So how do y'all think a wide-scale increase in internet speeds will affect gaming? More server-side computation? Supportable server sizes? An end to the excuse of lag? People out in the sticks without Fiber-level connections not being able to play shit at all?
>transferring more at once doesn't mean it actually transfers faster
>mfw I live in a country that's considered "poor" and I get unlimited 200MB for a normal price
Enjoying your shitty 5MB speeds USA or your Download caps, Australia?
My city has its own fiber optic service. It's fucking glorious. 100mbps for $55, I could get the Gig for $65, but I really don't see why I should, I'm already limited to what's already out there.
I don't really see a point in a 1 tb/s connection when sites generally don't give over a 5-10 gb/s.
>Live in bumfuck nowhere
>Paying $78/month for 4 down 1 up
>ISP too shitty to even do that with any stability
>tfw outages every few days
>tfw internet goes to shit-tier every hour or two
>tfw have to jump through hoops to talk to a real person
>a gig a fucking second
>$65 a month
Maybe some sort of movement prediction system. Shit I dunno. Maybe user-hosted shit will happen more.
I cannot believe the US government was ever suckered into giving those fucks exclusive access to any market.
Fiber will grow larger. It's only a matter of time and the economy. People WILL find uses for it.
Oh great the tinfoil is here.
Tell me about how Google is more evil than the current big providers, and how that could overshadow sanic download speeds.
Actual programmer here
for project hate machine, if you've heard of it.
Yeah, latency is a big deal. Server side prediction of player movements is also a big deal; higher bandwidth will ultimately lead to higher quality of online play; if programmers take advantage of it.
Compare a game like Monster Hunter to a game like Minecraft.
In Minecraft they have absolutely no prediction happening; which leads to players standing still on another person's screen in situations of extreme latency; meanwhile in a game like Monster Hunter, you will see the players still running in the direction they were going; and monsters still moving around (be it semi randomly; they are on the right track)
My point is that good programmers will take advantage of having more bandwidth available (and also less latency; as the overall infrastructure improves).
Internet in the US anywhere but the coasts or major cities is a joke.
There's often only one ISP out in the 'sticks,' and they throttle your bandwith to shit if you use more than a miniscule amount. We're paying probably $800/yr for this service.
The only ISP here is Hughes Net satellite, which not only has terrible speed, but I've never once seen ping lower than 700, so online games are out of the question too. Thankfully, I'm moving out in 2 weeks, as it's my parents house.
15 minutes from the second largest metropolitan area in the state, for what it's worth.
Monetization. You have the ability to download 500GB a second? Enjoy your 100GB limit per month.
This despite all of it becoming cheaper. Oh they'll offer you more but it's going to cost you. They already do this widespread in Europe.
Just because YOU won't take advantage of it, doesn't mean competent programmers won't. It's a difference between people that actually take pride in their work and people who will just shit out code a monkey could write.
Nig nog, it's going to be great
once we get more artists; we have way to many VAs and musicians.
Google fiber doesn't have a data cap. In a perfect world Google fiber will spread and through competition, it'll force shitty ISPs like Comcast and Time Warner to remove their data caps and up their speeds.
The internet world in the US will completely change when google fiber spreads. Sadly I don't see it becoming wide spread until 2050.
This is as fast as I can get in my area. The provider actually stopped signing up new customers here too because it's actually slower than their worst tier now. On the plus side though, whatever they use to monitor bandwidth usage just doesn't work. I've routinely gone over 1TB/month on a 150GB/month limit since November and I haven't heard a thing.
Video game streaming. It's only a matter of time when 0 latency leads to companies starting subscription based services where you choose what kind of specs you want, let's say based on subscription level, and you can play and store all of your games remotely without having to personally own a rig. Think of the amount of money they would make off of the crowds that want high end rigs but can't afford/don't know how to make them.
>+100% crit chance, active when health is lower than 33%
>+10% crit chance, active when health is at 100%
>Video game streaming.
The speeds won't matter if we still live in a data capped age. You can easily go over a 300GB month within 1-2 weeks if you stream HD movies/shows. Video game streaming will eat a lot more than that.
