So this was released on PC. Why don't you have it yet?
Because I recently tried this series out for the first time and played the GBC one and was really disappointed. Are the rest of them like that one or did the first just not age well (save for the graphics, that shit is ridiculous for a GBC game)?
The first one's generally considered better than the first one, so depending on what you didn't like in the GBC game, you might be out of luck with the second game.
I think you just have to beat the game, that's what I've heard.
I never played the GBC one, but I'm loving it. It's got exploration, but doesn't feel tedious. And the platforming itself is difficult enough for my tastes: tricky sometimes, but isn't hardcore precise.
That and every freakin' woman in this game jiggles. Dear god, if this series ever made the jump to 3D it'd be raunchier than DOA.
I thought it was just due to poor planning on WayForward's part?
It's a mix of both. The backgrounds and such were cut due to filesize issues and the fact we only got one game out of the three they wanted to do was because of lost time because of Wayforward needed to resubmit the game to Nintendo.
It pains me to see what they had planned and what they actually put out.
At least Pirate's Curse seems to be "complete'.
>two other episodes planned
>instead we get two ports
I bought this on 3ds since you people whoudn't shut the fuck up about it
I was very
dissapointed with how fucking embarrasingly short it was.
But since it has steam achievements I'm tempted to buy it again
Fuck me and my wallet
Risky's Revenge or Shantae?
Because if you're talking about Risky's Revenge, and you saw it talked about in a Shantae thread, you should have known that it's pretty short.
Didn't know much about shantae and got it on a whim, I've been liking it but the 'get 3 macguffins' has worried me, it's really that short then?
Kinda feel like it shoulda been 8 bux rather than12.
Need to finish the first one on the 3DS.
I like playing games like that.
Time constraints and hardware pressured Risky's Revenge to be too short, sadly.
It's a good game, but not really a good sequel.
If you enjoy platformers and timed challenges, then Y.
So how well does it play on PC?
I assume no real issues with controls or anything, a simple and clean port?
>So this was released on PC
It wasn't. Just on Steam
>Why don't you have it yet?
It's not available for PC, her new outfit sucks, I'm waiting for the annoying hype to settle down
>we'll never get Nega-Shantae as a playable character
The screen tear has been noticeable a few times but it's not like it's a fast moving 3D game.
I couldn't get it to work with my PS2 controller and had to resort to KeytoJoy and EVEN THEN I had to remap the movement to the numberpad key because it wasn't detecting the arrow keys.
It's playable but I just had to jump through a few hoops. Having to go through so much shit to look at the map is also one of my gripes.
I mentioned in a thread last night that WF seriously need a new PR guy. The person in charge now hardly does jack shit.
>it's not like it's a fast moving 3D game
Screen tearing is particularly jarring on flat 2D scrolling content, because you subconciously know the whole thing is a unit, but it moves in parts
None of that makes any software pirate-proof. Standard DRM can be cracked and the need for an account/online can be countered by server emulation. Shits done all the time for MMO private servers.
I bought it because I'm dumb. I hated it before and I hate it now. Risky's Revenge is way too linear and the transform dance is somehow even more simple and dumbed down from the original GBC Shantae.
Oh, and there's no dancing minigame.
For what purpose?
How many eShop original releases have you seen made into playable roms?
>Standard DRM can be cracked
Say what? I'm not talking about copy protection, securom or whatever. The DSi stuff is just locked down, TPM style. No idea on the details, I don't have a DSi in part because I don't support that shit, but I suspect it's basic encryption, which just so happens to be damn hard to crack without access to the key, or stored on inaccessible (encrypted?) flash within the DS or what ever.
Also, good luck emulating a server which does server-side encryption/decryption
It's pretty intriguing, dungeons are fun to explore and transformations add nice ways to explore more of the areas. Still, the backtracking can get really annoying. It also has some grind to it where you need to buy some potions and moves and the game is challenging so it can be critical to do that. I'm liking it more and more as I play through it, I encourage other people to play the first.
also, on the subject of easy to crack hardware protection: http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/09/29/0516251/gameboy-color-boot-rom-dumped-after-10-years
"Costis was able to dump the elusive boot ROM from the Gameboy Color by using various voltage and clock glitching tricks."
What's the chance DSi stuff is locked down on the hardware level?
You can save-state exploit the iguana minigame and have loads of dosh in like 5 minutes.
Shit like this is way over my head but god damn if it isn't fucking cool. All of this just so you can properly get the "ping" noise at the beginning?
