How the fuck did a children's game hits the head on the nail for the horror genre better than any AAA game out there?
Those sound effects
That crushing, ice-cold, pitch black maze
Those terrifying prompts advanced with a blood curdling un-earthly growl
That fucking jumpscare at the end
It's like they actually know what scares people.
Also yeah, fuck the sound effects. I forgot about them and they fucking scared me shitless when I got my first prompt.
And I forgot how terrifying the slug looks in full detail. I jumped out of my seat while getting screen shots for this image. I don't know how my younger self even pulled himself through to finish the game.

Alright, while we're on the second thread on the subject (love ya night /v/), let's see if anyone knows what this book is. I remember a bunch of stuff about it, except the title:

> The premise of the book is a like 12-year-old kid become president of the USA.
> May have been the sequel to a book about the campaign, but I never read it, so I have no idea how the like constitutional age limit was circumvented. I think his campaign platform was a ban on homework.
> A Secret Service agent is an important character. He takes a bullet for the protagonist at one point.
> There's like a stereotypical Arab dictator who acts as a main villain, pretty sure he was meant to be a caricature of Saddam Hussein/maybe a little Khomeini too.
> They have a diplomatic meeting where the dictator challanges the kid to a video game to settle their dispute
> It was a fictional game that was described in surprising detail, sort of like a 3D competitive Missile Command. Also it was for the N64.
> At the end the kid realizes that he's not even close to ready to run the most important country on Earth, so he resigns, and his VP, who is also his nanny, becomes the first black, physically disabled, woman president. (Except not the physically disabled part because fdr had polio put I just realized that now)

I feel like rereading this would be an interesting look at our pre-9/11 political climate, among other things. Also the vidya part was cool.

I'm planning to borrow a copy of The Dispossessed at the library soon. Every sentence she writes is quotable as poetry; I just love it so much, especially the breathtaking writing in The Wizard of Earthsea.
>“It is no secret. All power is one in source and end, I think. Years and distances, stars and candles, water and wind and wizardry, the craft in a man's hand and the wisdom in a tree's root: they all arise together. My name, and yours, and the true name of the sun, or a spring of water, or an unborn child, all are syllables of the great word that is very slowly spoken by the shining of the stars. There is no other power. No other name.”

Dan Simmons

Orson Scott Card

They bring in great insights to the process of writing, what kinds of books to read to prepare yourself to the endless journey of learning and suffering, and how to start writing in the first place.

Nah. I'm rereading Dan Simmon's articles on writing, and currently reading a section about a now defunct scholarship on writing from his college that died from a feminist's intervention that led to the college giving out 2500 dollars to a schizophrenic Hispanic Chicagoan who hasn't written anything before.
That said, I kinda miss reading the Captain Underpants series. The copies I had were destroyed in a basement flood that hit two years ago, and I'm too embarrassed to buy copies or borrow them from the public library.

>Speaking of which, what was that one BS rule your school got rid of the year after you left?
it's a toss up between having only one piercing per ear and bringing your own laptop into the school library.

i was going to get my ear pierced a few more times and just stick more sleepers in it because i tried to be edgy at times. instead i just mellowed out and became everyone's friend.

the laptop in the library issue came up during my final senior year. i borrowed the laptop of a guy in my programming class to try and finish off our first term assignment. cranky librarian went full retard and accused me of hacking school computers. the laptop was confiscated by her until the school's acting principle had a stern talking to me about shit she didn't understand. my programming teacher ended up sorting everything out and i had full access to the computer labs whenever i wanted it after that. full school assembly was then called the following week where they announced the banning of laptops in the library and talks about hacking and cyber security popped up here and there for about a month. it was so shit.

I don't know that the problem is more people on the internet. We individually have a pretty limited view of the cultural 'net and at least in this thread I doubt there's anyone here who witnessed for example the BBSs of the 90s.

I think a major problems that made the net worse basically boil down to two things: a) competition for validation (upvotes, likes, etc.) and b) "toxicity" (like wow holy shit the word "netiquette" used to actually exist wtf)

I'm sure there are communities somewhere that are great, but they aren't here.

field trips were ovverated anon. By 8th grade me and my friends figured out that instead of going to a dinner theater or some garbage...we could have a party the day before, have a pizza party then game the whole weekend. Trust me you didnt miss out on shit. I remember there was 2 field ttrips that you had at the end of the year 7th and 8th..to one of those park things where they have like unlimted bbq and crap. We didnt go and had a sleep over party and played magic the gathering...everyone told us how amazing it was so we went next year and it sucked ass. Kids overhype the shit out of field trips /rant

>In 4th grade teacher was sick for a few months
>Had a substitute teacher, Mr W
>One of the things he would do is read a book to the class between subjects, usually a chapter
>He picked James and the Giant Peach
>Very animated when ready it, would do voices
>At the end of every chapter he would have the characters die in brutal and visceral ways

All of my field trips were in the middle of the fucking week, so you either went or stayed at the school and did worksheets the whole day. I ended up just skipping on those days.

>mfw my mother bought me all of those books

Even got the one where you got a life sized dragon egg, it's a shame I never learned D&D I think I would of found it very enjoyable.

I'd still like to learn, I'm just on /tg/ drawthread at the moment, where can I find a group to play with...by that I mean friends?

Hey, I too am looking for people to start learning D&D with. What a shame we'll probably never find some people to play with.
>>
>>253069624

just find a game on roll20, /tg/ neckbeards are some of the friendliest humans on the planet, at first its awkward with rule checking and looking up stats, but once you get into the flow of it, honestly nothing compares

As good as you make that sound, I can help but feel that I'll only end up making everyone angry with my newfaggotry.

>tfw I asked my friends if they would like to learn how to play D&D together

They called it nerdy shit and I never learned becuase my friends were disgusting normalfags.

And don't even get me started on LARP, they shat all over it.
>>
>>253070108

Seriously anon just go fucking do it you piece of shit, instead of sitting here being misreable while looking through that yotsuba b blue colour most of the day, maybe we would all be less like the things we loathed if we actually fucking tried for once

Oh man I want to read these books again. I gotta dig around at my moms house. I remember 4 being the best. I actually started my own mini comic company with a friend back in school. It stared some stick figure named billy and I'm pretty sure half of it was stolen spongebob jokes. Now I gotta go find those somewhere..

I had a group of friends that had planned on staying a LARP thing, but for some reason once I showed interest they have up on the idea.

not to jerk all of anons' cocks, but I feel like this is one of the few places (aside from some forums and irc channels) where people respect each other and behave mostly civilly online, once you learn to look past all the shit posting.

Book 4: Tehanu:
Instead of it being a rousing magical adventure story, it was the tale of how every man in Earthsea suddenly became a huge dick 24/7 and mercilessly harassed Tenar and Tehanu. Ged is not exempt: he loses his powers and becomes a fucking baby. Basically, it was extremely preachy, whereas the other ones were not at all so.

And also it came after book 3, which I personally think is the best one of the series.

Book 5: The Other Wind
I don't remember much about this one. My problem with it was similar to Tehanu, where it features Tenar feeling and talking instead of doing, except now you have a mage with feelings of inadequacy who does the exact same thing. Maybe my memory is getting fucked, but I think Tenar was more of a protagonist in the 2nd book, where she didn't go "woe is me" and actually beat the lovecraftian horror she had been serving for her entire life.

There you have it. Books 4-5 are the Dark Dawn to book 3's TLA. Apt considering that book 3 was written in 1972 and 4-5 in 1990/2001
