Stop being more desperate than M$ itself.

They need to sell Halo, because on any other account, their precious little console is not worth a penny.
It is worthless even with these rehashes, but at least they can convince those easily parted with their money.

The comment is on the fact they will include PC-only maps in the game.

Recoil is basically a balanced equation.

You can't suddenly add numbers to one side of an equation, you would have to balance it out.
Ergo, recoil being the mathematically equivalent force (given mass, etc) opposing it.

It depends on where it's located, or in more technical terms where the force vector is.
If it's aligned with the centre of mass then it's just going to be a force backwards (in the A-10s case, this will be countered by its own momentum and engines). If the force vector is not aligned, then it will give the whole thing a spin, mass centre being the pivot point of that spin.
A small gun firing on a battleship doesn't really need to be centred, as it's a relatively small force compared to the huge mass of the ship. However if you watch any large WW2 battleship fire its main guns sideways, you'll see it roll a bit (IIRC in some cases badly balanced ships would roll so much they'd turn upside down).

The gun on the OPs ship is also way bigger than the A-10s relative to the actual vehicle. Also its a single, high powered shot, which means a sudden, quick impulse that will strain the structure terribly. Considering the placement, it would throw the ship off balance and basically make it turn upwards like a pistol when fired.

>>
>>256763158

Hand is holding the grip, and since your grip is very strong (relative to the force of the recoil), it's basically as if the grip weighed a lot more, hence it moves the mass centre down towards it, maybe even past it (well not really, the real mass centre of the pistol is the same, but the effect of your grip is the same as moving it down a lot), making the whole thing pivot around that (and since the force vector is above the mass centre, it will make it turn counter-clockwise).

Try holding a pistol upside down, and yu'll see it now is forced downwards.

That doesn't answer the question of how they fly. They simply hover above the ground. The ships that you see crashing, like the flood controlled ship that crashes into africa, also seem to glide without having wings.

Realistic ship design would involve something like faceless, ovoids. Unrealistic ship design is something like EVE, where the ship profiles are semi-fucked but they still work within basic reasoning.

Star Wars and Star Citizen slap transparent panels on everything and avoid logic like the plague. Coincidentally ships of both the movie franchise and SC were made by the same guy.

Glass cockpits are useless in space because they are a massive weakpoint and at the ranges where space combat would take place realistically, your eyes will be useless.
After all it's already happening with modern combat aircraft, who have 50km+ range on their missiles and dogfights are absurdly rare.

I can understand maybe having the possibility of raiding a armour plate to reveal a window in case all your other sensors and cameras are damaged and you need to land, but in combat? Nah, if there was a window it would be locked down behind armour, too big a weakpoint.

If you can see an enemy craft in space combat, there's a very good chance it's obscenely close to you. If you're in SPACE, where navigation by sight is almost entirely useless, why would you bother relying on this for combat? Did everyone forget to use Radio or something?

Realistic space combat isn't fun, I agree, but some of these ships are baffling. Like the Idris being completely off-kilter, or having the engines obscenely close to the engines and bridge.

As far as I remember, doesn't the Imperium Man have a whole heresy thing when it comes to actually building new spaceships? Hundreds of EVE ships are churned out daily being piloted by essentially infinite clones and being funded by unimaginably rich people.
>>
>>256769706
Yeah but they've got no hesitation in unleashing planet killing weapons. They're happy to lose millions of men and thousands of ships and have they entire population of a system killed with the planets reduced to wastelands. As long as it remains THEIR wasteland.
>>
>>256768421

The Imperium would have to win it in one strike. They only have a limited number of ships (that they barely know how to fly, and cannot replace) where as EVE has Hundreds of ships constantly being produced, and pilots that come back to life to rejoin the fight.

In a battle of attrition EVE wins because eventually the Imperium would run out of ships to keep sending into the grinder.

Going strictly by game numbers there's roughly 8,000 solar systems in EVE, with most likely many more than just aren't in the game. I can't really find any up to date lists on the number of Titans, but as of 2011 it was somewhere around 400 and has grown exponentially with the overall wealth of the playerbase.

Like I said, pilots in EVE are just as happy to fight and die for even the most minor thing simply because they're immortal. There are easily 10 times as many cloning stations as there are solar systems, and that's only those that exist on space stations, planets surely have even more, and again those are many times the number of systems that they exist in.

Those ships have lots of weapon systems that can target enemy spacecraft located anywhere nearby (missiles, for example), but the MAC Gun is so large relative to the overall size of the vessel and so powerful that to have it rotate and then fire would probably put the craft into an uncontrolled spin, without extreme countering from thrusters. By having the MAC Gun face forward, the ship can use its main engines to counteract the forces released when a round is fired.

tl;dr those frigates are really really cool and their slow reload time make for interesting tactics

>>

It's probably derived from early rocketry, before they had invented fairings, when everything had to be perfectly symmetrical or else the rocket wouldn't be able to pull a proper atmosphere turn and would eat shit at a few thousand meters.

Obviously nobody's going to pre-build a ship like this and THEN launch it into space, that'd be fucking retarded.
>>
>>256760827

Because the UNSC literally builds ships on top of the biggest guns humanity can make.

Seriously.

They build MACs then work out how to fit a shit around them.

Or, in the case of the larger ships, attach multiple MACs together then build ship around and between. That is why some of the ships look so whack.

>>
>>256785053
Let me give you an insider perspective in the industry of transferring scientifically/historically sound ideas into the visual medium. This is all based on my actual experience.