>Don't even need to resort to save scumming
The dancing minigame is interesting enough. I really hoping they bring a more fleshed-out version of that minigame back in 1 genie, 2 hero or Pirate's Curse.
The BIOS itself is dead simple, just the logo and the sound. That BIOS however IS regular GBC code. That is, a bunch of instructions for the normal hardware. Curiousity and hacker-dom has it, that they want the code, just to see if they can. However, it's stuck deep inside the GBC, in a ROM that is never "seen" by the games. The games can not access that memory location. Because, why? It's just the intro sequence and bootstrapping the game itself. No need to ever return there. So if you want to actually read out that code, you got to be creative. In very simple terms the glitching just puts the GBC into a state where you can do your own access stuff, but still maintain a pointer to the BIOS code, being able to dump it. There's no real DRM in that particular BIOS, it's just hacker curiousity. But the fact they had to resort to glitches and abuse of the physical layer, is telling. Hardware DRM (TPM) is quite effective
They get dumped in these threads periodically. If I had them all I'd post them.
Someone has an Armpit Fetish they are desperately trying to beat, then saying "Just one more" in a futile attempt to end it with a bang, only to reignite.
Shantae threads are the most pleasant threads on /v/ and I'm glad to know all of you. :3
I Like the vest.
Shantae's bare armpits are great too though.
>Shantae is a secret character in SSB4
How would you react?
W-what do you mean? I just got home from work.
I would squeal like an autistic manchild who got his favorite pony in his happy meal.
And here I thought WF fans were above falling for some obvious bait.
I really want a .gif of a bunch of monkey shantaes swinging around a giant SOON™ logo
When I played it for the first time my jaw dropped during the fire in Scuttle Town. That game was just showing off some serious effects fireworks. I also like details like the day/night cycle, or that spot lights in dungeons do illuminate Shantae. Nice attention for detail, and good use of the GBC capabilities
Fuck you old man, I can stop anytime I want!
>no upload yet
>no decent camrip of dawn of the apes yet
>club nintendo prizes were shitty
Why is this week so shit?
Oh, I already bought. Just haven't played it yet because too busy hunting monsters.
Monster Hunter? I really only come to /v/ now a days for MH and shantae threads.
I'll get it I swear just cut me some slack, the last sale dried me out and there's too much stuff coming out lately my wallet is in pain.
I feel bad for not buying it now though, the game was just released, it should be on the top slots of steam sales.
Though fucking volvo is really dropping the ball too, they didn't even feature it in the main page properly.
>nintendo power's last issue was 2 years ago
/v/'s always good for something, no matter how bad it's gotten over the years. It's why I keep coming back.
Even with the banning of lewd stuff
Definitely a cutie. Backstabber, but a cutie.
Dude, your waifu's a bitch.
I'd still hit it, but the fact remains
It seems pretty alright. As far as I know voting hasn't started yet. Hell, I don't even know if development's started yet, they just barely got Risky's Revenge on Steam and Pirate's Curse still ain't out. Bastards.
I got it for the 3DS.
Beyond fancy sprite work and tits, it's a pretty average platformer. The writing is awkward, the level design is passable and the enemies are just annoying. The music is nice, but gets grating after a while.
I want to cum inside of Shantae and then have Rottytops lick up my jizz that's dripping out of her pussy.
Also the gameplay looks nice too.
what is it with this game? what is it that it keeps getting advertised everywhere? is it like 2BFP and skullgirls and that they're violently shilling their pants off every opportunity they get?
>with widescreen so you don't constantly fall into fucking pits you can't see
>hair whip length is more than a centimeter
Literally my only two problems with the original. I'd be okay with remake.
>people complain about falling into pits
>people complain about enemy spawns
>never had a problem with them, not even once.
Truth be told, I never actually fell into any pits except maybe once or twice. I just want more visibility so I can use the elbow and hair jump attacks more freely. The only enemy spawn bullshit was the scarecrows. Fuck those guys.
Generally you can avoid scarecrows by just slowing down and either whacking them or jumping over them.
It's the fuckers that pop out of the ground that only bothered me.
That was my problem, I wanted to go fast. I knew how to deal with them, I just still hate them.
>I wanted to go fast.
Had the same exact problem when I first started, but once you get the feel of the game, you start going fast again in no time.
I'm just surprised I ended up liking the game so much. I was expecting it to be rather ho-hum considering the somewhat obsessive cult following but it was pretty damn fun and so big for a GBC game.
