I think Shrine of Storms has the best aesthetics of the whole series so far. Gotta respect people when they say Latria or the swamp but the shrine strikes a nice balance between comfy and intimidating.

Honestly, the combat just isn't as good, it's much floatier. However, there's not as much focus on enemy interaction as there is in DaS, it's more about environment interaction. DeS also has some great boss fights compared to DaS.

Hardest of the 3. World Tendency weapons and PURE FUCKING BLADESTONE are a pain. I still did it and it was fun. Pure Bladestone took me 11 fucking hours of grinding to find though.
DeS fanbase became insecure because Sony fucked up and From Software made Dark Souls Multiplat. Since DeS was the only good reason to own a PS3 a lot of you felt insecure and had the need to shitpost all souls games going forward.

Pretty much. Always suicide in the nexus and keep track of all tendency related events so you dont miss anything. Also make sure to get the correct ending because 1 of the endings gives the soul required for the final spell.
Demon had best NPC. Sure, Dark had Solaire and Onion and Dark 2 had Gavlan Wheel Gavlan Deal, but Stockpile Thomas is the best.
I'm not the guy you were talking to but you can definitely tell you weren't here for the early threads. I'm not justifying the behaviour of DeS fans now as I think you're right that it all too often turns into petty arguments but the problem definitely happened when the series expanded to casual xbots and only got worse with the PC release.
The people who played and talked about Demon's Souls back then did it because they loved it not because they were bandwagoning on a social phenomenon. The conversation was much more friendly/intelligent and the OC was amazing.

DaS threads were civil too. Things went to shit when people began arguing about which games were best and when people began calling both or one of the games shit. Don't fucking dare try to blame of the games for this.
DaS threads were good in the beginning when everybody was still trying to figure out what to do where. Questions from new players were answered nicely and calmly.
But the game got more popular, the community bigger which meant more idiots joined in. Now the Wikis were full with tips and strategies how to beat bosses/areas so that fucking "get good" meme came to life and you could just forget any discussion about the game. I hate those people.
The Souls series just got too popular, and has long since attracted the people on /v/ who only come here to shitpost at everything, and the people who parrot everything they do.

The only hard part was first fight with Allant and trying not to fall at the 4-2 bosses. DeS was easy as fuck, I had a shitton of spare bodies by the time I finieshed it.

The community is beyond shit now. Everyone gets so violently angry about every goddamn aspect of Dks2. It's embarrassing. Every LP I've even watched of the game contains at least a 10 minute section of the LPer bitching about how much better they thought Dks1 was. I just enjoy the game, man. Apparently that makes me "wrong" and "stupid" because I don't blame my deaths on the game. I wanted to be a part of the community, but there's no room in such a violent community for someone who enjoys 2.

Is Demon's Souls extremely easy or does it just seem like that to me because I played hundreds of hours of DaS first? The only boss I took more than two tries on was Flamelurker, I was getting destroyed but I came back later and beat him with the crescent falchion straight away. I died once to Allant because he was the seventh boss I fought and I was too low vit to take a soulsucking, and I died once against Garl because he was hiding in the swamp where you can't move and instantly get the plague. Everything else was done first time. I used fluted armor and a knight sword which was at +7 when I finished, took 14.5 hours. I just felt disappointed that I got through it so easily, considering so many people claim that Dark Souls is a casualised version of its gameplay.
It's a game full of secrets and interpretive lore which is fun discussing. That and every player has fun moments to share.
It's also fun to discuss opinions with people like you would with any film/video game/music ya dingus

Sure Dark Souls is flawed, but it was fun. Maybe I was expecting more, or maybe I'm burnt out since 2009, but Dark Souls 2 was pure boredom. It's the first time during a first playthrough I've put down the controller out of boredom.

The were not hard and Last Giant was a nice starting challenge.

The only challenge from DaS is un-casualising yourself from most of the AA handholding you've gotten used to, and while it's never hard it's just not baby-tier forgiving like most games. All the Souls games play very similar, so being good at one means you're good at all of them.

Dark Souls is really a carbon copy of Demon's Souls in a lot of regards, but they throw in a whole bunch more cheap stuff and padded out the length more. I love both games equally, but if you made it through Dark Souls a bunch it should be no problem for anyone.
Hell, most of the shit from DeS that got people, like the dragon on the bridge, the Maneaters, Flamelurker, etc. was reused in DaS, so if you're going back to it it wouldn't be a surprise to you.

I really like the areas in DeS. How each world feels like you're exploring deeper into the same place. I also really like the unified world of Dark Souls, where everything fits together and you're pleasantly surprised to see you're not so far from where you began.
It's kind of baffling that Dark Souls 2 combined the two styles in all the wrong ways.

