Is there a worse video game genre than RPGs? From JRPGs to CRPGs this genre proves time and time again that it isn't trying to create a compelling and challenging experience through gameplay mechanics, level design, and or enemy encounters, but instead focuses on presenting mediocre stories and interactions with shallow characters while automating as much of the gameplay as possible.
The only RPGs that manage to break the mold of being glorified visual novels are the Soulsborne games and their derivatives (mainly because of their extremely minimal use of "RPG elements").

There is literally no reason to play old video games. Everything made back then has either been replaced by something similar, but more refined or was honestly never good in hindsight.
You have ten seconds to name me just ONE single video game made before the turn of the millennium that has game mechanics that still hold up today with modern standards.
