Earthbound/Mother Thread

Yeah, it's pretty charming. But it's as standard as an RPG gets.

Combat is extremely dull. Everything else is cool.

Okay, the most important thing I've noticed about EarthBound is that you should probably go in not expecting the greatest game of all time. Hype tends to betray a lot of good classic games.

It's a charming game, has a unique setting an themes that a lot of games don't have, and it will probably entertain you if you give it a chance.

Of the trilogy it's actually the most lighthearted, although it has its dark moments. The Mother series satirizes the RPG genre and has a good sense of humor about it, and the atmosphere reminds me of my childhood. Gameplay wise it isn't particularly special, I think the battle system is supposed to be a parody of early Monster Quest. All in all it's a great game and you should play it.

It's a dull, repetitive game that hipsters pretend is a masterpiece. Don't even bother.

bottle rockets sort of blow the game apart so try not to abuse those.

I reccommend playing Mother 1 first, then Earthbound, and finally Mother 3.

Pretty good trilogy, very charming and whimsical games.

It's best to play the whole series, but if you start with Earthbound, Mother can be a bit jaunting.

For the sake of argument, let's say that mother 1 takes place in 1982 and earthbound 1998.
That means that ness was born when ninten was 16-17. It's young, but not impossible.

I beleive the notion comes form reading 2ch anonymous posts, which basically is like coming to 4chan to see people's reactions on a game. People bash games because it's anonymous and free.

Many people in Japan didn't like Mother 3 because of the Mother 2 nostalgia. Honestly, I see this a lot on the west too, maybe a little less because not that many people played Earthbound back in the day, but those who did, will probably never take Mother 3 as better than EB.
But of course there were people in Japan who liked it too. It was well received, just maybe it didn't live up to Mother 2's popularity.

Personally, I like all the games for different reasons, Mother 3 is the one with objectively best gameplay though.

It's very fun once you get into it. Play it if you like having fun.

I thought Earthbound was okay. Didn't really like how the overworld was segmented and the game could also really drag. The story is also pretty basic and just boils down to "unlikely heroes team up to fight the big bad", with some twists here and there. What the game really excels at is fostering a very unique and compelling atmosphere. Music is great too.

I feel that Mother 3 is the stronger game. The gameplay's more interesting, the pacing is better, the characters are better, the story's better. I would even say that the music's better.

A chunk of Earthbound's music was Mother 1 remixes, and even then it's overall worse than Mother 3's. All 3 games have good music though.

I really got caught into the story in Earthbound and Mother 3. Then I went full pleb and quit both games after I was supposed to grind to beat some bosses. Fuck me.

It's the most "off" game i've ever played. You know all the spooky Nintendo stuff they're done over the years? Like the Mario 64 piano, Lavender Town and most of Majoras Mask? Well, EarthBound is pretty much an entire game of that kind of atmosphere. Even when everything is charming and upbeat, something just feels wrong about the game.

I played it for the first time just last year after being in the same position as you and was completely blown away by it. It's probably one of my favorite games now.

Once you get Duster it's all good though.

I went into it with all the hype and had big expectations. I'm in the beginning and honestly don't see a reason to keep playing this game. It's quirky and whatnot, but that isn't really keeping my attention. It doesn't help that the battles are extremely boring.

Maybe had I not went into it expect something epic I'd accept it, but it's really not interesting to me at all and I have no drive to continue playing it.

Also, it's not skippable, unless you want to completely miss on who Gyiyg is.

It's like playing Mother 3 without playing Earthbound, you won't be familiar with who the antagonist is.

Also, really, it's just 3 fucking games niggers, they're not even that long (for JRPG standards), just play them all.

If you're too casual to handle Mother 1 you can use that "easy ring" thing some fans added.

Actually, every Mother game is standalone-ish, only needing the sequel/prequel if you want to dig even further in.
It's like every game is a dish of one full meal. Having the whole meal is delicious, but sometimes you're fine with one or two dishes and that's OK.

Earthbound Zero is the NoA translation. The fan translation of the Mother 1 side of Mother 1+2 (GBA) is the better option.

I like Earthbound's music, but I liked Mother 3's more.

The Earthbound Zero on nes with Demiforce is the NoA version while the translation of Mother 1 + 2 on GBA is the total fantranslation with easy ring. GBA has the shittiest quality of music, though.
