Not really. The things called dragons/elder dragons are basically legendary pokemon. Extremely rare/mythical [Chameleos, Kirin, Fatalis], can cause natural distaters and/or control the elements [Amatsu, Alatreon, Kushala], or is just too big or too strange to be classed as anything else. [Yama, Jhen, Lao-Shan]

Almost everything else is a wyvern but the classification for that are pretty broad. We have fucking wolves that are classed as wyverns, it's kinda silly.

While its still plenty of cherrypicking, this image does point out why I find the covers of most western games to be rather boring. There's only so many times I can see a grim faced, 'gritty' short haired/bald man holding a gun and just think the game is going to be the same.

But I understand some people think the same of Japanese games. Even though I would argue there is a lot more variety. From Dragon Quest to Dead or Alive to Dark Souls to No More Heroes. They clearly have a huge range of styles. Even if I don't like them all.

It is true that the quality of life and society in Japan is declining though. Someone once pointed out that the reason moeshit and waifuism is so popular is because there's no time or benefit with settling down and having a family, so media creators have developed a way to basically package all the positive qualities of people and market them. Hence the popularity of fantastical, idealized characters rather than gritty realistic ones. There's a good chance I am full of shit cause this was from someone on /v/ who claimed to live in Japan for a few years.

Teaching is now one of the lowest-paying foreigner jobs in Japan, a far cry from the past when it was a legit good living. There's the occasional lucky break, but most JTA's are scraping by in the larger cities.

This one is actually good, say what you will about Japanese games but they're much more original and varied in setting and character design then Western games are. I mean in the west you have the choice between realistic gritty guy shooting in space, realistic gritty guy shooting in the military or realistic gritty guy fighting in midevil fantasy world which is basically indistinguishable from Lord of the Rings. Westerners aren't just *bad* at character design they actually just flat *don't* have character design at all most of the time, they scan an actors face into a computer and call it a day, this carries over into setting alot of times too, just completely unoriginal copy-paste high fantasy world with the same established fantasy races everytime, have no idea why westerners are so unimaginitive or seem to not appreciate appealing character design in the slightest.

As for setting, most of those games had drastically different settings, just look at Too Human. Even though it sucked, it actually had a pretty good setting, which is why it was a disappointment.
Japanese game fall flat on their faces any time they try to bring about a dramatic moment, because the characters and settings are so over the top that I can't take them seriously anymore, even when the story is set up to be serious.
