Four Swords Adventures is meant to be played with 1 Gamecube and 4 GBAs. You would use a special link cable to connect the GBAs to the Gamecube. The GBA screen would relay extra information, kinda like the Wii U gamepad.
There is also the Game Boy Player, which played GBA games on a Gamecube. You could connect the link cable to this instead of a GBA.
The Game Boy Player either lets you use a Gamecube controller, or a GBA via another link cable.