>150gb month limit
>stuck in a 10gb one
>yfw this is what end of net neutrality will do to all internet service as all ISPs conspire together bring it about.
Too bad it probably won't be reliable enough to actually deliver those speeds.
AT&T is one of the worst faggots when it comes to getting a consistently good connection to any of their services.
My speed is plenty right now. Verizon, at least their Fios department, will be bought out by Google in the near future, so I'm not really worried about it. And if they don't, than oh well, I've never had trouble with verizon ...
Oh sorry, this is the shitty, "we-totally-thought-about-it" design thread. My mistake, carry on.
Nigga I thought you all died. Good to see you're still on it.
>tfw no trustbusting president to break up ISP duopolies, and depending on where you live, monopolies
>tfw government that doesn't really understand how the internet works
Nigga, it's so pre-alpha of course it "looks" like garbage. Take a look at it in a few months after more art is finally finished. That has literally nothing to do with the topic, though.
Not necessarily true. That's a very pessimistic outlook on life, man. Just because it's a small project doesn't mean it won't go anywhere; and just because you have deadlines doesn't mean that you have to be a monkey programmer. Unless you're working at EA; then may your EA overlords have mercy on your soul.
>tfw I live in middle Tennesse, about 15 minutes east of Nashville
>Google Fiber is considering coming to the Nashville area next, Verizon Fios is already near there (pretty sure)
>tfw I live in a different county despite being so close so I can't get either of them
I'm really happy with the speeds but Comcasts 300GB cap can go fuck itself.
I'm renting a house near my unnamed university in the River Valley. I'll have Suddenlink, and it'll be mediocre, but a huge improvement over satellite bullshit. Plus, I'll be able to go on campus for all my big downloading needs.
There's no "kinda" about it. The worst part of it all is the pipe runs through my city just a few blocks from my house, but no one wants to do anything with it because
>why would we need faster Internet? That's a waste of money.
I love Verizon. I only had to replace my back up battery once in 3 years and I've never had any trouble with their modem/router, and I find it easy to configure as well. When my contract for my phone is up, I'm switching it over to Verizon from AT&T. I haven't really had trouble with AT&T, but I like Verizon so much, I might as well just give them the business.
Concept is just "2d side scrolling beat em up based on 3 angle blue's tan artstyle." It's not going to be "memes the game" or any garbage like that. It's going to be a huge throwback to the ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWA days of 4chan. Try to like video games, anon.
>It's going to be a huge throwback to the ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWA days of 4chan.
You probably weren't even here then, judging from the "PUNCH REDDIT, HEADBUTT REDDIT, FUCK REDDIT" that the WebM is showing as the content of the game.
Maybe devs will stop being so damn lazy and make packet upload rates higher than 10 or some shit. That's what causes all the annoying bullshit in Battlefield and CS:GO
>living in Austin and still waiting on Google Fiber
They said we were next...but of course Time Warner and all those cunts are trying to fuck it up by giving us marginally better speeds to distract us from realizing what Google is trying to give us.
>tfw sort of in the sticks (North West Massachusetts)
>tfw will never have internet that isn't shit and isn't Throttle Warner Cable
>don't want to move to the big city because like small city/town living
>at the same time hate the complete lack of employment opportunity here
I'm in a vicious circle. I can't get a good job, and I can't afford to move in order to get a good job.
>Reddit punching everywhere
>IT'S ONLY AN ALPHA
It's like, not even an alpha; and it's entirely off of the topic of the thread at hand. There are two characters that are sort of sprited out (test dummies); yes reddit is one of them. I also have webm's of /v/ beating on /v/, and redditbots beating on redditbots; what is your point?
>live in house in middle of forrest on my own
>had to pay loads just to get connected out in the middle of nowhere
>deliverymen miss my house entirely sometimes because the mist rolls in and the drive becomes impossible to see
>get all my food delivered to the front door
>sometimes go hungry because they cant find the house
They wont install any good shit here they said, but I dont want to move somewhere with lots of people
it will take at least 20 years before gig speeds are available in more than 50% of civilization. so gaming with other nations will still be shit.