It's round and chibi, and it's a monkey.
Not much to the cute formula beyond that.
So, anyone actually currently playing any of the Shantae games, or even just a Wayforward game?
>playing Mighty Switch Force
>tfw you get to that point of a game where you can't get any better at older levels and you can't get good enough to keep going
I'll be replaying RR shortly now that it's out on Steam.
There's probably at least one of them that has good shit stashed away somewhere.
I think Matt has this weird "daughter" complex for her.
He likes to draw her in all these different outfits, but I doubt he'd make porn, himself.
My gut tells me she would wiggle out pretty easily.
Most of the outfits are skimpy as hell though.
Are you telling me you wouldn't let your half-genie daughter go out dressed like this?
I never claimed to be good.
Oh man, I've seen those things. Creepy as fuck.
FUCK THIS ACHIEVEMENT, seriously. I finished the game but missed two Magic Jams (and thus one magic upgrade), and so I went back to get 100%. Figured I should try beating the last boss without potions as well, while I was at it. But holy fucking shit is that encounter built for frustration. All these little things, which didn't bother me at all the first time, gang up to fuck me over.
>No boss hp bar, so I can't see if I'm doing well or not, and as a result I really can't tell which magic is the best one to use.
>Hitting the boss with both the pike ball and your hair whip makes it flash so much I sometimes can't tell which attack is coming up next, meaning I take unnecessary damage.
>The mermaid routine in the second phase is incredibly hard to avoid unscathed, even if you hide underneath her for most of it.
>Failing the fight means going back to the save point, having to go through the dark room, being forced to re-watch the cutscene (even if the dialogue can be skipped, the animations can't be), and then beating Risky yet again - in a fight where you can only hurt her during very specific moments, so 80% is just waiting for those moments.
I just want to be able to fight the boss over and over, with minimum downtime, until I master it, beat it, and get my achievement.
Quite a bit ever since the Kickstarter. Go check for yourself. Then, y'know, play the games. They're pretty fun.
Always go with Pikeballs
You can't go wrong with Pikeballs.
Didn't know it was out. They didn't hype it much did they? I mean they weren't very specific with a release date and it just suddenly plopped out.
Thanks for the heads up though.
>This thread has done more to sell the game than the actual WF PR team.
At least it was free and had Dancer Shantae.
Man, DS owners kind of got screwed with Risky's Revenge.
Do you think we'll make it to the 1 million stretch goal?
Just pledged $35 last night. I hope it makes it.
They just have the absolute worst PR team ever. You have to openly commit to know anything about this game. Hell, only reason I knew RR came out was because once or twice a week I browse the new games section.
>implying I didn't fall in love with human Shantae
>implying I don't want her to transform into a monkey so I can hug her adorable fuzzy monkey self all day
Of course, of course, but one thing would lead to another. You don't get a shapeshifting girlfriend without experimenting, anon. Sooner or later you'd be plowing that tiny monkey.
Only if she asks me to. Adorable monkey Shantae is primarily for cuddling and hugging.
"Is that a Banana in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"
"Don't you wanna give your pet monkey a treat~?"
"I don't think we should --"
"Ooh, such a big one too, I don't know if I can fit it all in my mouth.."
AND THEN YOU FUCKED A MONKEY
That's what I'm primarily using. I tried switching to the flame-thrower, but then I just run out of magic in a few seconds. And I still think pike ball + whip does more damage. I sort of gave up and just popped a potion to get through the fight and get the 100% ending. Might go back and try without potions later on, but for now I'm just turned off.
>no new content other than a new content
Now that's just silly, anon.
Why would I say Monkey Shantae? It's not like there's another Shantae to confuse with her. Just Shantae works.
>Shiggity swag what's in the bag?
That one guy who draws these is great. Can never remember his name, though.
I really felt like the game as a whole was ridiculously overrated; the metroidvania elements were really unused for the most part outside of getting arbitrary items to move the story forward (the golden baby octopi for example), and the boss battles were incredibly half assed: they just repeat the exact same attacks over and over from the start to the battle's finish without ever changing despite the obnoxious numbers of hits needed to take them down. Also some of the dungeons felt really lazy, like the battle tower where you just killed low level enemies over and over while going up.
it's not showing up for me in the news / featured / store or anything
Had to manually look it up.
