And people say that MGS2 is not the greatest MGS game.

I can't believe that the guy who wrote 4 wrote that. Just every dialogue from the point of meeting President Johnson until the end is on point. Who would have predicated the internet hype machine making what would have been otherwise mediocre games/movies into GOATs

Raiden was a faggot and hearing hours upon hours of him getting bitched at by his gf was awful. Big shell was an awful location. MGS2 was sandwiched in between 2 better games.

I just finished this game this week and I concurr with most of the people in this thread. When I saw that part I was astounded. It's fucking incredible and amazing the way everything ends. The final boss is a little boring, but the whole context is amazing.

Why is RAY such a badass? I'm pissed that they decided to make REX hax in MGS4 when clearly RAY is superior to it.
>>

>>
>>255549142
It was an allegory for genetics, stating that mass produced weak genes will become destroyed by a time tested results Or it's just that Rex is fuckin badass
>>
>>255545984
Just because it's story included an element that is very similar to things that are happening today does not make it the best MGS game anon. There are many other aspects to judge a game by.

MGS2 is fucking awesome though.
>>
>>255549142
I get that RAY is supposed to be an anti-metal gear machine (more like anti-fake massproduced metal gear), but no. REX is where it's at, it's designed to last.
>>
>>255549409
Well it was the climax to an entire act dedicated to MGS1 nostalgia, so.
>>
>>255549527
In my opinion MGS2 had the best gameplay.
But the environment was boring, most of the plot sucked (until the last act), and the music made me tired for some weird reason
>>
>>255549527
MGS2 has great gameplay and it's the hardest to get Big Boss rank on. Also, I have more fun fucking around in MGS2 than I do in any other MGS game. And it's harder to not get caught and then harder to get out of alert.
>>
>>255549409
They're both great, shut up.
>>
>>255549142
Rex = King, ya dumb fuck.
>>
>>255549142
RAY can be killed by 3 stinger missiles. REX can take a hell of a lot more than that.

ZEKE > REX > RAY
>>
MGS2 had a story that really made you think and wonder who is running the world, but that gameplay was shit.
>>
>>255549794
If you look at the cutscenes after you beat the boss battle Raiden at most beats none of the RAYs, and at most takes out one. The RAYs that you see in the cutscenes are still in the A series.
>>
>>255549939
git gud lol
>>
>>255549756
difficulty != quality

I do agree that it had the best gameplay of the old style of stealth, which was more arcadey and less actual stealth.

I'd have to say I love all the games just about equally, with 1 being just maybe a bit higher than the rest, and PW being a tad lower.
>>
>>255549767
Wasn't talking about the games, but the nostalgia around them. REX won because MGS1 has much more nostalgia around it.
>>
>>255550149
And that it's a way cooler and more believable design than RAY.

Also, RAY can't even fire nukes. That automatically neuters it and makes it the bastard child.
>>
>>255549960
>If you look at the cutscenes after you beat the boss battle Raiden at most beats none of the RAYs

How the hell did you get that? He's exhausted because he killed 25 of them and they still don't stop. The A series thing is most likely a game limitation.
>>
>>255549960
Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. None of it matters, because after the RAY fight, Solidus kills 3 RAYs with a P90 sub-machine gun. It took about 10 bullets for each RAY. That is the ultimate showcase of RAY's inferiority.
>>
You know you can figure out that the colonel is an AI very early on in the game? At the start of the game (Plant chapter) when you go for a swim, the Colonel will tell you how to swim, he'll do so by talking as if it's an AI doing a recorded speech. He'll do this for a lot of basic instructions that you can call him for.

>>255550097
Not saying that difficulty = good, but I'd argue that difficulty (proper and balanced difficulty) is one facet that makes a game good. If you don't feel like you're being challenged, then I wouldn't call the game good unless if offered a lot of other things.
>>
>>255550284
RAY is a sloppy party bottom.
>>
>>255550070
I was good. Too good. The tranq gun made short work or any enemy set up. Every time Ocelot asks why the guards are late on their status report, I would just leave the area and come back to interrupt the process.

He's definitely not the first person to warn us this, but MGS2 did a good job in packaging the message in something other than an essay to be read, but as a story to be experienced.
>>
>>255550629
The entire game the colonel talks pretty monotone and bland even though he didn't in mgs1 further proving he was ai.

He also describes the soliton radar word for word of how mei ling describes it.
>>
>>255550149
REX won by using it's weapons and Otacon's firmware update. There's no nostalgia about it. Those AT missiles from REX weren't hurting RAY with their "nostalgia".
>>
>>255551004
Yeah but you could chalk that up to it being a game. Snake and Rose also repeat themselves after you call them enough.
>>
>>255551068
>Using anything but the laser in that fight
It just destroys like 20% of RAYs healthbar every time at full power
>>
>>255549142
Here's a kicker
RAY was designed to REX killer
Just like how Liquid was supposed to be the superior clone
In spite of this, REX defeats RAY just like how Solid Snake overall wins out over his brother.
>>
>>255550371
>How the hell did you get that?
Because Every RAY during the Boss fight has lettering that goes from A to E and you can see it on the RAYs themselves. And if Raiden defeated all 25, why would he be dejected. He wasn't just exhausted, he was dejected. It could just be that Kojima chose the first 3 just because, but I doubt Raiden defeated anywhere near 25.

