Can anyone rec a goddess/mortal fic?
>>
Well, someone should copypaste the old OP's with some edits to the recs
>>
Been reading this for the past week. It's just as unbelievable as Skyrim itself in plot development, but kinda still hooking me for whatever reason.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1795186/chapters/3848677
>>
>>1875300
Seems like a good read from the prologue. I'll check it out, so thanks buddy.
>>
>>1875300
Never actually played any Skyrim, would I need to to read this?
>>
I need a new series. I feel like I've read all the good Once Upon A Time fics. Are there any other good live action shows whose fan base leans heavily towards yuri?
>>
>>1875579
It's pretty much like playing Skyrim. Plot points out of nowhere, people suddenly talking to you (and giving fetchquests)...but a little more cohesive and actually things connect (however coincidental).
>>
>>1875745
the only ones i can think of are xena warrior princess and rizzoli and isles
>>
Like em or not I'm posting some fics

Man, I am always gonna be in love with that one. Fiercely in love. I wish there was more good Mai Hime fanfiction like that.

Agent Carter and maybe The 100. Agent Carter has the added bonus of actually being good, if you can get past the foregone conclusion that she eventually marries and has kids.
>>
>>1875745
Person of Interest has quite a bit and the show is pretty entertaining
>>
>>1876033
>be european
>don't have S4 yet
>can't read fics, because it's all post-S3 or even S4

Goddammit.
Great show, nonetheless, even with some jarringly stupid plot devices.
>>
>>1876034
I am german, they just aired S4 here recently but I missed quite a few episodes so I am rather annoyed that Netflix US can't get their shit in check and make due on their promise of S4 in September. S4 has tons of Shaw and Root stuff so I am a little impatient.

The plot devices are a little ridiculous sometimes but its so over the top and rule of cool I honestly don't feel bad about it at all. Amy Acker is also a miracle.
>>
>>1876034
Just torrent it?
>>
>>1876039
I've left the loop of torrents too long ago to know which client, site and whatnot is "safe" (none really is), so I've stopped doing it entirely. Sage, because blogpost.
>>
>>1876048
I just use pratebay and kickass, and an old version of utorrent (mostly for the few occasions on which I use a private tracker) and I have neither been arrested nor had my laptop blow up yet. I actually just dled season 4 a couple of weeks ago.

If you don't mind an older/completed series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a ton of f/f stuff. Also a really good show, with canon lesbians.
>>
>>1876104
Anything really good that has the canon ones? Because looking through that very unsorted pile of stuff is ridiculous hard task
>>
>>1875745
Warehouse 13. The Bering & Wells fandom is still going fairly strong.
>>
>>1876112
Didn't Wells end up marrying a man and having children?
>>
>>1876113
If we limited our fandom to canon lesbians, we'd never have anything at all to talk about.
>>
>>1876110
It's been a few years since I read much Buffy stuff, so nothing off the top of my head (and I was more of a Buffy/Faith person). Just use the tags on ff.n and sort by favorites or reviews, for a start.
>>
>>1876121
I tried that but not a lot of people tagged the characters, probably because that fandom was active back in 200something when they didnt have character tags yet?
Buffy/Faith was always to intense for me
>>
>>1876101
>Rizzoli and Isles
How's the going anyway?
>>
>>1876123
That is certainly true, and a lot of fic was hosted on other sites that aren't around anymore. Try looking at popular fics' author's profiles, see what they have written/faved. It'll probably take some digging, but there's plenty of good stuff to find.
>>
>>1876124
Don't know, stopped watching a while ago. Too much focus on the character drama and not enough on the crime drama.

>>1876123
Yeah, it kind of sucks. AO3 has wonderful tagging and filtering, but only a fraction of the content of FF.net
>>
>>1876113
No. She hooked up with a woman named Giselle, but it happened off screen.
>>
>>1876124
On a break currently but took a trend like >>1876156 said. Last episode before the break was about some stalker coming after Jane, the same one who torched her apartment and hacked into her accounts, and then kidnapped Maura at the end of it.

I’m bored. Have some Bering & Wells fic recs:
Ages http://archiveofourown.org/works/2263941/chapters/4972236 - rated M, au, should probably be subtitled Everyone Was Abused.