Though once google fiber, and if these other isp's improve their speed and latency by getting faster processing network tech, it can improve gaming a lot for just playing within your city.
In a game like CoD where local players can host, if you ping 3-10ms within your town, it will be pretty much a LAN-like experience.
If Comcast throttles any further, it'll be longer than 20 years.
Current oligarchy-like state we're in is a living hell for progress. I wish it was a federal offense for groups to price fix like this.
I'm so used to fast cable that i can never go back to slower speeds.
The only people who will really see a noticeable gaming improvement from Google fiber or some other fiber solution are the people in areas who will not have it for another 50 years. The cable connection that you consider shitty (and they are, by almost every measure that isn't "better than dialup") is in most cases fine if you live near a population center, which are the areas that have any hope of ever seeing fiber.
Sure games could change to the point that they can take advantage of that, but it will take a serious event to change that, and the network will have to be in place, stable, and proven before anybody has the balls to throw their money down on it. And if they do the first few will be something shitty, like the Playstation 8 requires a fiber network because you don't actually buy games, they just stream everything to you as long as your account is active.
Yeah, we desperately need artists and animators. We've got a few right now; but this is a side project for everybody, so shit moves slow with so few people.
They do have relevance, though. Try reading up on a project before you start bashing it for shit you know nothing about.
I'm actually out of town right now, guessing those files (pretty old ones, only had them because /v/ was the only character done at the time) are on my main PC (using my laptop, just posting what I've got). I can assure you though, it does exist, hue. When I get home, I'll be sure to get a webm made of it, for my special little snowflake anon.
ausfag here. You literally have worse internet than the worst internet in the developed world
1) Classify ISPs as Title II Common carriers, giving FCC more oversight over their business practices.
2) Force ISPs to share their backbone network, allowing smaller upstart ISPs to come in and undercut the established ISPs (Think Straighttalk/Cricket/bargain cell carriers that borrow from AT&T and Verizon towers)
3) Break the franchise agreements that let ISPs have a legal monopoly over entire cities at states. This will allow more competition to prosper and aggressive price wars.
All it takes is the political willpower to change the status quo.
>tfw no providers where I live with good up speeds
at least Charter doesn't bitch about me pirating shit
DONT FALL FOR THE JEW TRAP
that kind of speed is BOUND to come with some sort of tiny backdoor to FUCK YOU IN THE ASS, specially since its JEWGLE we're talking about here.
ANON YOUR GAMES GAVE THE COMPUTER A VIRUS AND MADE THE INTERNET SLOW!
>all the speed in the world
>99% of servers are complete shit so you can never put your foot down
>latency will always be a problem
It's like buying a rocket car for city driving.
>live in Arizona
>only really have access to Cox (it lives up to its name)
>have a desktop pc on the other side of my room from router
>desktop is connected to a wireless ethernet transmitter, which is picked up by a reciever plugged into router
>lately have been getting abnormally high ping, 1mbs download speed, and 20mbs upload speed
what the fuck
So can you guys spouting nebulous bullshit about Google bring some actual accusations to the table? What did they do?
Or are you just talking shit.
>city-wide LAN for gaems
That might be crazy enough to work.
>the Bay Area server
>the Seattle Metro server
>the New York City server
question for ALL the people with internet speeds of 30mbps or more:
can you turn your router/modem off and on again and get a completely new IP, whenever you want?
>My point is that good programmers will take advantage of having more bandwidth available
You're preparing an excuse for excessive network usage.
If you require a frequent peak of more than 200 bytes per second per player, you are doing it horribly wrong.
>Can you avoid bans?
I have cable internet and yes i can change my IP address, but i have to go through this convoluted process that involves changing the MAC address of my router and restarting my modem.
>>can you avoid bans?
you've read right through my tomfoolery, i applaud you
>wireless as router
it's password locked, mom works from home so we have to use that specific router, it is a pretty nice router, if I directly plug my laptop into it and do a speedtest, i get like 70mbs download/upload speed.
Can't move my pc over because theres no area for it, and can't move router over because theres no wiring for it.
