Alright /v/ what are some games that do aliens well?
I really liked the design of the mechtoids they were probably my favorite.
Do we have this fucking thread every night?
Is the dlc worth getting haven't gotten it, but loved the original game.
This thread has been started 7 times that i've seen in the last 2 hours and every time it's filled with tumblr meme faggotry, are we being raided or something? If so it's pretty weak sauce in terms of raids.
First doge and now this shit
What the fuck is up with /sp/ taking tumblr memes and spamming them on every other 4chan board?
>Thin men in Long War
just fucking kill me, nothing is worth this torture
I hated half-life aliens personally.
Not particularly the xen ones like the headcrabs, but the vortigons are pretty ugly, and the fat slug things are just terrible. I really wish combine were aliens instead of just humans in armor.
It improves a lot of the base functionality of the game, while adding tons of new content to make a new play through feel fresh.
The best part, in my opinion, is not the giant flamethrowing mechs, bio engineering, or the new mini-campaign against alien-worshiping fanatics.
Its a little button near the squad deployment screen that lets you clear all items in the inventories of people who are not selected to be on the mission. That shit saves so much time, and is so useful, I swear to god.
pic sort of related, the second best feature.
Yes, all the new features are nice, but even the creator has admitted that all he's done is implemented ideas. He hasn't even started balancing yet; which is frustrating when you can get game-ending events that are completely outside your control.
I'd hold out a few more months to play it.
The only answer.
Fuck, I was so blinded by female mec rape squad I never tried that. I'll give it try on my next playthrough.
It's funny, some levels are balanced, just beautifully. Perfectly fair, fun, and you get by on the skin of your teeth. While others have aliens rushing you in packs of 10's from the first turn and you're stuck hiding behind the nearest cover to spawn getting sniped by thin men. I never thought I'd find thin men as challenging as they could be before this shit.
Also the tech scaling is broken as shit, even with the "fix" to the latest alphas.
I can't help it when they spit poison onto all my squad members and then oneshot them from across the map while my soldiers are in full cover. It's just cruel. Meanwhile half my squad is panicked and the other half is suppressed and getting flanked while the rookies shit their pants and do nothing.
I've only just started it though, maybe it gets better.
That's just it though, don't get into the position that they get be halfway across the map shooting at you.
At least try to lure them into an ambush, if not just waiting for them to come to you.
To be honest it was a bad position. All the cover was concentrated in one area, so I was forced to bunch everyone up (which I knew was going to be total shit when one of them used the spit). Then they had 4 sectoids backing them up, so I couldn't move anyone to better cover because they'd be flanked by the sectoids. Not to mention one of the thin men was already on top of a tower, and rockets are now extremely inaccurate, so I couldn't take out 3 or 4 of them that were bunched together (the rocket flew too far and only got 2 sectoids). Then the thin men got a lucky crit on one of my soldiers, 2 of the rookies panicked and hunkered down, and it basically went downhill from there. Managed to get the rest out but most were heavily wounded.
>There will never be a survival horror game that really does explore the complete unknown of extraterrestrial life
Imagine how fucking crazy it would be to have aliens talking inside your head communicating with you telepathically, assuring you everything would be alright when they are really trying to hunt your ass down to do all sorts of experiments on you and shit.
Here, have your protected tits.
I like his tittyMEC but I wanna see him draw more asian tentacle rape-bait MEC
I just want more whatever. Don't care what form it comes in.
the designs are still pretty good but declassified had some pretty bad ai on both sides.
>Its a little button near the squad deployment screen that lets you clear all items in the inventories of people who are not selected to be on the mission. That shit saves so much time, and is so useful, I swear to god.
Thank fucking christ for that. Literally the best feature.
>aliens talking inside your head communicating with you telepathically, assuring you everything would be alright when they are really trying to hunt your ass down
fucking this, I would love a game to do something like that maybe make it so you have some sort of suppressant that you have to keep on taking to keep sane that way there is a sense of urgency and panic when reality starts breaking around you, yet you still have to keep up the pace while the alien is making you hear on the intercom one of your partners who you split up with leading you into a false sense of security.
those aren't combine you faggot. They're civil protection. The ONLY combine you see are the hunters, those massive tripod things and the advisors (the psychic blobs that kill eli)
Its just a shame. I remember the sense of wonder everyone had during and after the first game. This whole new universe to explore, it all seemed so awesome.
