I wish I could remember the name of the ps2 disc that had a demo reel of ps2 games and great techno track over it

Your saves share two constant states between being loaded and saved: After saving, the game can be loaded as normal. While loading, the game saves once again, this time with information planted inside that says that the game has already been loaded once. Restarting the game and loading once again will read this data, and begin the scene.

When you load your game the file itself is saved with a flag "game loaded". When you save and quit the flag is overwritten with "game properly closed". If, on load, the "game loaded" flag is true it means you reset and/or there was a power failure. It's the same way Windows knows when it crashes.