In that allowance, I'm accounting for sixteen 64-bit (!) vec4s/quaternions (and/or one or two matrices with rows or columns a multiple of that size), plus 72 bytes of miscellaneous player-specific data per second. That's loads.
>Just out of Little Rock here. Only choices here are ATT and Comcast.
That's how it works almost everywhere in the US. Even major cities generally have at most two options, one dsl and one cable.
you guys are fucking retarded, you can only send data so fast, it doesn't matter if you have 10 megabit or 10 gigabit your ping isn't going to change very much (if at all) because games take very little bandwidth to play.
your ping is way more dependant on your location and the routing to the server or hosts.
>change ip huh? I wonder what for.
If you have fios you have to log into the router release the ip, turn the router off and unplug it, unplug and take out the backup battery, and wait about a minute. That's how I do it.
I meant assuming that just because there's more bandwidth that people will get lazy and just waste it. Normally I'd agree, but it'd be pretty hard to waste networking bandwidth for an online game; unless you're just sending a shitload of garbage for no real reason.
well, i hired a 30mbps ISP the other day, and the router they gave me did not change IP upon being rebooted (it didn't have a button, so it was unplugging and plugging for me).
the ISP confirmed me they have dynamic IPs, but that they changed by themselves randomly (also, they give you a completely locked router that you can't configure).
even if i did get my own router i wouldn't be able to change IPs by turning it off and on, so i decided to keep my old 6mbps ISP that allows me to shitpost endlessly
or just do regular posts that happen to anus annihilate the janitor
That is so rad! Where is your kickstarter so I can back this!
>Live in Kansas
>Kansas City has fiber and other awesome data services
>Lawrence (where I'm at) doesn't have a damn thing like it despite being 30 miles away
>State government is actually trying to pass legislation to prevent fiber from ever spreading beyond KC
This state is retarded. Only options I have here are AT&T which is dodgy in service and Wow! (Formerly Knowlogy, and before that Sunflower), and they overcharge for just their minimum package.
At least it's not like Western Kansas. They have one ISP for any place beyond Salina.
Does anyone know where google fiber is headed next? I am a time warner cable technician who is mobile (not tied down with wife/kids) and would like to get the fuck out of time warner and follow the fiber.
>everyday Time Wanrer Cable's internet just shits bed the bed constantly every 2 minutes
>this keeps happening for hours, just on and off internet
>it gets worse if i try to play a game
>replace modem and router thinking it's on my end
Holy fuck what can be causing this bullshit
You guys are fucking spoiled.
I live in a place where internets are generally pretty fast, but I was stuck with 1mbs until 2010 when I could finally get my own internet. My dad was simply extremely stubborn about our home internet, anything better than dialup was good for him since he was stuck in the late 80s in computer technology - he'd only adopt something new if it was a brand new technology altogether (we got DVDs and digital cameras as early as 2000 in contrast to all that), he'd never let us upgrade anything.
>It's not going to be "memes the game"
I really fucking doubt that.
i always confuse the clear colored area as land and the darker colored area as Sea.
sometimes i wonder to myself HOW THE FUCK IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE SERVER IM TESTING MY SPEED WITH IS JUST FLOATING THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA
>this is how x looks like
I had a friend that always said this, and it bothered me a lot.
What it looks like. It is fucking what, not how. How exactly do you become a grown adult and not understand the interrogative words of your own fucking mother tongue?
WHAT THE FUUUUUCK IS WRONG WITH MY INTERNET /v/!!!! IT DOES THIS IS ALMOST EVERY FUCKING DAY FROM 4-12
Well you aren't going to be playing with the wavy shader 24/7
unless you're playing as /x/
They could be trying to get you to drop them.
See, ISPs get contracts from the government to provide internet to a certain area. These contracts stipulate they have to "do their best" to provide the people in that area that want internet with a reliable minimum speed. Now, it costs them more than they make to provide internet to certain areas, but they have to provide it because of their contract. To get you to drop them and "voluntarily" decide you don't want internet ("why the fuck am I paying for this garbage I'm gonna try satellite/dial-up because I am an average person and I don't need it for anything other than emails, shopping, and social media sites") they fuck over your connection to try to get you and your neighbors to drop so they can eventually shut down their service in non-profitable areas.
