If it's not flavor of the week shooter game, they basically stay quiet and start making faces that they regret talking to you, which really sucks, because I would love to talk about atelier crafting at length.

final fantasy VI (III in US) is the best and first one you should try. Ignore all the other over-hyped garbo

I would do ff4 and ff7. they both hold some of the best of the series like the best storytelling and characters respectively.

I was experiencing "depression" in college and this game pretty much got me through it. (it wasn't depression, I was just in an awful relationship instead of enjoying the college lyfe).
I wish they made the city building more expansive and complicated and the dungeons slightly more interesting but honestly it is an amazing game.