Let me draw you an example. Imagine you've designed a fantasy setting based off of Eastern Slavic mythology. Tatars, Ukrainian Cossacks, Poles, Russians adventurers, etc. You have this dashing image of men in played kuyak armor with conical helms and bar nasels, dashing winged hussars skewering lasso-wielding Tatars with their lassoes. Koschei the Deathless with his bardiche sits drinking tea out of a samovar fed by wood chips in a little riverside cottage, and answers the players' questions.

Now you hand all of this to your concept artist, and he produces knights with 11th century lances, 15th century plate armor riding horses with no stirrups on a battlefield fighting Pre-Marian Reform Romans. Some of the Romans have pistols.

Concept artists and designers are literally THE most stupid fucking people in the world. They don't know shit about anything, they only know what appeals to their nurtured plebean sense of aesthetics, and unless you beat them with a garden hose, they will NEVER do anything right.
With space ships, it is 100 times worse because that's not just common sense, it's complex science.

Most devs just aren't willing to give them shit over it, so you end up with these ludicrous designs.
>>
>>256785950
looks like my cigar lighter.
>>
>>256782360
Because you generate heat in scale with your volume and dissipate heat in scale with your surface area. It's square-cube law at work, and sooner or later you're going to be a very warm spaceship, meaning:
1) You're a very hot body on a relatively cool interstellar background i.e. A BIG FUCKING TARGET.
2) People, and to a lesser extent, machines don't like being super hot.

A practical design would need a big ass fucking heat sink attached to it to radiate all your waste heat as thermal radiation, because no convection or conduction in space.

Trying to bring actual science into space combat makes everything impossibly unfun. IR cameras are perfectly accurate enough even with current technology to analyze the speed and temperature of your exhaust plume and know where you're going and how fast you're going. Its impossible to hide in space unless you're behind a large object; by virtue of having electronics or people or engines of any sort, you're by default warmer than the background. Settings with laser weaponry would devolve into who shoots who first, because its impossible to hide and impossible to dodge. Settings without laser weapons would devolve into endless juking of projectiles.

A spherical ship would offer the best volume/surface area ratio and should be the go-to design for any non-combat vessles.

A disc shaped ship could potentially offer the minimum frontal area/volume ratio when orientated correctly, and therefore would be the most practical design for combat vessles. Although this advantage would only work in one direction, so only ships which engage at long distances would benefit.
>>
>>256787294
think about the amount of fuel it would take to stabilize that thing while firing relative to the amount of fuel it would take to move something that large. At that rate you probably just be better off making a battery of self destructing smaller ships. You lose one engine and your gun perhaps even your ship is fucked it's impractical.

Nukes aren't great in space because the vast majority of the energy they release is initially x-rays. As straight radiation they're subject to Inverse Square Law, and fall off in strength very quickly.

Explosives are terribad without an atmosphere to carry a pressure wave, really. You're better off with directed energy or particle weapons or just plain shrapnel moving at high/relativistic speeds.

any large spacecraft would need a shit ton of radiation shielding. After all what's the point of having something that big if you can't take it anywhere.

>>
>>256789694
what about the atmosphere INSIDE THE SHIP
you know, all that lovely oxygen that the human beings inside are breathing
>>
>>256789415
Oh sure, if it detonates on impact, then yes, you get a lot of energy being transmitted very quickly. Heck, within a few kilometers, you might be okay

But "a few kilometers" in Space is incredibly, incredibly close. In-atmosphere, nukes have effective radiuses of several kilometers. In space, maybe more like one or two.
>>
>>256779656
What universe is that?
>>
>>256788362
Not always, look up Banner of the Stars, for space elves pounding humanity in the ass with swarms of atomic drone rockets.
>>
>>256789656

As far as games go Halo takes their pseudo-science very seriously.

Besides, it has the best design/future for Humanity out there; we get our interstellar Empire without becoming tinfoil skirt wearing SJW progressives.

>>256789832
If a ship were designed effectively only the areas that really need to have life support would have it. So why make a vessel that's primary purpose is not people transport have air everywhere? You could always put on a very compact life support suit if you needed to go into one of those other areas of the ship.
>>
>>256789912
>it has the best design/future for Humanity out there
agree to disagree
>>
>>256789832
Which is orders of magnitude further away from a hypothetical space nuke than the Earth's atmosphere is from a terrestrial nuke. Radiation decreases in strength (i.e. energy per unit area) with the square of the radius; if your missile isn't practically touching the enemy space ship when it explodes, good luck actually harming the damn thing.

Why all this wank to nuclear missiles? Throwing shit around in space is difficult and inefficient. Just use a directed energy weapon and melt holes in their spaceship. Or melt their heatsinks and watch them cook their own crew.

Am I the only one who found it hilarious how star trek dismissed lasers with"they are not powerful enough" when phasers are the exact same concept. Also the excuse in halo is that laser weapons don't exist so all weapons either shoot super heated plasma, missiles or accelerated pellets of metal.

Star Citizen ship designs are pretty obnoxious and terrible. I think the Mustang is the worst offender of that. But even ships like the hornet have stupid shit too, like for some reason it has to have a lot wings.

that ship was retarded, there was only one port in the whole of nazi held, atlantic facing, territory that could hold it. So the brits just filled an old WWI boat with explosives and rammed it into that dock, blowing it to bits. The huge nazi ship was then forced to just hang around the north sea before it was sunk as it had nowhere to dock if it was damaged in the atlantic. In the end it didn't even sink a single allied vessel.
