Saving the world just 'cause it's "the right thing to do" is a shit motive. So is destroying it just for shits and giggles.
So what are good and acceptable motives for good guys and bad guys?
I don't need a good reason to beat your ass OP
How about saving the world because I don't want to live in post-apocalyptic shithole where most of the people I know will be dead?
You don't have to be a fucking saint to want to save the world
>Saving the world just 'cause it's "the right thing to do" is a shit motive
>I'M DESTROYING THE WORLD TO SAVE IT
because in real life you can't just "save" the world
world's a complex place, you can stop starvation by punching Lord Hunger in the testicles. Now if I could give food to millions of starving kids by punching one evil dude in the gonads? Damn right I'd spend half my life training to punch that fucker real good
No. Saving the world is a good motive in itself.
>OP thinks being 17 means he understand good logic and reasoning
>OP doesn't realize the only reason anyone does anything is for shits and gigs
>OP has a lot of growing up to do
Saving the world is not a bad motive, whether it's an INTERESTING motive is a little more up to debate. Obviously a personal story like Planescape Torment tend to interest audiences a bit more.
Because if the world isn't destroyed, we foolish organics will inevitably build some kind of synthetic race that will inevitably destroy us. By destroying the world now, sure, the outcome is the same, but at least neither the organics nor synthetics get any more time to enjoy living.
>saving the world because its the right thing to do is retarded
This is probably the stupidest thing I've ever read on 4chan. Did you ever think that maybe the other part of it being the right thing to do is that if they don't EVERYONE DIES?
>Edge edge mcedgy edge
>Implying the world needs saving from anything
>Implying we're not doing incredibly well for ourselves and should be proud of our rich history and strong future growth
there's more resources than food. if you only secure the food supply you'll run out of others, eastern china is already running out of drinking water at the moment, for example.
World hunger is more complicated than just "make more food". If that were the case I would totally punch the baddy in the face.
Once again /v/ comes together to prove that they have the absolute worst taste in anything.
I mean who needs personal goals? Who needs characters with believable motivations that make them feel more lifelike and less like banal cardboard? Nah, let's just continue fist pumping to all the Black vs White trite out there.
Stories where time travellers get stuck in loops trying to save loved ones always get me. Situations involving loved ones are kinda easy I guess but they're usually pretty agreeable motivations. Situations where bad guys fuck loads of people over just to save their precious waifu really annoy me though.
Is there any games where a character goes on a quest just because it's something to do as like a hobby?
OP here. I should've known not to post a thread like this when the americlaps are awake. I guess it's a topic that requires more maturity than night time /v/ possesses to discuss adult concepts such as character motivation.
Anyway, my point wasn't that saving the world is a bad thing as long as it's a by product of your own personal journey. If saving the world is what you need to do to achieve your own goal then that's fine, but if it's your only purpose in the story and the characters motivation is solely based on saving the world then it's weak writing meant for children who still get excited over Naruto and his "believe it!" bullshit.
The world is going to be destroyed. However, it won't happen until after the good guys have died of old age. To save it in the future, action must be taken now. Is this good enough motivation OP?
>If saving the world is what you need to do to achieve your own goal then that's fine
I think I understand what you're trying to say but your wording is way too easy to dismiss as nonsense.
