It'd be a spoiler so I won't say, it's not major at all but I think you'd appreciate not knowing until it happens.

Are you playing it censored or uncensored?
I've played it originally no my SNES, then on my WiiU when it came out for the VC, and I'm currently replaying it after finishing Mother without the easy ring, but with a patch that follows Mato's legendsoflocalization fixes for Mother 2. Game is great, so I hope you keep pushing forward. If the game ever feels like it's getting too tough for you, just take a step back and realize you're probably over thinking it. It's actually a very easy game.

yeah the first game is so damned awesome. mother 3 was cool too but it lost the charm of earthbound. I liked how parts of it were in a comfy normal neighborhood. and the music was so cool.

Fuck those 1/128 chances. I like MOTHER 3's 3% chance better.

True, but it had its own little charm and style that was almost just as good.

What item from Mother 3 is that?
>>
>>256038994
Any of the ultimate items. From what I can remember off the top of my head, the Mystical Stick from the Heftyheads, the Horus Bandanna from the Upgraded Robots, the Goddess Ribbon from the Love Walkers, and the Mystical Gloves from the Monkalruses.

Why they fuck would Monkey-Walruses even HAVE gloves?
>>
>>256040464
To keep their flippers warm.
>>
So it's definately worth going through Mother1 before Earthbound?
>>
>>256040728
I would say so, but if you can't handle an old school Famicom/NES RPG you might not enjoy it.
>>
>>256031528
Play Mother 3 after finishing Earthbound, it's even better in my opinion.
>>
>>256040728
yes, it's just as good as 2 and 3. You won't really understand the story in Earthbound if you skip it as well.
>>
>>256031528
Earthbound 2/Mother 3 is better, you need to play it asap after you finish Earthbound. ASAP.

The GBA fan translation is miles easier and has a more accurate translation, however the music doesn't sound as good and some (like me) prefer the NES version for a few reasons including the charm of some of the original translations, the much better audio and the original 4:3 resolution. I'd say to play the GBA version if you want to take the easy road but the NES version is superior in my opinion.

Wait, what now?
>>
Guys, guys, hey guys.
I just moved out and have a steady income for the first time in my life. I've gotten pretty good at budgeting and I've always wanted to purchase a copy of Earthbound for the SNES.

Should I go for it?
It's like 500 bucks minimum if you want a good copy
>>
>>256043601
That's a rip off. Just wait for the hype to die down. They're nowhere near worth as much as that.
>>
>>256044280
They've been going for $700 per copy until just now.
>>
>>256041257
That's overstating things slightly. Mother 1 gives extra dimentions to Earthbound's story, but Earthbound is perfectly self-contained without needing to play Mother 1.
>>
>>256044280
>Just wait for the hype to die down.
are you serious? they've been expensive for a very long time
the price is all over the place
there's some on amazon for 150$ or so

It's a relatively rare cartridge of a beloved cult classic. 500 bucks is on the cheaper end and it's only going to grow as time goes by.
>>
>>256044391
Yeah, if you want to be ignorant to the whole overarching story and not want to understand the series as a whole.
>>
>>256038240
for sure. it's a good game too for sure. it just wasn't as good as the original for me and i played both for the first time a year ago last summer.

All you really get from M1 is Giygas was raised by Mary and George and has fond memories of them, therefore human love (In the form of Mary's lullabye) is his weakness which is a cool detail to bring with you into Earthbound, but it's not REALLY required. Like I said, Mother 1 deepens your understanding of the background lore, but the game itself is perfectly playable and self-contained if you just want to play Earthbound.

You're making it sound like playing Earthbound before Mother 1 will make the player lost or confused as to what's going on, which just isn't true.
>>
>>256045348
It is true, I've talked to many people on /v/ and other places who have thought Giygas was just some manifestation of evil, having played Earthbound and not Mother. In order to understand some of the main themes behind Mother 2, and the series as a whole you would have to play Mother 1. I'm not saying one could not enjoy Earthbound without doing so, but they definitely wouldn't understand the actual story or themes.
>>
No, forget this outdated trash Mother 4 will be way better
>>
You can skip Mother 1.

Just read the lore, and pray that someone makes a Mother 1 hack from Earthbound assets someday.
>>
My favorite part was right after beating giygas the background starts swaying around real fast and it turns into the part you see when you boot up the game.
Thought it was fucking cool as a kid.
>>
>>256046427
There is a remake that has been in development for quite some time and is almost finished in fact. But you really should play Mother 1, you're missing out.

Some of this stuff just sounds nitpicky like the swearing, since a lot of japanese words could mean a whole bunch of different English words, and Threek, and scaraba and a lot of the names

But the blues brothers and alcohol stuff is nice though.

>>256049556
Well, the swearing isn't that bad, but I see what you mean.

Could you go into a little more detail? What do you think people miss out on if they don't play Mother 1 first? Just asking this because I really feel the anon you replied to is right; the main thing is that people who start with Earthbound won't know what Giygas is all about. I played through Earthbound first and I was expecting to face a megalomaniac alien warlord/conqueror as the final boss, but instead ended up encountering some kind of formless pure evil entity. It was mentioned that the creature hadn't always been like that though, and things got particularly disturbing when it tried to talk to Ness. Playing through Mother 1 finally let me know what kind of being Giygas used to be before everything went wrong for him, and it made Earthbound's ending more tragic in hindsight.

But I think that's the main issue, and one can understand the game just fine even without playing Mother 1. The core themes of the game are clear enough since there's a lot of emphasis on positive messages. Tons of NPCs give the player characters their love and encouragement throughout the game, and there are moments where the game makes you feel bad for beating up bad guys. In certain spots, help from those who care about you is essential in order to advance. With or without the knowledge of Giygas' backstory, love and friendship are the heart of Earthbound.