Why the fuck did they ruin that?
>not the glorious ethereals
I think its more because of bioware changing internally, and they changed the series with them.
How they fuck do you fuck up that bad?
How so? Noble warrior race, diminutive cannon fodder race, race of bestial brutes, a manipulative overseer race, etc? All fairly generic.
Although I love Hunters, design and lore-wise. Fun to fight and interesting.
What the actual fuck. Is that from the Long War mod?
>6 heavy run
>skips uber ehteral scene
>everything goes dark
>can only see life bars
>can't target anything, even with The Rift
that sucked. and my 6 heavy run was good to. At least it taught me that Mayhem is not one of those skills that sucks by default (like holo targeting or snap shot)
I remember I had two deaths there
One of them wasn't at the hands of the aliens
he was my main
>Playing long war
>cyberdisk month 2
>dead from overwatch before the faggot can do shit
>repeat mutiple times
>Aliens quit using it all together and start pumping these faggots out
I lol'd, I imagine the big alium looking at the sectoids and going "what if I just ducktape you to a robot"
>80 heatlh sectopod
are you serious
Anyone else notice when some people die you get huge increased chance to hit and get missed?
Very first mission I attempted on impossible, killed 4 aliens, 5 left all awoken, got one of my guy critted from half the map behind full elevated cover, second guy panicked, killed 3rd guy. Next turn sent last guy to get a visible position of the panicked fucker (I would have killed this guy myself) but then the alien killed him and I still don,t know how but as soon as I was with only one guy, everything went so smoothly, I flanked all 5 aliens, one shot me, for 3 fucking damage, and he had me flanked, my guy killed him in panic. Then the very last alien for some reason was hunked down, I figured, that's stupid, it means it has no vision of me if I sneak by to full cover outside of his LoS right? Nope, fucker saw apparently me, flanked me from 4 tiles and missed, then I killed it. Fuck this game giving me bullshit crits and then going easy, fuck it.
WHY IS THERE A SECTOPOD AS BIG AS A HOUSE
WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS
I have no idea if this is real. I don't know why someone would create it, though. Perhaps someone was just angry at God, maybe it was God who was angry.
Last I heard they didn't quite cancel it, but they were scrapping everything we've seen.
Which is awful, because what we've seen looked goddamn brilliant.
Like if Star Wars didn't go to shit.
>Remembering the last shitstorm of an alien thread
>X-COM: Alliance was cancelled and will never happen
I'm not even kidding.
The Combine are a very original and remarkably likely vision of what an intergalactic/interdimentional empire would look like.
Instead of being just one species invading places with maybe a handful of slave races serving as infantry cannon fodder, the Combine are a faceless, seemingly leaderless self-powering conquest machine. Incorporated species are biologically modified to create custom war machinery. It's quite possible nobody actually knows who the "origin" species of the Combine are, where their homeworld is or how did it all start. Everything in the Combine empire is geared towards optimization, and even the ones who are apparently in control (the Advisers) might just be the best administrative species the Combine encountered in the past, so just like everything else they were incorporated.
That's all hearsay. It's clear the Bethesda fucked them over a bit, but it may have just been to promote their new IP Dishonored. I wouldn't be surprised to see Prey 2 in basically the same form for next Gen systems some time within the next year. Again, Prey 1 went through a TON of redesigns and engines, so don't give up hope.
RIP, mate. ;_;
Realistically, what do you do here?
Like what can you even do here?
I'm assuming it's some mod, but even with a bunch of snipers placed or mechs, that's a metric shitton of health.
Does the mod somehow give you better weapons too? Because if not, then that's just nope.
Aliens are pretty rare in video games today.
You probably don't see them much at all.
Yeah, there haven't been many alien games.
Lets not forget Independence Day the game.
My personal favorite, I loved the jet fighter view.
Although it was my favorite, few ever played it.
Odd I know, I miss playing that pixelated trash.
While someone else mentioned disabling shot and plinking it to death, there is ALOT of new weapons and weapon tiers
Also the aliums have resources now, so no endless amount of bullshit of the same unit, sure you might see some beefier units(as seen) but they are few and far between.
For example,if you destoyed that thing expect a few months before they pull out another one, or if something else(i.e a cyberdisk) could ultimately stop production
Long War is basically a grand strat game against a AI thats people tier
Fuck that, get back to the Sky Ranger.