It takes 20 seconds to charge that thing while you have to avoid RAY. Totally useless on Big Boss difficulty. The best way is actually to go nuts and spray RAY with the mini guns while charging him, then use melee attacks when he's stunned. Using the guns, then a 3 hit combo, then a special prompt hit while he's down is the safest, fastest and most efficient way of killing RAY.

Having played the entire series recently, the message in MGS2 has become more true than ever with modern social media. It's fucking scary.

By the way where's that image of the codec call between Rose and Raiden about how the music charts are made up to influence what's popular and then at the bottom it shows game reviews and 10/10 shit? I never found that codec call in the game.

That's different.

Anyway, you could also tell something just by random things he says to Raiden and how Radien doesn't respond because he's just thinking "What?" and then the converstion continues like it's trying to make you forget about it.

I'm talking about things like Cambell's mentions of the word "simulation" and the way he ignores Raiden when he asks what it means.

No one knew about social media back then because it didn't exist. No one knew about the oncoming financial collapse or the NSA spying despite all the evidence floating around. Hardly anyone's aware of all the manipulation that goes around us every day. You're vastly overestimating the public's awareness. And if they are aware, they don't care, like with the NSA.

The fun part was people thinking stopping SOPA would fix anything.

It's still very much in effect. Hell, the NSA is still spying on people as we speak. Snowden did people a favor and in return, he's painted a traitor.

It's a losing battle to fight short of a completely overthrow of the government, and even then there's no guarantee that what follows will be better.

>/pol/ pls go
>>
>>255553197
They mention In The Darkness of Shadow Moses in game, it was written by Nastasha from the first game. It's an interesting take on the events of the first game from the support's perspective.

There's a different recap story involving someone going to Shadow Moses himself after the incident to investigate and being held hostage there. He talked a lot about eating a lot peanut butter despite hating it. I don't know
>>

Nigga please, Darkness of Shadow Moses is literally previous operations refurbished as a book. Shocking Conspiracy is Silent Hill's level of spooky.

And Quinton Flynn did a shitty job too. The Japanese version of Raiden just sounded like a normal guy, so there's no excuse for the whiny Raiden we got.

Having said that, I think he did a good job at the over-the-top edgy Raiden we got in Rising.
>>
>>255553973
Basically, yes. He wanted an America that would basically be a militant state, which is the insane part of it.

The sad part is, I sympathize with both of those villains purely because online meme culture has largely been choking comedy. People don't tell jokes as much, preferring to make a reference to le epik maymay online. Referential pop culture humor is the worst and ages like shit. Look at old cartoons that use those gags from the 20s to the 50s and most fly over people's heads.

You still don't get it. Aside from the fact they needed a word that sounded like node, going with 'nerd' also establishes Raiden as someone acknowledged with the 'nerdy' things, like the video games he was trained with, nailing him as the player even more.

>>255553930
The translation is fine, I don't even know why people say it's not. The problem with the drowning line isn't even translation, just bad delivery, can't you tell the two apart?

>>
>>255554369
Flynn obviously changed because his perception of Raiden changed. If he went into MGS2 dialogue believing that Radien wasn't meant to a faggot, he would have sounded different.

Tha'ts half the argument. Raiden was supposed to be irritating. It was supposed to be a copy of 1. It was supposed to bore you with Rose. Almost every flaw is argued by the fans to be intentional, especially shit like that cock sucking delta head site.

But in the end it was just an overly pompous sequel to an 80's action movie clone that got too big for it's own boots.
>>
>>255556005

It's not the mask. As soon as Colonel says he's changing his codename to Raiden, his delivery changes completely. That's before he even takes off the mask.

>>
>>255556005
The only part that was awful on purpose was Raiden's personality earlier on, just because Kojima wanted to call you a pussy.
>>
>>255556005
It had a good plot because it reinforced its themes by having the story show you that it was literally scripted in itself. Normally, you just be like "Yeah yeah, illuminati and stuff." but after hearing it and then being shown just how easily you can actually be controlled makes you really think about it..

No. They don't check the area if you move the bodies of the other guards of the designated search pattern, either. The AI already knows it won't find anything, so it just makes the guards skip the search and leave.
>>
>>255556472
It was a method of storytelling that could only be done like this, not the story itself.

And I'm talking "popular", I'm talking what stands up to actual criticism. There's no reason to bring them up beyond insulting awful current games journalism, I wouldn't give those games much thought in terms of actually trying to figure out what's relevant.