Alternatively their system could actually just be total garbage.
>Baaawww my daddy didn't buy the latest and greatest
Meanwhile everyone else in the thread lives in an area that doesn't even offer anything better. The ISP's even know it and charge out the ass for service that they may not even get all the time.
Try again in a few years kid.
internet itself wont get better till long long after everyone who was born before it was a thing is dead because they only see it as basically a glorified telephone alternative and the shit they use it for does not require more than a MB per second at the most
now considering that they make up over 95 percent of the people with the power to fix shit
hell even people that have had internet for all their lives think that it is just a glorified telephone alternative
Nah, it's inevitable eventually, since otherwise google will worm their way into every major city and still customers from everyone.
It's just a question of how long major ISPs will hold it off.
>3ms ping, almost a gig/s of down, half a gig/s of up
>my actual face when
god i hate my satellite bullshit
Fuck, I hope you're using "shit" ironically.
That's breddy gud.
>its impossible for more than one person to dislike something
I'm probably older than you, time passes and this board is full of people who literally had Halo as their first FPS.
I just sometimes see people going "WTF JUST 100MBPS MY INTERNET SUCKS"
>seriously being THIS butthurt and accusatory
This right here.
Fucking knuckle-dragger tech illiterates ruining fucking everything.
>I'm looking at you Windows 8
The best hope is to expose them to "hey your HD movies don't buffer anymore how cool is that!" but the ISPs keep it just fast enough in urban areas that the large percentage of people can't tell the difference.
It's like people who say "oh you don't NEED automatic rifles" and you're all "yhea but who the fuck NEEDS anything past a cave and some clean water and nuts and berries. I WANT this shit."
more data at the same time will allow check on more things per second so large scale pvp will run like small scale pvp now.
Impossible to tell how far away that server is from the computer that tested it but 3ms is a really good ping.
My cable is 20 mbs down at 10 ms anywhere in north america.
Fiber as shown there could transfer 36 times more information in 1/3 the time.
>businesses circumventing hamfisted/ignorant/compromised lawmakers in the pursuit of profit at the cost of the consumer's experience
That's been the norm since the Industrial Revolution at LEAST.
I get exaactly what I pay for, but if I had a better job, you'd be damn sure I'd be on 90. It's liveable though. Almost no downtime, and no bandwidth cap.
>Now more information can get to it's destination at the same time
>large scale pvp
Well yeah that will work well in MMO's.
Now when talking about ACTUAL games on the other hand...
>Planetside 2-scale battles become commonplace
Oh! Brave new world that hath such gaems in it.
>Gooble knows muh serches
So does every other ISP, and frankly Google has a decent not-being-evil track record so far, so I'm willing to trust them.
>chrome adblock works on youtube
>incognito mode actually works
>Google plus didn't catch, but they didn't cram it down user's throats
>still undisputedly best search engine
>browser at least second best
A little outside of West Memphis, AR here. Hughes Net can suck my dick, I miss multiplayer games.
I dont care how many dicks that game has sucked. No one, not even shitty indie projects, should take any opinion from /v/ seriously.
Don't give me that "constructive criticism" bullshit because /v/ is shit at critique, period. Either laugh at other shit opinions or jerk off to your own, but no one should take any of it seriously.
I'm just waiting for google expand to every state and watch the other ISPs panic. It's going to be a great show and you know it anon.
Because the ISPs have the money to pay off politicians and advertise, whereas the people don't have the organization to pool their resources and counter that, because we've been trained not to trust each other.
>hur bdur muh monopoly laws
>goobermint plz mek dose nerds plai fare here i fund campaign
>the people don't NEED all dat information they'll start thinking they're communists and want better roads and education and food
Just you fucking wait man.
I mean I hate to get all /pol/, but Google is going to have to bring some real political hustle to the table if they actually want this to go national, or global.
Once they have the market and the resources and the political go-ahead, obviously.
They're not a charity; they just are betting on superior quality winning over other ISPs customers as they expand.