Demon's Souls wasn't 'hard' (an example of hard, imo, is the Mega Man games, but that's because I'm not too great at them). It was however challenging.
Flamelurker and Allant had me on my toes the whole time, it was one of those fights where one fuck up on your timing and reactions could kill you.
Honestly the portion of the fanbase and screams that the game is easy as piss and everyone who found any aspect whatsoever of it is pure dogshit is probably the worst part. And hilariously they're also the people who scream 'artificial difficulty' when they die or genuinely do find something difficult.

There is one change I really didn't like between DeS and DaS and that was the shitty loading screens.
Each time you loaded in DeS you had these intro cards to the characters you would meet, regardless of when it was. Made it feel like they all had some real weight and merit to them.
I love poise, but I hate how they took out the momentum for big weapons also.
Like, if you're using any weapon that weighs more than ten pounds, once you start your swing it should keep going. But after they introduced poise it turned to "I'm swinging my giant weapon! Oh no, I've been nicked in the elbow. Better recoil in pain! Stop moving, giant weapon, for I have barely been hit."

I also bought a PS3 to play this game. It was superior to Dark Souls in every way, and the bossfights were simply better. DaS did a good job adding onto the combat with lunge attacks and jumping, but for some reason decided to do away with a mechanic as simple as being able to climb chest high walls.
Try not having shit taste and then playing the game again.

I can do Dragon God in 5 minutes flat. You can one shot the broken pillars easily, either by having pwwt and picking up the dragon bone crusher or whatever it's called, or simply 2handing a large weapon like a bastard sword, you don't even need the stats to wield it properly.
I'm just saying, you've got a boss that tries to punch your shit, and huge-ass columns that separate you. You can actually look at the area and figure out what you need to do. They're both very much puzzle fights with simple solutions, but the BoC is such a design clusterfuck everyone just bolts their way through because there's no way they could know how it was actually designed to be done.

As it's own game DaS2 would've been fine, but it committed a major sin by being an awful sequel to a good game. That's the reason so many people complain about it, because it wasn't just mediocre, it was also a massive disappointment to people who thought they'd enjoy it as much as they enjoy DeS and DaS.

DeS and DaS are flawed masterpieces. With more time for design, and a larger budget they would be games that would be remembered forever. As it stands know, many remember and know of them, but its more of a cult following and marketing ploy.

No, it's so that the Old One tries to make you into its' officer. Killing true Allant is only the last step to that because he resides inside the old one. And you get his attention as soon you kill his doppleganger and the game goes on if you didn't kill all the other bosses.

The old Demons Souls threads were amazing, especially before guides were made and everyone was trying figure the game out. When people tried baiting out the community with "muh artifical diffucultly" or "Game is easy" they were either ignored or got told to fuck off.
After Dark Souls released, everyone stopped talking about Demons Soul's and talked about DaS. After the dust had settled, people tried to talk about DeS again, but due to the massive fanbase increase of Dark Souls, shit posting was inevitable and now we can't have a decent thread, this thread is proof enough.
I'm glad the souls games are popular, I just wish the community didn't go to shit.

Yes, and that one is Dragon God. BoC takes much longer because of all the backtracking, not to mention the hoping and praying you have to do that one of the constant sweeping attacks doesn't knock you into a hole, or that your jump is timed and positioned so that you land dead center on the vine or that you're not knocked off mid jump.
There is no such element of luck in the Dragon God fight. You can get through the entire fight without the Dragon God attacking once.
At this point I'm beginning to think you've never played DeS and are just shitposting.
Maybe you guys were expecting too much, then. I'm happy they didn't release a carbon copy of DeS or DaS1, but with updated graphics like everyone wanted. I'm happy they tried new things. They're experimenting in trying to make the series better as a whole. Even if you didn't like DaS2, it's still one step closer to that Souls masterpiece that we're all waiting for, just give From more time to work out what makes the series good or bad, and pray that Kadokawa doesn't fuck it up.