Catalyst http://archiveofourown.org/works/376520/chapters/614451 - rated E

Resigned to these Histories (We Exist) http://archiveofourown.org/works/957200 - rated E, you should read all her B&W fics, her Shoot ones too. You know what, just read everything she’s ever written.

Travel http://archiveofourown.org/works/2512607/chapters/5581214 - rated M, au

Murmation http://archiveofourown.org/works/2797148/chapters/6278945 - rated E, au, probably one of the very best fics you’ll read.

Pygmalion http://archiveofourown.org/works/3326597 - rated E, pretty much just smut

I’ve Found a Whole New Way to Love You http://archiveofourown.org/works/471080 - rated E

Left Unsaid http://archiveofourown.org/works/298612/chapters/478109 - oh look one that’s not rated M or E.

Delivered http://archiveofourown.org/works/482182/chapters/838908 - and a babyfic to finish off.
>>
>>1876215
"Rated E" is commonly known as "for everyone" so you should probably use something else to denote "explicit."
>>
Any workable way to make Ao3 search only certain categories? Like just anime/manga, just TV-shows, just games, just movies, etc.
>>
>>1876216
Nah. It just makes it hilarious when they click on it expecting a wholesome family tale and instead get fists in dripping cunts.
>>
>>1875256
Can I get some good western animation fics? I want to expand my horizons and see if I can give non-anime fics. But like any good western cartoon will do, except Adventure Time. Bubbline is just so overrated to me.
>>
>>1876215
Let me toss in a few too:

that fluffy cop AU http://archiveofourown.org/series/117643 two stories, both rated G

The Future An Experiment http://archiveofourown.org/works/241982 rated M

Classification Error http://archiveofourown.org/works/310065/chapters/496203 rated M

Extenuating Circumstances http://archiveofourown.org/works/263381 M, but probably should be E, basically just very fluffy, romantic porn.
>>
>>1876215
>You should read her shoot stuff

I agree I really liked that stuff but just a warning in Digital Lion Depressed Root has Reese go down on her pretending its Shaw.

if anyone is interested in Tinkerbell fics, I've done a short series and I'm currently working on another entry that I predict to be done this week which will be (Tinkerbell/Periwinkle/Vidia). The links to the series are below.
I need to mention though, I've listed them in the order that I originally posted the stories and the order I recommend reading. However, if you want to read in chronological order, the timeline of the series goes 4 -> 5 -> 1 -> 2 -> 3
BTW, if your wondering why this series is five seperate links, my first entry, I wasn't expecting this to turn into a series and I didn't want to delete the first story and it's reviews

I wish I could get back into fanfiction. I read (or at least checked out) so many fics for about 5 years, up until a year ago or so, both for western shows/books and Japanese stuff. And I just grew so tired of the flaws. Fanfics of Jap stuff has the problem of being fairly rare, as well as generally having poor prose due to the unfortunate tendency of copying LN/manga-style affectations, so eventually I just got sick of searching (didn't help that Ao3 blew up and there was no finding that stuff between all the western stories). The western stuff didn't have it quite that bad, but it did have the issue of celebrating and promoting very mediocre stuff for some reason and, most importantly, holy fucking shit there's like three different stories being told over and over again with different characters in different fandoms. Or just the same characters. And it all feels so immature, it's all about the same stuff it feels like.

Nowadays I can't stand western fics because it all feels so predictable, as well as the prevalence of tumblr-memes and crossovers and pop-culture references which makes otherwise decent stories unbearable. But I'm way too lazy to search for a glimmer of gold in the eastern fic department having to trawl through pages and pages of western stuff or het stuff on Ao3/ff.net respectively just to find ANY stories, much less one not written like a chuuni 5th-grader. And inevitably the decent stuff is like 1.5k words and lasts me 3 minutes of enjoyment for 30 minutes of looking.
>>
Warmth is a fic I enjoy: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6514752/1/Warmth

It's pretty high on the angst, but I don't mind since it's fairly grounded and not related to dudes or DV which seems to be the go-to for angst and drama in fics. I like the writing a lot and the author does great drawings for it, though I dunno where the links to them went. I assume they'll be back soon.
>>
>>1877060

Fanworks are always subject to quality variance and random discontinuation. Just write your own stories if you're that thirsty for your OTP being totally OOC.

