I got accepted into a prestige Uni for engineering, but I always wanted to pursue a career in video game designing. I'm stuck, and I'd be going to a 2nd rate Uni for game design as well. Anyone on here with experience making games, coding or anything related to a career in the industry?

TDLR Got once in life time opportunity into good Eng Uni, but dream of going into gaming instead. What should I do /v/?
>>
Just do computer science. You'll learn the majority of stuff you need to know for game design.
That bait image though. CS shouldn't be put next to kinesiology.
>>
>>253836129
Go to University
Design games on the side/free time
>>
I've heard from a ton of different sources, including video game designers, that going to school for game design is a complete waste of time.
>>
Making games sucks shit

You're told what to do, spend a week figuring out how to fix the other underpaid morons on your team's mistakes, cut out shit from the E3 trailer in sneaky ways.

Go for real job engineering shit, where you do similar shit, but with respect and better wages.

Learn2mod some games, like falloutNV, as a hobby to scratch that itch.
>>
Major in engineering and minor in vidya design.
>>
>>253836129
If you take CompSci, don't go in wanting to work in vidya.
My interest in CS started through video games, but I dropped that hope when I looked at how hard it was to get into the industry. OP, just learn how to make vidya by learning yourself/taking other classes. I know way too many people who went into CS wanting to make video games, then quit or failed due to being too focused on vidya. The only guy I know who got through tried to get hired. When he finally found a studio, the pay was pitiful and he left soon afterwards. Now he makes a lot more.
Video games are a shit job to work in, just learn on the side.
>>
>>253836129
Do you want to study really hard then work really hard and make a lot of money

or do you want to study not very much, work insanely hard to make mediocre money and in the end have very little control over the end product so you can't even take pride in your own work.
>>
Game design is a shitty fucking major. Its a fucking scam and you won't be making vidya you'll enjoy. Be a comp sci or stay in Engineering and learn game design on the side since its related to the shit you'll have to master eventually. Don't be a retard.
>>
>>>/adv/
>>
if your uni has a software engineering degree it's better for getting actual programming knowledge than comp sci is unless you want to work in a research field
>>
>>253836129
take the engineering position

make vidya as a hobby in your spare time while being wealthy instead of being a failed game designer who is either homeless or works for EA

you're welcome
>>
>all these faggots who think a real hands-on game design course isn't a beneficial thing

My University has constant projects going on to grade you, working with other disciplines like programming courses and art courses to produce games, to help you learn, and there's also external companies (vidya and non vidya, for instance BP, Sony, UK government) who come in to give you briefs, and you have to report to them each week like a real job, working along to a brief and their changing demands.

There's also loads of funding available to take projects beyond the classroom and maybe even start your own company.

You're all a bunch of bitter faggots.

Double major, or do a double degree over 5 years if your UNI allows it and you can afford it. I did Physics and Comp Sci double major which worked out well after a few years in the industy. I would avoid game design programs as a single major unless your school forces you to take some of the more difficult Comp Sci courses or if you are an extremely disciplined as a self learner. Also start designing games using the tool available right now: IOS, Andriod, XNA, Monogame, Unity. You will be surprised at how much you can accomplish nowadays with those tools and maybe even the amount of money you can make uses them in after a few months.

Funny thing with respect to that picture is that it is true that Comp Sci can be easy if you pick your courses accordingly, but it can also be as hard if not harder than Physics if you take the courses in advanced algorithms, discrete/analysis math, computer automata, and compiler design.

Civil Engineer here, do Computer Engineering, and you'll be able to North write software, firmware, AND design hardware for all aspects of computer science, video games included.

Trust me, the computer engineering degree will have you making 6 digits in 6 years, easily. Please please please do not squander this opportunity. Get the degree, and you'll find that video game companies (and everyone else in tech) will be incredibly impressed and eager to recruit you with that degree.

Good luck, and don't waste this chance.

I am a video game designer at a major AAA console developer. I have a degree in computer science and a masters in business.

I worked for 4 years as a programmer and then switched to design. Life is good but let me tell you something: The quality of designers is really, really varied. Some of the designers at my company are amazing and you can tell after a 10 minute conversation with them how fucking good they are at their jobs. Others are gibbering retards who struggle to play the simplest games on the market.

This suggests to me that getting into design is more luck than skill.

Comp Sci has been a crap shoot for the last 15 years. Try your best at getting some internships, figure out what works for ya and try to land a job with a company you interned with. DBA can be a terminal position that caps out fairly low pay, unless you are an elite consultant. Networking can pay a lot but requires piles of certifications. To do well in terms of money you have to be elite or figure out a way to be self employed.

Any Computer Science majors here who can help an anon out and let me know what the job market / salary's like? Do you like it? Wish you would've majored in something else?

I fucked up and pursued the wrong major for two years and am now switching to CS as a rising junior. It sounds goddamn awful, but it's not really that bad since I have a four-years-renewable full ride, so in the end I'll only be paying one year of tuition (I'd graduate in CS three years from now). However, I'm kinda stuck between switching to CS and an electrical engineering degree - and the difference would mean graduating three years from now, or four years from now (engineering curriculum is STACKED). The time to decide is now. What's /v/'s advice? Any based anons wanna help me out?

not worse than hitler but if you're honestly living off welfare and not even trying to succeed in life then you really are better off dead.

your parents have probably had that thought, too. at some point, you mother or father must've quietly thought to themselves, "wow, we'd have a better life if this kid just disappeared", but then quickly silenced themselves because they "love" you.

do something with this life you have.