I've been a fan of From Software inscr about 2005, and that made me lose all, and I mean all respect I had for them.
Playing through it now. Some of the bosses can be cheap at times, like the Maneaters, or that boss at the end of 2-2 who goes berserk at low health and doesn't give you a chance to get away.
The levels themselves are godlike, though. It oozes atmosphere. When a lot of enemies are after you, you truly feel set-upon, but no fight is ever hopeless.
i was wondering if its worth to buy a ps3 just to play demon souls since i enjoyed dark souls and wanted to try the first one in the franchise also is it availebel in ps store since my local game(stop) dont have it

The 1-2 boss, after you kill the archers you attack his feat, eventually he falls over and you can hit the head for good damage.
In World 2 you have to use piecing weapons against the miners, slashing weapons have little effect.
World 5 is the last area you want to try, after you complete world 1-2, try world 2 when you get a piercing weapon.
World 3 and 4 are the next places to go.

that's bullshit, your argument is flawed as fuck. The only way you can get DG to not attack at ALL is knowing exactly how to do the fight. If you go into the fight with the same amount of experience you can do BoC way faster, especially if you have magic shield, which renders all of his attacks useless. and you don't even have to jump onto the tree you can just walk up to it and fall onto it. It's way faster.
Granted the bonfire is way too far away, but if you know what youre doing it's not a problem, just like if you know what youre doing the DG isn't a problem.

OK, thanks you guys. I won't stay in the thread any longer because I don't want to get too much help. I've beaten DaS and DaS2 and am really enjoying DeS so far from what I've played. I was playing 1-2 during the middle of the knight, and hiding from a dragon shooting flames everywhere had me really immersed in the game.
I don't really see how game design can be better, when mechanics is the games are always at odds with one another. PvP isn't better because from killed it to prevent thinking. The areas are more straight forward, more bonfires are available, and some decisions are just stupid (a wall seperating the player in iron keep to belfry).
Dark souls 2 was a huge step down. Only things it does better are the vast selection of weapons and armor, but because magic is essentially required for PvP and their is always a "best" weapon, its only better from a fashion standpoint.
I don't know then, Darks Souls wasn't hard, the only hard boss fight was O&S, the rest were piss easy and you had many Vanguard clones you had to fight.
Also the bonfire system made the game way less frustrating, you always got healing items when you died, you never needed more then 5 flasks before you ran into another bonfire and never needed more then 10 to complete an entire area and defeat the boss.
Not counting Poise made defense sets viable, the only defensive set in Demons Souls was the blessed sets, and they were more recover hp oriented then actually blocking hits oriented.

It's a good idea to clear the first level of each world before starting the second tier, except 1-2 since it's piss easy. Helps keep the difficulty curve interesting.

I never ever had to worry about healing in DeS because I died in 1-4 a bunch of times and collected a metric fuckton of best grass in the process. So I was always at full HP and healing in DeS takes miliseconds compared to chugging Estus.
The only problem I ever had in DeS after figuring out that my armor is bloody useless was False King Allant, it was the only boss that made me lose Stones of E. Eyes and I had to fight him in soul form.
Bonfire system I can't argue against, but if you don't count shortcuts I am pretty positive that any bonfire<->bonfire path is longer than most DeS stages.
I'm actually talking about this. A lot of people don't realize that if you stand by these trees along the route, you will not take damage. That's why the ground never breaks out around them, they were meant to be a safe spot just like the Dragon God. Her swipes will literally go through your body and the tree, completely missing you, even if you're standing on the wrong side. The whole fight was designed to be just like the Dragon God. Run to a column, hide, watch where the ground falls out, run to the next between her attacks. Her design has no way to illustrate that to the player though. The room's safe spots make no sense visually, and it was probably unfixable without redesigning the boss completely, so we ended up with the compromise we have now.
I'm not saying the boss is hard, I'm just saying it was originally a puzzle fight like the Dragon God but they could never figure out a way to convey it to the player.

Their physical bodies were twisted and distorted into demonic entities while their souls remained to guard the pathway leading to the False King.
Stonefang Tunnel was an excavation site under the control of King Allant. The miners who devoted their lives to the soldiers of Boletaria remained stubborn in their fruitless efforts to support the king, and rather than attempt to flee when the fog approached, they remained behind. Now devoid of sentience and soul, they mindlessly continue to chisel away at the tunnels. The caves create a maze-like system beneath the excavation ground worthy of its name “The Tunnel City.” Rumors of the tunnels sitting on the shrine of an ancient dragon are abound; the ancestors of the excavators were said to have worshipped and revered the dragon as a god. At its core sits a temple devoted to a fire demon whose flames are said to be the very essence from which blacksmithing was begun.
It still baffles me that people honestly, truly believe that DAS2 is the worst game ever. It certainly isn't the worst game From has put out. People treat them as messiah's but they've put out more stinkers than they have gems. Dark Souls 2 had better online, a better engine, better gameplay, and better menus and general quality-of-life and replayability. The ONLY issue it has is that its lore is kind of shit.