I was super into Nanoha, KOn and Vocaloid fanfics for a while, in that order, but the interest just kind faded away eventually. Now I'm tempted to get into them again and there is basically nothing new to read.
>>
>>1877060
There's only so much you can do with certain source material. But nowadays, almost every other story on AO3 is the same fandoms and pairings because they're "canon". And those ones aren't interesting in the slightest, I can say every trite romance cliché has been made into 10 korrasami fics, at least. Nobody is able to make fics for obscure fandoms because everybody flocks to the canon ones. Nobody has the imagination to spread yuri across EVERY piece of media and just resorts to making Carmilla fic #24357. But every so often, you can find the Holy Grail, all you need is dedication.
>>
>>1877060
There was a time when these threads would fly, and there seemed to be a lot of new stuff around.

It all feels so dead now. I don't doubt a lot of it is disconnection on my part (I don't follow any western shows or keep track of the 'scene' outside of /u/), but I was never that connected before either.

And there definitely weren't so many fucking coffee shop AUs a few years ago.

Maybe I should pick up my own fics again, or something.

To avoid pure blogposting, a currently updating fic I'm following, from a game I have never played:

Anyone have any decent Naruto fics? AO3 has nothing, and I don't feel like wading through FF.net's filters.
>>
>>1877060
I have that feel too. Back in the day I would read and write so much Vocaloid fanfic, and I would scour AO3 for all sorts of fics (mostly AUs because I don't watch that much western stuff, and AUs are, lets face it, pretty much original stories, so I can just enjoy a nice lesbian story).

These days everything sounds samey and boring, and I haven't gotten the urge to write anything in a long time. Vocaloid is dead, Steven Universe doesn't really inspire me to write or read anything, and I was into Frozen for a bit but that was ages ago. I guess I follow Citrus but I have a feeling that everything there's gonna be bad.
>>
>>1878084
>Vocaloid is dead,

Mostly true because too much angsty tumblrshit. I kind of like this new negitoro though:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/11501672/1/The-Hope-of-an-Empire

Didn't care for the author's YukarIA story but this one's pretty good so far.
>>
>>1879036
Angsty tumblrshit? What happened?

Thanks for the link. What didn't you like about Tokyo Intermezzo? I thought it was decent.
>>
>>1879036
>Mostly true because too much angsty tumblrshit

What do you mean?

>>1879078
Dont know about that anon, but Tokyo Intermezzo was too lesbian and not yuri enough for me. Not sure if that's the best way to describe it.
>>
>>1879078
I wrote "angsty tumblrshit" because every time I check that fandom on FFN it seems like there's a bunch of new fics where the characters are being bullied or cutting or just generally being shat on by life. Not every fic is like this but for some reason these have jumped out at me lately. Just my opinion.

I didn't have any issues with the quality of writing in Tokyo Intermezzo. It was more that I just couldn't see Yukari and IA as being the way she wrote them. Doesn't make it a bad story, just not my cup of tea. (Sex scenes were hella hot though.)

Her new story has badass!Luka in it, and I definitely want to see more of that.
>>
So how many people, after declaring they were writing something, actually finished/published it? I'm still waiting for that fic about Matryoshka.
>>
>>1879107
>too lesbian and not yuri

I'm not getting your drift. Are you trying to say that the characters were too "adult" and not cute enough? Or that there was too much sex? What does it even mean to be "too lesbian?"
>>
>>1879108
Most fandoms are like that anyway. Virtually no community produces quality stuff daily.

>>1879112
That's so vague. Which Matryoshka idea? Things I remember from the old threads:

Miku working at a burger place
Competing air traffic controllers
A bunch of Rondo ideas (two people delivered)
>>
>>1879121
>Miku working at a burger place
I still really want this. Someone please deliver...otherwise I might be forced to write it myself...sighh.
>>
>>1879125
>Miku working at a burger place
>Luka is the homeless woman she feeds the leftover burgers to
>Luka shows her gratitude with steamy dumpster sex

I'll alert the Pulitzer committee.
>>
>>1879134
>homeless

Never been a fan of these kinds of crazy ideas. If one hot shower and a fistful of chicken nuggets can turn this supposed hobo back into the tall, elegant, seductive Luka that readers commonly imagine her as, there better be some really damn good reason for how she ended up penniless in the first place.
>>
>>1879134
I was thinking more Miku and Luka were both poor college grads trying to eke out a living but whatever floats your boat
>>
>>1879167

In my mind, Luka is working a comfortable but boring office job while Miku took two years off music school. Luka takes Miku in and they start dating, but feeling guilty about mooching off Luka, Miku gets a job at a burger place to help pay the expenses.

