I'm playing through XC at this moment but I honestly wouldn't recommend playing it given your backlog. It's a good game but some of the things like too many fucking quests, easy to overlevel and fucking level penalty is a huge turn off.

Anyway, I'd say go with either Chrono Cross and Legend of the Dragoon.
I have yet to play Baten Kaitos myself.

I'm glad this thread popped out, I've been meaning to play a "summer JRPG" but don't know what to play. I'm pretty much done with Xenoblade now, not sure if I'll do the optional superbosses.

i donno. early 200x's had early counter-strike which i feel was the golden age of custom maps, and ultimately when i enjoyed video games the most. almost every game ran purely off of player owned/hosted dedicated servers.

there was definitely a dry spell in the mid 200x's where everyone i knew was playing mmo's but it picked back up again in the late 200x's.

then crates and esports happened and now everything is a lobby and it's 100% not fun

Just finished playing the second one a few hours ago, the level design was far worse than the first game but the music and story was good enough to keep me playing until the end.

And I don't think my console is JTAG'd because I wasn't banned from Xbox Live. But is is a used console and it might be JTAG'd