I never used those safe spots, even on my first playthrough because the obvious thing to most people (i think) is to follow the floor root there since the floor to the right is falling away. I just liked how you could clearly see BoC attacks so you could respond by dodging, blocking etc. with DG the camera was ridiculous and all his attacks were basically unblockable (i don't know if it's possible to block his fist smash, i always just got wrecked by it).

Suspended from the middle of the tower is a large, mechanical heart, constructed in an effort to help maintain the old man’s own existence. The souls of the damned inside of the prison are used as life-giving sustenance to keep the heart beating. In time, the old man’s body began to whither and decay, and the golden garb - the true source of the old man’s demonic rage - beckoned a new host. With the old man rid of the robe’s life-force, he breathed his last gasp of air.

Having a shit ton of grass was only useful in pvp, you shouldn't need that much to complete a area. The grass system only gets broken when you are able to buy full moon grass from Patches(assuming you keep him alive), which that is near the endgame when you can purchase it from him.
Demons Souls had few tough boss fights, but it in my honest opinion it had the most interesting.

The effort was for naught, and the Archstone connecting to this land was later destroyed as a last-ditch attempt to contain the chaos. It did not succeed.

Demon's Souls on the whole had the better boss music in my opinion, it was really refreshing to play it after DaS and DaS2 and not having to listen to people chanting every time except for 1 or 2 bosses where it actually fit.

No big deal, as I said, I just feel the absolute opposite. It may just be the fact that DaS didn't pull any punches because devs didn't have to worry "Gee, what if someone goes there in soul form and has only 1/2 HP?" all the time. That's at least the feeling I got.

It was the world where the Old One first physically invaded, after spreading the word, the people of the 6th arch stone destroyed the arch stone to slow the Old One's madness from spreading.

Unfortunately, the bosses were too damn easy and build balance was abysmal. The community was hardly better, either. Especially with bullshit like Scraping Spear and the like.

You walk through them very quickly in DeS, but in DaS it leaves you to get back stabbed by enemies and players easily.

I picked up Dark Souls on sale in January thinking that I had put it off for long enough, I love the game but no one wants to talk about it anymore.
Getting 5 - 10 free flasks also didn't hurt when you needed healing. Not counting in Demons Souls when you died you only had half health, decreasing the effectiveness of healing item. You also had the humanity that could be farmed from rats that full healed you. Then you had armor that actually did things, you shouldn't be dieing a lot in Dark Souls.
I'm not the one who brought up the whole "bonfire placement was longer then the entire levels of demons souls" argument.
Yes I did, a few years back. Most of Boletaria's backstory is fleshed out thanks to Ostrava, Latria gets bits here and there, especially the story about Old Monk and his robe, VoD is pretty simple and told you upfront. Everything else I never encountered.

In Demon's Souls, they were basically there for suspense. You never knew if a boss was behind it, or if it would be just more of the level. There are a ton of pretty useless fog gates in the game. With Dark Souls, they went to pretty much just using them for gating bosses, and since getting to the boss kicks out invaders, it was probably decided that it was more balanced to actually give enemies/players the opportunity to knock you out of it.

But the fog walls with a boss behind them were a slightly different colour to the ones without, they were grey whereas the ones that didn't had a slight greenish tinge to them.

DaS2 is not just a "disappointment" or "failed to live up to it's predecessors", it's actually a fucking horrible game. The director took a bunch of stuff out of the previous games but had no idea whatsoever about how to implement them. In Dark Souls the final areas were shit but it was still bearable to play because the core mechanics are so near-perfect, in Dark Souls 2 it's basically the opposite. Even if it had the most beautifully designed stages and encounters ever, it would still be fucking shit to play because of its disgusting gameplay.
They took poise from DaS but have absolutely no idea how it actually works, meaning you end up being somewhere between DeS and DaS where you ALWAYS get staggered by enemy's attacks, whereas only some of your attacks will break enemy poise based on what the game feels like at the time. At least in DeS you know that every attack is going to stagger anything it hits.
The enemies being able to rotate on the spot means that they are always guaranteed to hit the spot you're standing in, and because blocking, rolling, and parrying are all nerfed it means you have less tools to deal with it, a design decision that was made for the sake of killing the player more often to make the game seem "harder", the infinite enemy stamina also plays into this.
Then you have weapon degradation, in the previous games you would have to play for several hours straight to get your weapon at risk, in DaS2 it takes about 25 hits to break your weapon completely. This is just to force you to take breaks between exploration so you can rest and reset the enemies in the area, again just to make the game "harder".
In the previous games you had two or three different types of roll which had different amounts of i-frames, meaning you had to choose between defence or being invincible during your roll. Because DaS2 lets you weigh anywhere up to 70% without any negatives, there's no reason not to wear armor. But there's also no working poise, so there's no real reason to wear armor either. In other words, armor is COMPLETELY cosmetic with no downsides to either wearing it or not wearing it (assuming you stay under 70% weight).