This is the fastest I can get in my area, apparently Comcast also has the Business class package, but it's only in major cities. They straight up told me they couldn't give me a better internet package because I don't live in Houston downtown.
>my internet isn't even 1/16th of that
>at 17.56 Mbps
Guys let's be honest: Is Comcast screwing me? Because I'm gonna get Google Fiber soon.
Well, that's what I would say, if Google Fiber was in my area...
this is mine, not sure if its good or not.
sad thing is, not 5 mins away is Fios fiber shit.
i want that speed and it's so close.
>why did they buy time-warner?
Do you even need to ask?
>they put a datacap on my bandwidth
>no other isp in the area that can give me the same speeds, just shit like dsl
>they are literally tweaking their nipples right now as we speak.
Would you rather 100 mb but 10gb download cap, or 5 mb and no cap?
>actually searching for cantonese pizza
Do you go on /tv/? Tell the truth.
So my download in MBs is 1.5MBps? Odd because when I download steam games it can go up to 1.9MBps.
This is ONLY relevant to gaming in terms of theoretical DL speeds and Cloud gaming. That's it.
"Lag" will still fucking exist. Most "lag" is just the TIME it takes data to travel, an example being Australian players on NA servers having a 0.2-0.4 second delay between what they "see" and what the server "sees".
The only lag this may help prevent is that caused due to torrenting (because Google would crack down on piracy) while playing a video game or spikes cause by inconsistent ISP service (which isn't guaranteed).
Anon, the government is the one that does most of the spying and is the one that forces ISPs into doing it. Are you seriously not aware that a copy of ALL traffic through all ISPs in America gets sent to the NSA? I'm not even exaggerating. There are countless court cases involving this shit. The NSA does a lot of illegal shit, anon.
>tfw you will never get a lag free cross country connection
>Living far enough from Central Mass that your speeds are complete shit
>75 a month for this unlimited.
I fucking hate Canada so much.
downloading and torrenting ain't a problem
playing games is though
Your game look like fucking shit
>le row row fite da powah meme
It may shock you, but even people back then knew that shit was cancer.
Man, I don't even know what I would do with all this bandwidth.
I'm more than satisfied ith my 100Mb fiber. Here in huehueland that's insane. Even more so when I pay only some R$60, les than 30 dollars, i think
the posts in the background are live 4chan posts from various boards, displayed at random the engine has online, supports up to 4 players tons of custom written shaders everything hand drawn, each sprite will be at least 20-30fps per animation controller support for various devices it's not a flash game, anon
pre pre pre alpha we've got a lot of art done, I just haven't put it in the engine yet
I have no idea what the fascination is with Google Fiber either, I literally cannot see what the benefit is, maybe you want to download torrents faster? Isn't there some bottleneck? Can one stream 1080p movies?
I know there is the time argument but really, is time so precious that I can download a movie in 1 minute rather than 15 minute? I don't care anyway I just make popcorn and take a piss and my movie is done and I play it.
Its not really that cool.
>It's trivial that people don't teleport every two seconds to their next location
No, lacking that feature in almost every multiplayer game is gameplay breaking, especially if it's a competetive game, or a game where enemy locations are kept server side.
Nigga I only posted it to show that I'm somebody that has the experience to answer OPs questions, and only replying to people asking shit about it or posting outright misinfo. For example, there is zero evidence of "meme atrocities" being done in the game. You're the only one in the thread spazzing out over video games. Go play one, anon.
Connections in Orange County are shit. Lived in Fullerton for two years for school and was forced to use Time Warner Cable because they have a god damned monopoly on the whole fucking city.
I'm lucky to get 100KBs on a good day.
Mostly because my brother plays online on his Xbox every single fucking day 24Z and he eats it up until we run out and were left with basic the rest of the month. Then everyone comes to me and whines when our internet is so slow because I'm always on my computer.
Are you actually saying that better internet is bad? Anyway the speeds aren't the best part about this, the best part is giving Comcast someone to compete with so that they can't just keep fucking us in the ass.
Apparently we're paying Centurylink $80 a month for this shit.
Can't fucking wait, I hate my shitty Internet.