I don't know what the fuck Flynn was getting at, but in the JP dub, Raiden always sounds almost exactly like Snake. I don't know why on earth they got him to voice act Raiden.
>>
I wonder if people who cite MGS as realistic portrayal of advancements in controlling people will still be called nut jobs now.
>>
>>255554546
He does fine as Axel and Lea in Kingdom Hearts, he isn't that bad.
>>
>>255557346
Yeah, probably. Or just people who need to be ready admit it wasn't the first thing to do it.

Reminds me of people who were just so shocked with what Black Swan or the Hunger Games did, and wouldn't shut up about it.
>>
>>255556807
The story and method is directly tied to the medium though. It's great. It's why I don't see the point in turning games into movies.

The closest approximation to film to approach something like what MGS2 did, that I can think of right now, is Gremlins 2. Brilliant sequel that shares a lot in common with MGS2 I think. It's a bonkers satire of sequels.

And I agree, those games shouldn't be considered "the bar" but alas, they are. Citizen Kane and all that.
>>
>>255557346
they will not be called nut jobs they will be called dweebs
>>
>>255557578
>Citizen Kane and all that.
Can we stop mentioning Citizen Kane when medium-exclusive technical aspects aren't the focus? I thought we would have been past it by now.
>>
>>255557831
That would be great.
>>
>>255557346
The AI stuff wasn't realistic, but the stuff about things already being done were totally believable. Stuff like mentioning that you never know if public polls and scientific reports are doctored, because you didn't personally ask all the people who are polled and you certainly aren't a scientist who worked on every released report. It is so very easy to lie to people about things that require serious effort to disprove. To say a ship didn't sink is easily disproved, but saying why it sunk is not.

One would argue that MGS4 is a meta-narrative about "nostalgia and fan-service", maybe even carelessness, but it's less obvious about it. And MGS2, with the message it's conveying, does it far better than 4.

It is funny how both MGS2 and MGS4 SEEM to have the same irregular ratio of gameplay and cutscenes/codec interruptions. I don't get that with MGS1, MGS3 and PW: both are proportioned rather well.
>>
>>255556529
>>255556005

This. If Kojima had never faked screenshots and PR shit with Snake in place of Raiden, and the game didn't keep making you doubt yourself with Vamp actually being immortal, or Plissken being Snake or not it wouldn't have the same effect and meaning.
>>
>>255558672
why should I watch this awkward, ugly man talk about what most of us are talking about here already
>>
>>255558778
MGS4's more obvious takeaway seems to be how much Kojima is fed up with game development and the industry. War has changed. War is routine. Snake is old and tired and wants to kill himself.

Peace Walker seems to be Kojima getting back to his mercenary against-the-world mindset. Gaming is his heaven and his hell. Outer Heaven.

Videogames have changed.

It's not about high scores, or gameplay.
It's not even about graphics, multiplayer, or innovation.

It's an endless series of micro transactions,
bought by children and manchildren.

Videogames, and its vast consumption of human time,
has become a rational, well-oiled business transaction.

Videogames have changed.

ID-tagged gamers carry ID-tagged consoles,
that use ID-tagged games.

Season-passes inside their games
enhance and regulate their experience.

Lending games control... Used games control...
Single player control... TV control.

Everything is monitored, and kept under control.

Videogames have changed.

The age of entertainment is now the age of control,
averting piracy from smart people.

And he who controls the activation codes, controls games.

Videogames have changed.

When the gaming is under total control,
DRM becomes routine.

I have this. It's wonderful.

I wish there was one for MGS1, MGS3, and the others. Shit, I wish more games had documentary-style DVD extras. I think only, what, Riddick, Portal 2, and Last of Us has that stuff?
>>
>>255560438

>>
>>255559598
All I would want to see are the scenes with Arsenal Gear crashing into New York and Raiden cutting down the flag over Solidus's body. The latter would have made for one of the most iconic scenes ever. Fuck 9/11
>>
>>255561118
So do I. I loved looking at all the facts not mentioned in the game, the non-used members of Dead cell, etc, etc.
>>
>>255561126
Nice and schmaltzy.

Rescue Emma is a great representation of the whole game imho. Melancholic, foreboding, cool, stealthy, with a cyber flavor.

>>255561227
Kojima said he'd never release the Arsenal Gear footage and gets nervous/embarrassed whenever it's brought up in interviews. As a diehard Westaboo I think it's understandable he felt he made a slip-up.

>>
>>255562770
the arsenal gear part. it just made the whole game go down to the level you don't even recognize it. a slap to the reality the game is in, but a the same time located in a nearly onirical environment. then it climaxes with the last fight on the federal hall.
>>
>>255562005
Fuck. I swear I read that in an interview but Google turns up zilch. Maybe it was a tweet Kojima made. Maybe my nanomachines made it all up and I'm a fraud stuck in a VR mission. Sorry about that.

You can find SOME footage of Arsenal Gear sitting pretty in Manhattan though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqrEKvOYzoo&feature=youtu.be&t=4m18s

From the Document of MGS2 disc.
>>
>>255563528

not the guy you replied to, but what made it interesting for me after the first time was the fact that locations and number of the bombs are different with the difficulty.
