Okay, being 100% honest with myself here, if someone is YOUNG enough, overly violent material while they're still developing can have an ill effect. They won't suddenly become murderers, like that fucker Thompson likes to pretend, but it has an effect, just like a child watching his dad beat someone. There's some desensitizing there.

However, that's why we have a ratings system. That's why parents have a means to see when something is not appropriate for their child. You can't full-blown have the government raising everyone's kids, you have to leave things to parents and personal responsibility.

That said, the effect of a video game, while it IS there for someone young, is not serious enough to warrant being worried that it'll cause them to shoot a school. That's just ridiculous political posturing.

You have to be already damaged in your brain in order to not be able to separate reality and fiction properly. One schizophrenic guy I talked to was named "Patrick" and he refered to himself as "Patz9", the nine being pronounced as "efgiz" so it was basically "Patzefgiz" which was his strange idea of pronuncing "Pacifist" claiming that he heard that name over and over again in his head and it got more distorted if he ignores it. He stabbed his grandmother nearly dead when they were in the kitchen and his grandmother - who was then unaware of his condition, just Patrick's parents - handed him a kitchen knife to help her cut a chicken into smaller pieces. He visualized that the chicken was secretly his grandmother testing to see if he would cut her, and he thought that he could only prove his awareness of her transformed 2nd person by actually stabbing his grandmother (the real one, not delusional chicken one) in the back a few times. Once she broke down he felt like he stabbed her a few weeks ago and been standing there ever since but he ended up being able to call an ambulance.

Tl;dr Mentally ill people are going to be mentally ill, no matter if it's a violent video game, a song, a knife, or a mere intrusive thought.