>the hunters, those massive tripod things and the advisors
Only the Advisors are really Combine. The rest are what's called "synth" creatures; machines made out of other species.
Hunters, Gunships, Dropships, Stalkers, Striders, and Combine soldiers (but not metrocops) all fall under this category.
I am thankful I did that storyline on Normal once (for the trophies) and never touched them again
the reward sucks and you get it really late too since part 2 doesn't happen until the base mission.
14 thin men that early on classic? FUCK NO
>aliens want to take over the earth
>surpised that their power is otherworldly
I think of long war as canon almost, considering how easy vanilla can be crushed though while now its a mind game grand strat with insane battles
Less shitposting and more xcom.
Moot should just have it either wordfilter to I'm a faggot or make it a 3-day automatic ban, then the mods can get back to doing whatever lazy shit they usually do instead of moderate /v/
I did it for the first time last night and it didn't seem too bad. Though part of that was the fact that my sniper kept making clutch shots on Thinmen, and as a result they never even managed to get a shot off on me.
>That Triad mission
>Get swamped by 4 thin men and 4 seekers on the first turn, and 2 more thin men at the second turn
>Getting hit once downs it for a week
>You have to ignore UFOs to make sure you have fighters to down scanners
I just started playing it this week and that's what I've noticed.
Where's a fucking A-10 when you need it?
If its a scout use avalanche, if its a fighter, destroyer or terror(good luck) ship use stingrays
Also aggressive air is 20+ to hit for BOTH parties
if you fly in, land first hit you can back out, send in another plane on balanced or defensive and congo line it to death if it hangs around long enough
Depends on the start, I usually get 6 planes, and then conga line 2-3 planes, and finish off with the fourth, however thats if i NEED to kill it, Im content with 1-2 going toe to toe if I think i can win
Stingray missiles should be in the hanger at the start, and for the weapons it basically comes down to this
>Assault Rifles= If a soldier has good enough aim, use this
>Carbines= Soldier has shit aim, or if the enemy has little armor back up and want more hits vs damage
>SMGs= If you want to flank alot to keep the aliums under pressure
>Battle Rifle= Soldier with REALLY high aim, or with scope+laser sight and firing from a static postion
Also, for snipers machine pistol is almost ALWAYS better than the pistol
Ah, an X-Com thread, I was gonna ask this before replaying with Enemy Within.
>Can you not progress the story and aliens won't advance either?
>Is it recommended to use explosives?
In regards to the explosives, I find that they do too little damage and that UFO parts are too valuable to let them go to waste.
>what's everyone freaking out about, that's just a normal size-
New aliens keep showing up regardless of what you do.
Use explosives everywhere.
>guaranteed accuracy and damage
>destroy cover to get a better shot
>weaken multiple units at once
Depends how much you care about mobility, snipers and infantry rarely need mobility(the latter do need it more than the former) so anyone with great mobility would benefit from it
This is perfect. It eliminates the issue where you both want to put your arms around each other and there's not space enough or they crisscross and you lay on them weird or have to just leave one flat against your belly or something.
I'm pretty tired.Put it up to rookie panic I guess.
oh wow, someone saved a picture I made
thatscool fooldya haylimo ayyyyyyyylmaaaaaaaaoooooooo
AREA 51 was surprisingly good. Fox Mulder did some nice narration, too.
Aliens aren't the main threat but they are pretty creepy when they pop up and you get to explore their shit.
I personally consider that game a very underrated game. It also had some really neat multiplayer that died way too quickly.
I came here to tell you it's alright, there are people who still care about SC2
So whatever happened to that faggot who was gonna do an LP of TFTD?
>Favorite thing in EU/EW is getting psionic ASAP and mindfraying thin men as revenge for early game
>Long war mod nerfs the damage to 1
I do like the concept of more weapons and classes though.
she'll be back to take em on in her nineties
Cowtits are an integral part of lolicon fantasy.
>tfw it lands in the skyranger at the start of a mission
I dont know but that LP that guy did here a while back was glorious.
I just want to thank the mods that are blowing the fuck out of these doge tier niggers itt, you are all doing gods work.
