Because I recently tried this series out for the first time and played the GBC one and was really disappointed. Are the rest of them like that one or did the first just not age well (save for the graphics, that shit is ridiculous for a GBC game)?
The first one's generally considered better than the first one, so depending on what you didn't like in the GBC game, you might be out of luck with the second game.
I think you just have to beat the game, that's what I've heard.
I never played the GBC one, but I'm loving it. It's got exploration, but doesn't feel tedious. And the platforming itself is difficult enough for my tastes: tricky sometimes, but isn't hardcore precise.
That and every freakin' woman in this game jiggles. Dear god, if this series ever made the jump to 3D it'd be raunchier than DOA.

It's a mix of both. The backgrounds and such were cut due to filesize issues and the fact we only got one game out of the three they wanted to do was because of lost time because of Wayforward needed to resubmit the game to Nintendo.
It pains me to see what they had planned and what they actually put out.
At least Pirate's Curse seems to be "complete'.

Because if you're talking about Risky's Revenge, and you saw it talked about in a Shantae thread, you should have known that it's pretty short.
Didn't know much about shantae and got it on a whim, I've been liking it but the 'get 3 macguffins' has worried me, it's really that short then?

The screen tear has been noticeable a few times but it's not like it's a fast moving 3D game.
I couldn't get it to work with my PS2 controller and had to resort to KeytoJoy and EVEN THEN I had to remap the movement to the numberpad key because it wasn't detecting the arrow keys.
It's playable but I just had to jump through a few hoops. Having to go through so much shit to look at the map is also one of my gripes.
I mentioned in a thread last night that WF seriously need a new PR guy. The person in charge now hardly does jack shit.

Screen tearing is particularly jarring on flat 2D scrolling content, because you subconciously know the whole thing is a unit, but it moves in parts
None of that makes any software pirate-proof. Standard DRM can be cracked and the need for an account/online can be countered by server emulation. Shits done all the time for MMO private servers.
I bought it because I'm dumb. I hated it before and I hate it now. Risky's Revenge is way too linear and the transform dance is somehow even more simple and dumbed down from the original GBC Shantae.
Oh, and there's no dancing minigame.

Say what? I'm not talking about copy protection, securom or whatever. The DSi stuff is just locked down, TPM style. No idea on the details, I don't have a DSi in part because I don't support that shit, but I suspect it's basic encryption, which just so happens to be damn hard to crack without access to the key, or stored on inaccessible (encrypted?) flash within the DS or what ever.
Also, good luck emulating a server which does server-side encryption/decryption
It's pretty intriguing, dungeons are fun to explore and transformations add nice ways to explore more of the areas. Still, the backtracking can get really annoying. It also has some grind to it where you need to buy some potions and moves and the game is challenging so it can be critical to do that. I'm liking it more and more as I play through it, I encourage other people to play the first.

The dancing minigame is interesting enough. I really hoping they bring a more fleshed-out version of that minigame back in 1 genie, 2 hero or Pirate's Curse.
The BIOS itself is dead simple, just the logo and the sound. That BIOS however IS regular GBC code. That is, a bunch of instructions for the normal hardware. Curiousity and hacker-dom has it, that they want the code, just to see if they can. However, it's stuck deep inside the GBC, in a ROM that is never "seen" by the games. The games can not access that memory location. Because, why? It's just the intro sequence and bootstrapping the game itself. No need to ever return there. So if you want to actually read out that code, you got to be creative. In very simple terms the glitching just puts the GBC into a state where you can do your own access stuff, but still maintain a pointer to the BIOS code, being able to dump it. There's no real DRM in that particular BIOS, it's just hacker curiousity. But the fact they had to resort to glitches and abuse of the physical layer, is telling. Hardware DRM (TPM) is quite effective

When I played it for the first time my jaw dropped during the fire in Scuttle Town. That game was just showing off some serious effects fireworks. I also like details like the day/night cycle, or that spot lights in dungeons do illuminate Shantae. Nice attention for detail, and good use of the GBC capabilities

I got it for the 3DS.
Beyond fancy sprite work and tits, it's a pretty average platformer. The writing is awkward, the level design is passable and the enemies are just annoying. The music is nice, but gets grating after a while.

Truth be told, I never actually fell into any pits except maybe once or twice. I just want more visibility so I can use the elbow and hair jump attacks more freely. The only enemy spawn bullshit was the scarecrows. Fuck those guys.
Generally you can avoid scarecrows by just slowing down and either whacking them or jumping over them.
It's the fuckers that pop out of the ground that only bothered me.

Had the same exact problem when I first started, but once you get the feel of the game, you start going fast again in no time.
I'm just surprised I ended up liking the game so much. I was expecting it to be rather ho-hum considering the somewhat obsessive cult following but it was pretty damn fun and so big for a GBC game.

FUCK THIS ACHIEVEMENT, seriously. I finished the game but missed two Magic Jams (and thus one magic upgrade), and so I went back to get 100%. Figured I should try beating the last boss without potions as well, while I was at it. But holy fucking shit is that encounter built for frustration. All these little things, which didn't bother me at all the first time, gang up to fuck me over.

That's what I'm primarily using. I tried switching to the flame-thrower, but then I just run out of magic in a few seconds. And I still think pike ball + whip does more damage. I sort of gave up and just popped a potion to get through the fight and get the 100% ending. Might go back and try without potions later on, but for now I'm just turned off.

I really felt like the game as a whole was ridiculously overrated; the metroidvania elements were really unused for the most part outside of getting arbitrary items to move the story forward (the golden baby octopi for example), and the boss battles were incredibly half assed: they just repeat the exact same attacks over and over from the start to the battle's finish without ever changing despite the obnoxious numbers of hits needed to take them down. Also some of the dungeons felt really lazy, like the battle tower where you just killed low level enemies over and over while going up.

Well it has been brought up in the forums, but I noticed the Steam store page has had it's controller support downgraded to partial because there is no way to quit with a controller currently. I wish Steam had more meaningful levels of controller support.

This game looks like ass on the PC, holy shit. They just took the DS game and scaled it badly. The DS is like 192 pixels tall and the scale isn't even integer at that, so pixels are a bit distorted.
We have Sky and the rival genie for that though.
Storywise, it doesn't matter, all you need to know is that Risky loses, she wants her revenge, bing bang boom.
Gameplay wise, you'd definitely want to play the first one at some point, because it can be longer than RR is.

I'm fairly ignorant as far as game development goes, but I've seen this feature implemented in several emulators, Dolphin and PCSX2 for example, as well as some GB/C, GBA and Game Gear emulators, even if crudely.
Lack of funds. I subscribed to their newsletter at least as early as 2008, but the last Shantae game I played was the GBC game. Wayforward have left me hanging for over half a decade, and now when they finally release a game on a platform I have, I'm $3,000 in the hole and literally cannot afford it.
I also really want Freedom Planet. This is painful. But I have more than 1,000 games on Steam so I'm in no position to be begging. I just really like colorful platformers with actually good spritework. At least the Winter Sale is not too far off.
For one thing if you extended the aspect ratio out you would have to make sure enemies still spawn correctly and don't just appear on screen. You would also have to redraw any backgrounds that aren't wide enough to fit this goes for the areas in the forest that have multiple layers in the background.
This is an example where to have this scene work in widescreen you'd have to move the character spawns instead of being where they would have previously been.
