they're in groups of 4 or higher, so you'd just separate puyos with another color, and when they color pops everything just chains. In Puzzle Fighter you group your pieces similarily, but since you have to have colored orbs touching for it to break, I feel like it makes the chaining a lot more limited, and makes the game a lot more slow paced in general. If you don't get lucky and have the right colored orb drop down when you need it, you can't really build your chains up as big as you might want to. I also think the game doesn't really allow you to set up for comebacks as easily as Puyo Puyo does, so it's kind of a first attack wins kind of game.

>>
>>256779771
There is a version for the SNES.
>>
>>256779709
Tl;dr version: Puzzle Fighter's chaining isn't as well thought out and the game is slower.
>>
>>256779637
>I also think the game doesn't really allow you to set up for comebacks as easily as Puyo Puyo does, so it's kind of a first attack wins kind of game.

nigga pls, have you actually ever played the game? The orbs allow you to set them up before the opponents does damage to you, +there is the crystal that breaks all the blocks of the same colour.
Yes, there is less emphasis on chaining in puzzle fighter, but you have more countering your opponents play. The only thing I dislike about it is the crystal bug, which should be removed
>>
>>256779771
I'm glad I'm not the only fan of wario's woods
It's the only puzzle game I actually got into.
>>
>>256775071
I loved playing this game as a kid and still play it today. Reskin or not, it was fun as fuck.
>>
>>256780683
The issue with mbm isn't that it's a reskin, it's that it's based off of the only version of the game where you can't offset.
>>
>>256775071

Puyo Puyo is eternal anon.
>>
As much as i like Puzzle Fighter, the problem with Puzzle fighter is that picking anyone but Ken was pretty much detrimental to your chances of winning because of the counter gem patterns. Like Donovan is alright but not really anyone else.
>>
I was playing Mean Bean Machine just yesterday for the first time in a while. I was getting pretty pissed though, because I would line up a chain and then suddenly out of nowhere a random block drop would happen and i'd be cut off. It wouldn't stop happening.

It's a good game, some mechanics are too abusable in 2 players but the rest is good.
>>
>>256781359
The ai is really spammy in the earlier puyo puyo games. They didn't start doing actual chains until puyo puyo fever, but at that point you had to deal with the ai knowing how to make chains a length of 6-9 on hard mode.

>I will never be able to do longer than 4 chain bursts in glorious classic Puyo Puyo 2
>>
>>256783304
but the stairs spam strategy all new players use is 5 chains.
surely you can at least do that.
>>
>>256783471
Just out of accidents, I can get them. The biggest accident chain I got was probably an 8 hitter, shit was awesome. I've never planned out any longer chain than that, because I always get interrupted so I never bothered learning how. I don't really know what you mean by stair spam.
>>
>>256783727
Well, if you want me to explain:
This is the stairs pattern. A lot of newer players involuntarily start doing it because it's simple to look at and easy to do without messing up.

2:2
http://www.puyonexus.net/chainsim/?chain=65470065470886547886547

It's possible to extend it past just a 5 or 6 chain, like so, but you have to know what you're doing. Stairs is generally something you only do on the first floor of your chain. It tends to cause color conflict if you do it on the second floor. So, on the second floor of this chain I did something called the sandwich pattern, also known as the key pattern.

http://www.puyonexus.net/chainsim/?chain=700000600000745700457660745760745760756480675648675648675648
>>
>>256784384
Oh yeah, that stuff, yeah. Sure. Like I said, it's rare to pull that off against a person. By the 2nd setup they'd already be sending clear goo.
>>
>>256785215
Most people don't use stairs for that reason. It's pretty easily affected by nuisance attacks. Some other patterns are less susceptible, and can be fixed or modified more easily. If you play at a fast pace and are confident in your chaining you'll be able to deal with small attacks much more easily. This stuff is all a bit above your current skill level though. Just know that once you get good at chaining getting interrupted becomes less of an issue, so not trying to chain because you're worried about interruptions is actually backwards thinking. Beating a player who only does small 2-3 chains is simple.
>>
You're free to enjoy the themes for the classic Madou cast in the Puyo games, but Fever 2 did at least bring us these two sexy tracks.

My favorite fever era theme is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuTwVEAkxYM

It brings back fond memories of losing to Howhow bird, over and over and over. Raffine's story is seriously way too hard for beginners, even if you whore out fever mode.

Before the thread is over, did you want me to give you some pointers on where to start out in regards to learning how to chain, or are you still disinterested?

Personally, I kind of liked some of the translated battle phrases. But yeah, the main issue was definitely the marketing. They should have tried going for the mean bean machine nostalgia crowd. They might have gotten some people that way.

>>256788772
I still never 1cc'd it. Then again, I haven't tried in months, maybe I can get it now. I did get Carbuncle due to the 7 continues trick though, and I noticed the easter egg in the credits changes a bit if you do carbuncle.