> Release Date: 4 Oct 2010
you wot m8
Ah, thanks. That guy's stuff is great.
because the new graphics over the old pixel art looks like shit and the design just generally looks lazy and like a flash port of mario. and I already own it on 3ds and got bored of it before the first boss.
Fuck, I just want to know if there's any progress being made on the two actual new games.
>neutral special is mermaid bubble
>side special is monkey charge
>down special is elephant stomp
>up special is harpy ascend
What the fuck, man. I just wanna hug the tiny monkey Shantae.
Must've took to many cues from her sprite, and not her actual concept art.
i don't want RR
i want pirate's curse
when's pirate's curse
And then there's always Inti Creates to blame, if you really must.
I wish I knew, anon. I wish I knew.
>play the Steam port
>shit XInput only support; failed to even include a method of quitting the game
>configuration files are all tied into the fucking save file
>want to ask WayForward if they're going to have better controller support in HGH
>other backers have turned the comments into a goddamn chat room
Why the fuck do these people exist?
For some reason that happens with every Kickstarter, and I'm sure WayForward had to hire some unlucky bastard to keep track of it all.
>Supporting a game made by Tomm Hulett, the man singlehandedly responsible for the death of the greatest survival horror franchise to ever exist, Silent Hill
>saving the thumbnail
You know, back in my day, trolling meant to mean something.
You've no one to blame but yourself if you didn't emulate the game first and don't like it.
I question your choice of having a 2DS, but other than that nice job. I would have advised waiting until beating the original before buying Risky's Revenge, though.
I swear this hasn't happened with any other Kickstarter I've backed.
Well it has been brought up in the forums, but I noticed the Steam store page has had it's controller support downgraded to partial because there is no way to quit with a controller currently. I wish Steam had more meaningful levels of controller support.
>you realize this was happening
They already said they won't do DLC for stretch goals they fail to reach. I guess they might change their mind if everyone rushes out and buys the game, but I don't see it happening.
This game looks like ass on the PC, holy shit. They just took the DS game and scaled it badly. The DS is like 192 pixels tall and the scale isn't even integer at that, so pixels are a bit distorted.
We have Sky and the rival genie for that though.
Storywise, it doesn't matter, all you need to know is that Risky loses, she wants her revenge, bing bang boom.
Gameplay wise, you'd definitely want to play the first one at some point, because it can be longer than RR is.
>Heart Squid collectables (which can be melted down to extend Shantae's health meter)
>Shantae will never preform a belly dance just for you
>You will never lick Shantaes belly
>You will never stick your tongue in Shantaes bellybutton
>You will never
cuddle shantae >Risky will never steal you to try and make Shantae butthurt, making Shantae come rescue you
I'm fairly ignorant as far as game development goes, but I've seen this feature implemented in several emulators, Dolphin and PCSX2 for example, as well as some GB/C, GBA and Game Gear emulators, even if crudely.
Lack of funds. I subscribed to their newsletter at least as early as 2008, but the last Shantae game I played was the GBC game. Wayforward have left me hanging for over half a decade, and now when they finally release a game on a platform I have, I'm $3,000 in the hole and literally cannot afford it.
I also really want Freedom Planet. This is painful. But I have more than 1,000 games on Steam so I'm in no position to be begging. I just really like colorful platformers with actually good spritework. At least the Winter Sale is not too far off.
For one thing if you extended the aspect ratio out you would have to make sure enemies still spawn correctly and don't just appear on screen. You would also have to redraw any backgrounds that aren't wide enough to fit this goes for the areas in the forest that have multiple layers in the background.
This is an example where to have this scene work in widescreen you'd have to move the character spawns instead of being where they would have previously been.
>have a computer
>no sequel, a bunch of attempts that fell on their faces
>6 years later
>a sequel, another game that's almost out, and a non-handheld based game in the works
strange how things work
>risky captures shantae in the process, ties her down and make her watch as she wildy rides your cock while tied down
Shantae fans are loyal as fuck. You gotta give them that. It's really just a matter of time though.
Not really complaining because I'll buy the game, pirating it first of not. Sadly I don't have any money left for games this month.
I wanted to play it now, since I have tons of games to play.
>Named Director's Cut
>Not adding the later chapters they were originally planning to release (Risky's Revenge was the first chapter and in the end it was the only one)
Director's Cut my ass!
And Shantae wans't on the original Game Boy either.
As long as they either buy the game afterwards or decide to fund the kickstarter I don't give a fuck. Hell if they bought the VC Shantae on the eshop that'd be good.
