I would try to make the Wii U the console of niche games for the supposedly 'hardcore' audience, while on the other hand also making sure kids get their fun high quality games. I'd also resurrect a bunch of dead IPs that Nintendo has locked away.

I don't get the obsession with 4k tvs. Nobody is going to significally produce content for them. Cable/satellite companies? Have to compress the fuck out of any HD content they have already. Broadcasters? Fuck no, they are not redoing all their equipment again. Internet streaming? The internet infrastructure is already hard pressed to keep up with the demand for existing HD.

Marketing campaign to ensure that people understand it's actually a new system in the casual crowd (I explained to a couple dozen people last week that the Wii U was different from a Wii, so clearly success of recognition is limited)

Continue with the MK8 displays to tempt people into buying.

Continue the sort of a"buy one, download one" promotions with the next big hits on the system (Smash, for example, logically).

Increase the robustness of the virtual console library while dropping the prices. Make it less about the profit margin per title and more as a reason for casuals to want the system (as casuals would actually want to buy Roms)

Sony is trying to be at the start of the race so that when the technology catches up, they'll be the established game in town.

However, that's a strategy that worked very well in the 90s, but not now. Innovations on things like cable/internet quality, television display quality and size (with which the aforementioned service quality could keep up, etc), the obvious and universal advantages of DVD over VHS that anyone with any TV could appreciate...those were big deals to be there for.

Comparatively, a slightly higher signal when many people don't have much graphical appreciation (hell, look at the ongoing FPS debate and tell me if someone who thinks 30 is as good as 60 can appreciate 4k over HD), at much greater expense and intensity.

4k is shaping up to be the new 3D; good for movie theaters, but little else.

Honestly the only thing Nintendo should do now is do some more marketing for the console itself, make it clear it's not an addon for the Wii and show more of it's games.

Other than that there's nothing else they could do.
Maybe a price cut or something but that's very improbable. Third Party developers are also dead to them. Maybe try to get some more Indie developers on board but have some real quality control over them.

Honestly, I think the "Nintendo should go software only" threads are just proof that most of the internet has no idea how business works.

They think that just because Nintendo would sell more games, they'd make more money. They don't seem to realize that licensing fees are a thing.