Fuck, we're paying $90 a month for THIS shit.
I'm sick of faggots like you pointing out how just because there's a facility that proves these kind of speeds are possible, that slow internet will be a thing of the past.
Network infrastructure has to be built to support these speeds which telecom companies have shown little interest unless they can find a way to nickel-and-dime you like crazy for it or offer it as a premium to their already broken services.
Technology does progress, but upgrading means spending money to make it happen.
>live in Appalachian Mountains

to do so we'd have to make time faster
I'm not gonna look at everyones scores, I'm just gonna assume I have worse internet than 96% of you.
>live on island
>too far away from office
>Internet will never get better.
>MIGHT be able to get ffaster wireless, but would never be able to play online games again.
I don't even know what to do.
Well time to go start a torrent and have it take 12 hours to finish.
Or maybe I'll go wait 15 minutes for one youtube video to play
Where the fuck do you faggots live that you have such SHIT fucking internet?
You don;t need Google Fiber to have something semi-decent. However, whatever you fucks have is just... Why? Do you live in a fucking trailer park?
Move to NY or someplace relevant. God damn.
>Also live on an island
>Have speeds so greater than yours, I can't even calculate it in my head. See: >>255399518
You're getting fucked. Call up your ISP or some shit. God damn. Do SOMETHING.
the comcast and time warner monopolies are pretty hilarious from a non-murrican perspective. once the merger goes through most of america will only have one choice of isp.
also this thing's still happening
download shit so roughly high 50 when not downloading anything.
honestly I am still really iffy about google because knowing them when it fully releases they will have bullshit caps that they will enforce like the biggest jews in the world. and if thats the case I will gladly stick with
comcast, while I know this isn't the case everywhere but they never enforce caps in my area where I go over 250 almost every other month for the past 10 years I've been with them.
But if thats not the case I'd gladly go to fiber.
One day it will get better.
just not any time soon.
Welcome to America, home of cheap gas and slow, expensive internet.
>Someone doesn't pay the comcast bill on time
>phone and tv stay one for weeks
>they shut off your internet in a heartbeat
They gave me this router/modem in one thing but I can only have 9 ports open at a time, fucking shit.
i think a big part of it is ISPs refusing to update their infrastructure thats probably from the 1980s
whereas google fiber, you are basically paying them to lay the fiber to your house
i hope that once google fiber becomes more and more prevalent, ISPs will see that its actually financially viable to upgrade their infrastructre to fiber
>this is how heaven looks like
doesnt anyone proof-read their maymays?
To all the people talking about their connection speeds, are you talking about your provider's speed (measured in bits) or your downloads (measured in bytes)
Because there is generally confusion among those two.
If you download shit at say 375KB/s average, then you're good. If it was 375kbps, then that's shit because that's practically ~44KB/s downloads.
only worth paying a lot for because i spend my entire life infront of a computer
GOAT australian upload speed coming through
don't even get close to that download in real life, can't stream 720 youtube : /
Dude, AT&T by me JUST started selling 1MB packages, and this shit has a data cap of 250GB a month. What planet do you live on? Even downtown Chicago is lucky to maybe get 5MB down.
Now don't trust me, but as I recall state governments usually are friendly with big internet providers. They give them exclusive rights to develop their infrastructure for specific areas, smooth out red tape, taxes, and squeeze out the competition in exchange for the ISP's shekels.
>government enforced monopoly
Well this is complete bullshit if I've ever seen it. Wonder how much Comcast is paying these cunts off.
It's bullshit because I've never seen a download come near that speed, and I do know the difference between megabits and megabytes. What I end up paying for is closer to 8 megabits than 30.
>live city center
>can't get fiber because they'll have to dig up the city to install the cables
>find this article
>fiber cables line the streets of my city
>dormant for over 10 years
>still no one using them
>10mbps fastest internet at best of times
Comcast isn't terrible, and you can tell they're really trying to get their shit together, but that's just because Google Fiber is coming to Atlanta in the next year, and they're gonna be fucked if they can't do some serious damage control before then.
that feel when you pay up the ass just to get this when I live in the US
