1 is a good traditional RPG, but 2 is on par with the best the SNES has to offer like FF5/6 and Chrono Trigger. It just does everything so much better.

Probably because they tend to live in the water and no one wants to go through the effort of making an underwater section in most fantasy games. So without that there is no need to add a race with a homeland that that isn't just a coast and an implied kingdom in the water.