Since we're all arguing about this shit, I'll lay out something for you roody-poos that at least 90 percent of the lurkers probably already realize:

The perfect major is different from person to person, and trying to establish a priori ('self evident' you retards) 'true' tier lists for majors is like trying to figure out who someone should marry or date.

People have different skillsets, of which the only way we as roody-poos have to judge is economic output, which is a really fucking shitty way of determining value, because plenty of shit has non-monetary value.

The respectable STEM kid realizes that his world is better for the breadth of sciences and arts and humanities, and learns to appreciate other people's employment of skill and talent while making lots of money.

The good humanities kid realizes that he is making a conscious choice to go against what would be the 'most straightforward' path to success because their skill-sets and interests do not align perfectly with the current market structure, and appreciate that the STEM people have different interests and take great pride in the applicability of their work.

Eh i realized I was being a fagot by typing this much but I might as well post it.

TLDR everyone is faggot

>In the few weeks summer break between my internship I want to kill myself out of boredom.

This is truly the worst thing that can happen to a human being. I hope I never fall into this protestant vicious cycle where you are so consumed by your job your mind simply can't fully enjoy other activities. Worst of all, you are actually happy running endlessly in your little comfortable mouse wheel and you think it is normal because everyone around you is doing the same, except that lazy mouse on the corner of the cage. I've seen it happen to everyone around me, everyone wanting to build a career or a family. I've seen it happen to my mom and dad, to my friends, to coworkers, to my sister.

These are truly wicked days we live in. You go to your job everyday, when you are not working you are thinking about it, when you go out you are networking, the only books you read are self-motivating "how to be productive and happy!" crap, you only watch tv shows and videogames so you can make small talk at the office. All of this for what? So you can spend a couple of weeks in Paris every year with children that barely know you and retire at the age of 50 so you can die of depression in a Caribbean shithole because of a deep seated regret for wasting your life. I'd rather be a hobo than live such a life, which is a truly depressing, because I'm 100% sure I'd probably be some traveling hobo by now if it weren't for my trust fund babby status.

Biomedical fag here.

I don't know shit about chemistry and am at the top of my class. It will be important, but you will acquire these things when time comes.

Math too, Statistic is very fucking important for the scientific process in general, but this is more about logical thinking than numbers. we invented PCs and calculators for crunching numbers.

And having good subjective thought is good. We biomedicals are primarly scientists, and science is, in the end of the day, phillosophy. Being able to think out of the box is the single most important thing a scientist need to be able to do.

Start thinking of yourself more as a scientist and less of a biomedical student and you'll do fine.

I hate the fact that I'm back on this shitty fucking board out of boredom, but fuck it, I can help someone.

Yeah. I got taken out of school in the first grade so my parents could "home-school" me and be dipshit traveling musicians. But being dipshit traveling musicians, they weren't educators, so once they realized that they had to actually get their hands dirty and spend time teaching me, and that I wasn't going to sit there with a Wal-Mart brand "EDUTAINMENT" activity book and teach myself? They gave up. I'm 28 years old now, and up until a year ago, my education had ended at the first grade level. Even after I turned 18, I was still chained to them thanks to their shitty financial decisions, their shitty failing "business" that *I* had to keep afloat as Lead Technological Slave Boy, and their ailing health. Finally, turned out my father was eligible for Disability (neurological disorder), and my mother could be paid to be his care-giver, so they didn't need me to keep them afloat anymore.

I've interned at one, it wasn't great, but maybe that was because I was on an intern spot.
I'm personally studying to teach high school instead.

One of my professors was reminiscing about his experiences traveling the glove while working different sites and villages and it just seemed like the perfect life.

I haven't actually taken anything beyond introductory courses but if administrative skills are a must then I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and rid myself of my introversion.

How about a mechanic? Its kind of like fixing a big oily computer that moves and shit, and with the diagnostic technology nowadays it seems pretty easy to learn how to fix a car

Plus all sorts of people would be clamoring after my dick for discounts on how to fix their shit

I failed high school so I couldn't do anything else. But I don't mind the job and it pays enough money that I can afford to live and buy PC upgrades when I need to.

February of 2013, I signed up for a GED prep course with the intention of becoming an electrician when I got my GED. Told my GED instructor about my plans and she just about shit herself trying to convince me to continue my education, so I took her up on it. Turns out my zero income made it so my Pell grant would completely cover the cost of my tuition at a local community college, so full steam ahead. Got my GED in May 2013 with a 3.7 GPA (which is sort of disingenuous to say since it's just 5 tests (or it was, GED has changed since then)) and started going to a local community college last August.

Been a NEET that is putting his life back on track and this year I will get my "bachelor degree?" (I dunno how is it called in muriland) so I'll have to choose a career. Sciences, math and the likes never interested me but I perform very well in history, literature, classics etc.

The question is, should I pick a law degree for the dosh or major in some philology for the enjoyement.

Is law worth it?

Not that guy, but the problem is you're a parasite who's living off of the work of other human beings. A society can deal with a few parasites, but enough parasites will eventually kill the host.

However you rationalize it, you're wasting other people's resources. Resources that could enrich and enliven the lives of people who are actually worthy of care.
