Swords, despite their versatility are pretty overrated and even certain parts of the sword are underrated. Most of the time pommels and guards are only there because they look cool and Robin's a little different but hopefully he's more magic than sword.

Ike is cool though since ingame he's more of a dude who carries around a big ass piece of metal that happens to be capable of cutting things. Link is basically a walking armory or a medieval operator. I haven't played FE:A but isn't Lucina able to use more than just a sword?

It's a shame that most other weapons in vidya and whatnot aren't played up as much as swords. I blame this on swordfags.

Simple answer is:
A. He's not the main character of his game.
B. His game came out between Melee and Brawl, Ike was more relevant at the release of Brawl.

I'd personally love to see Hector playable cause SSB has never had an axe user but at the end of the day Marth is apparently more popular and Ike had two standalone games at the helm. Robin deserves his spot as a hybrid magic user. Obviously Hector is a better choice than Lucina since she's Marth 2.0 but she's more relevant and popular right now.

Hope FE14 has the main lord use an axe.

I did the same thing with Gaius on my first playthrough, oddly enough. Took him for just another enemy and killed him. Feels kinda bad, because I got him on later playthroughs and loved the character.
