First time playing XCOM and holy shit. Do these fuckers actually miss? I'm blindplaying on classic ironman and these fuckers instantly overwatch or pick off anyone who isn't already in full cover. It's very annoying and I've restarted a whole campaign due to failing objectives and losing my best units to these scrotumchasers.

Explosives are guaranteed damage. Abuse them because for a while Thin Men will be the biggest threat that you'll face. Don't worry about losing weapon fragments, you'll have more than you'll know what to do with by just playing normally. What you should try to do is feed kills to one unit as much as you can until you have a sergeant, hopefully by the end of month 1. Once you have a sergeant, you can increase squad size to 5, which dramatically increases your options.

Yes. Once I got into the rhythm of it, it was addictive; a feeling I didn't think I'd experience again with video games. If you like Fallout 1+2 then you'll love this. It's them but more polished. Not as stylistic though.

Max Payne had a very long development cycle so it went through a lot of iterations. Originally it had a much less grounded feel which was more like Kingpin.

HL2 Beta was pretty neat, back in like 2005 I was on a team that fixed up some pretty neat stuff in the code that wasn't working in the leak itself.