Deprived starts you off at level 1 with 6 stats in every category.
A knight on the other hand, will start you off at around level 10, with the proper stats a knight would have.
Basically, you'd have 9 more points in different areas than deprived.
Deprived is just a caveman and it's a way to make you think you're in control, when you're not.

Demons souls is a boring unfinished, uninspired kings field derivative with a less imaginative director who didn't really know what he was doing.
Dark souls 2 was somewhat more realised and interesting, but still lacked focus and was generally uninteresting due to a huge rushed schedule.
Dark souls 2 is a polished, quality game that bought back core values of what makes games like this truly special, and I for one congratulate the team and Naotoshi Zin on accomplishing that.
In all of the games, rings were a way of drastically changing how your character plays. In DeS you had one slot in soul form and two in body, in DaS you had two, and in DaS2 you get three. Three slots is too many in my opinion but that's subjective. The fact that many of the rings in DaS have enhanced versions means that rings just end up being character upgrades instead of game-changing modifications to your playstyle, and the way that many of the rings are highly situational, such as only being useful when trying to connect to a specific person online, means you just swap them whenever you need them instead of making them part of your build. In DeS there was still stuff like the fire resistance ring that works in a similar way, but DaS2 takes it way overboard. Overall DaS did this best.
Yet another thing that DaS2 fucks up is the "agility" stat, where you are essentially forced to put a significant number of levels into attunement or adaptability so that you can get back the i-frames that you SHOULD get from light-rolling. In other words the game intentionally nerfs your abilities from the start and makes you waste your time getting them back up to scratch. This was implemented to replace useless stats like resistance, but they should have either gone back to "luck" or just got rid of it altogether. It's a waste of time.

Shrine of Storms is the best by far. I loved going there for the first time and getting completely wrecked by the first skeleton, it really made it all the more satisfying once you figured out a good tactic to deal with them.

A role playing aspect with your character makes your character more human, and seems a lot more controlled than making a "perfect" build only for pvp.
Why don't you just make your own character fixing the world in their own way instead of looking up guides that other players have created?

Please notice that I didn't say anything about graphics, level design, boss design, multiplayer, the people that worked on it, or anything else. I only mentioned aspects of the core gameplay, something that anyone who has played the games should be able to objectively refute if they have an actual point to make other than "please stop bullying me, I bought Dark Souls 2 as my first game because it makes me more hardcore than the other kids on the playground".

Why would making a SL1 character mean I use guides? Not everyone is as bad as you, mostly anyone who PVEs or PVPs will pick deprived because most of the time there a points in things that they don't want so SL1 is the best for a clean slate. That 9 points can be the difference from a 120 build, or a 129 build.

I had a shield and winged spear, so I just took the first roll with my shield up and R1'd to interrupt every attack they attempted while keeping my shield up just in case.
I was pumping endurance and dexterity, though, so I usually didn't have to worry about running out of stamina before they died. Other than that, it's just a matter of knowing where they are so you don't accidentally aggro more than one at a time.

I like Demon's Souls the best because it is more similar to King's Field and Shadow Tower. Dark Souls was great too, although I was disappointed in how the setting and such felt more like generic fantasy. Dark Souls 2 was meh, the only really nice positives in my mind were some of the items like the vanquisher's seal.
I also used a winged spear.
The best way I found against the skeletons was to use a spiked mace.
Seriously, get a spiked mace and upgrade it. I was fucking wrecking those silver skeletons on the ledge after the grim reaper.

I got the sense after beating DaS1 that I had just completed a long and memorable journey, while DaS2 just felt like another game I had beaten. I'm not sure why.
Demon's Souls gave me a similar feeling despite being much shorter.
Dark souls 2 is the best in the series though anon, the designers were the most experienced in the fantasy setting and the lead designer integrated kings field influences incredibly well.

The serpents are conjoined into one being, in the dark ending all of the serpents honor you as their king. If you light the fire they get to dick around under gywndolin for the next cycle.
I'm not talking about how they were perceived, just how they were designed. Ninja Gaiden was designed to be hard, Demon's and Dark (for the most part) weren't.
My favorite part about dark and demon's souls is that the area you explored felt like only a smaller portion of the world and I was always thinking "if only this gate could be opened and then I could explore the rest of this area" and I never once got that feeling in dark souls 2