Area 51 was surprisingly good, I was recommended it in the last thread - Couldn't get it working on PC though.
a long time ago /x/ was debating what aliens would say when they first came to earth, and the agreed upon post was 'ayy lmao'
later on, tumblr took it to the next level and aggregated the fuck out of the joke, posting it whenever they saw an alien picture. without context.
Yep. Arms and legs get amputated to become a MEC trooper. XCOM is good enough to fit her with noncombat limbs when not in the suit, and they seem to be pretty functional, for what's that's worth.
>a picture I made
All you fucking did was use the text tool to make a shitty meme, how are you proud of that?
Yeah, what he said.
You can give your soldiers NANOMACHINES, SON and have them regenerate health, jump up buildings, turn FUCKING INVISIBLE or sense enemies through walls and all sorts of shit.
Not to mention the new enemies and missions being pretty cool.
Ur-quan are god tier villains.
Kohr-ah are literately ultra space Hitler and i still have mixed feelings about fighting them their back story is so flushed and well made
They're a lot of things. Sort of a cross between heavies and assaults. Good at close and midrange, but low ammo and not great aim. They vary a lot more than other classes in their abilities since you customize both the soldier as well as the MEC they drive, so you could have a grenade-lobbing MEC or a flamethrower MEC or a punchy punch melee MEC.
I think you'd be missing out on a lot of content and fun if you don't try them at least once, but the game is still playable if you don't. Like >>255134701 said, the gene mod alternative is also viable. Just less flashy early on, but actually probably stronger by endgame.
This is currently 6 bongs and 99 of the Queen's pence.
Is it worth it?
If you want base building and freedom, you'll be disappointed. If you're okay with it being a mission-based shooter, like XCOM, like shooters, and want to experience XCOM fights and wander the XCOM base at a much closer, more personal vantage point than the other games provide, its actually surprisingly good. I'm on the last level and I can safely say that some of the scenes and events in this game are legitimately good. Its just not traditional XCOM.
I still wouldn't pay a lot for it, but if you can get it for cheap, go for it.
So I've been told that after all the
>Honest guys, it isn't actually a prequel!
stuff, they use the new XCOM theme over the end credits or something. If this turns out to be true I'm going to be so goddamn mad
I haven't actually beaten it, so I can't speak for the credits. I remember that Enemy Within's new research techs reference vaguely The Bureau stuff. But, really, who cares if the games are related or not? A reference or two between them doesn't change anything.
I haven't bothered with long war yet, not sure i want to until it's been balanced.
This is more or less how every conversation I've had outside of /v/ about Long War has gone:
> WOW LONG WAR MOD WOW
> THEY ADDED SO MUCH STUFF
> LOOK AT ALL THESE NEW ITEMS AND SO MANY CLASSES AND CUSTOMIZATION IT ADDS SO MUCH
> WOW I CAN'T GO BACK TO VANILLA AFTER THIS IS THERE SO MUCH STUFF HERE
> hahaha oh man I fought 15 aliens with 6 guys and 3 died, man this is classic XCOM heck yeah
> oh geez another 25 aliens and this time 4 dead the struggle is real
> okay my entire squad wiped
> four more rookies dead
> and wiped again
> i dont want to play this anymore
Psionics and MECs turn Crystal Queens into a big baby. Fire makes the big guys panic still. Theyre big, but hardly buffed except for their health, speed, and damage.
The first time i encountered it I wiped it out with its babies in one turn.
Giant Sectopods are nothing to joke about. I had to do a mission with 2 of them
Playing long war right now. And I'm halfway through the second month.
It's not that much harder than vanilla, but that might be because I play on normal with saving enabled.
Or is it supposed to get a lot harder later on?
I've never been able to tear myself away from MECs, but I only did two games in EW - a classic and an impossible.
I want to try ignoring MECs and going full gene mods. Start in south america to make autopsies free and just gene the hell out of my squad. I wonder how it would affect the early and midgame to have soldiers regularly out for 3 days, but getting progressively stronger without even leveling up.
Full mech is so safe though, making genes a hard sell.
I'm not sure. They bitch about Outsiders. Maybe they just suck at XCOM tactics in general.
I feel the same way. It's cool that they're enjoying it, but so much seems so whack that I don't think its for me, and they need to knock that shit off where they criticize me for "only" playing vanilla. Say whatever you want, man; at least I manage to finish my games instead of despairquitting
