I'll start.
In response to Digibro's Paper Mario video, I did some thinking and realized the role of turn based combat that's so prevalent in JRPGs.

See, nearly every game mechanic is meant to be an abstraction of some real life mechanic or behavior or action. Games, particularly as narrative mediums, need to create an impression or abstract of a set of real life occurrences to sell particular sensations and fantasies.

The second part of this analysis also stems from an idea I had concerning player attention, particularly in three segments:
>Immediate/Short term
>Mid Term
>Long Term
These are similar to how the military categorizes various levels of command for operations, from the theater level down to individual soldiers.

JRPGs, as story focused but linear descendants of Table Top RPGs, tend to try to direct most of the player's attention to the long term. Nintendo RPGs tend to focus even further on the Mid Term, a region that encapsulates the environmental points of interest in these games (Pokemon Gyms, Fire Emblem Arcs, Paper Mario Star Arcs).

The thing that Nintendo and Miyamoto seem to have misunderstood about RPGs is that turn based combat is not meant to be the focus of these games despite the time consumption of them. They are meant to be an organized but fairly standard abstract of combat in a story that includes fighting as an element. Particularly, in order to give a sense of progression that is controlled by game systems rather than player skill.

The exciting part of these combat systems is not the combat itself but the context the combat is taking place in that gives meaning to your actions. ME2 doesn't have the best shooting for a third person shooter but the context for why and how you fight gives your actions more meaning in those missions, it embodies a sense of both style (your class) and power that is explicit in the story and implicit in the combat.

Color Splash and Sticker Star fundamentally don't understand this issue.

It's the same fallacy that many first person shooting titles misunderstand, where they try to keep the player on a non-stop set-piece roller coaster, with no breathing room. In Titanfall 2 or Doom or even Wolfenstein, the breathing room gave players to reflect on the action, the same way sleeping lets your brain reflect on the day's events.

What don't you like about the gameplay? If it's the difficulty; the starting areas are very difficult and the game starts to go more smoothly once you hit level three or four or so. I think the game has aged well and I still play it every couple of years.