Most of the stories will just be about their daily shenanigans, but there is an overarching development about their respective career choices that pokes its head out here and there before slowly but steadily creeping its way into the foreground.

It ends with them making up their minds about their job/school and what they want out of life, on a positive note obviously.
>>
>>1879121
Any of them. I know people said they were going to write something.

I've been really into Once Upon A Time fics lately. Is the show itself anywhere near as good, or should I just stick with the fanfics?

>>
>>1879115

I guess another way to look at it is that it doesn't feel "anime" enough. It's written so well that I thought I was reading a lesbian bull dyke story at times, especially how butch and unfeminine some characters appeared.
>>
>>1882194
No one is going to be surprised.
That said, if Mulan is going to get any this season is going to be with Merida.
>>
>>1886253
Fanfics that are intentionally written to be "anime" are usually insufferable.
>>
>>1886308

Yea, but talking about how your date has a u shapely flat butch ass is too lgbt for me in Fanfics
>>
>>1886253
I'm not sure what your definition of "bull dyke" is, but if you're using any characters in Tokyo Intermezzo as a reference, you clearly don't know any bull dykes IRL. The diesels I know don't look or act anything like any of the characters in Tokyo Intermezzo. Yukari with her flat ass is totally girly by comparison.

>>1886389
The passing comments about Yukari being butchy didn't bother me, but I'm a lesbian, so whatever. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
>>
>>1886628

They're not butch by 3DPD standards, doesn't mean I wanna read about flat asses.

I think I might know what you mean. I enjoyed Tokyo Intermezzo but it felt rather...'American', or 'white'. Definitely did not have much of a Japanese flavor to it. While Yukari is named Yukari Yuzuki, she might as well be named Sarah Marshall. It felt like the characters being Japanese, and the story being set in Japan, had very little bearing on the story and how the characters acted.

Of course, it's not like many fanfics read like the works of Ryu Murakami/Haruki Murakami/Natsuo Kirino etc, but a lot of them inject anime sensibilities into the story, which makes the Japanese-ness of the characters seem less incongruous than it is in Tokyo Intermezzo.

At least, that's what I thought of it.
>>

>anime sensibilities

This phrase still seems nebulous to me. What exactly do you mean? Tropes? Cliches? Certain speech patterns?
>>
>>1887074
>>1886909

I think it's not really an issue of trying to make the story more anime, but rather that it should be less "americanized"? Hard to put it into words right now. Maybe I'll think up some specific examples later.

Bad Romance updated after years of being dead if anybody was into that. It is probably the most infuriating NanoFate fic for me since all the stuff with Nanoha and Fate together is gold but the tens of thousands of words where they aren't interacting is completely boring and uninteresting. Seriously author, I don't need to see Fate hanging around with yet another OC girlfriend who will be dumped in a chapter or two when NanoFate fuck again. Hint at it but don't show me the stuff nobody is interested in.

Also, are there any good Cross Ange fics besides the Christmas one or did everybody abandon that show in the second half?

If the setting isn't in Japan, then what's the problem?
>>
>>1900711
Look at the board, then look back to my post, then think about yours again. Clearly I'm talking about anime and manga fic. In which case they generally are set in Japan, or at least a magical fantasy Japan. And even if they're set elsewhere the characterisation and setting stems from Asian and Japanese culture and experiences. If I'm reading fic for something it's because I want more of the thing the fic is written from, whether it's the further adventures of characters I liked or an embellishment of the story or setting I didn't get from the original canon. There's something unfulfilling about it when they miss that tone, like eating knock-off oreos - it's similar, but not the same and lacking a certain satisfaction.

And now I want biscuits. Dammit.

Eh, nah. If the setting is ostentatiously European or Tolkien-esque fairyland despite the Japanese character names, then might as well pretend it's Western.

What good is pretending something like Rondo takes place in Nipland?

I've really gotten into the Bechloe pairing from Pitch Perfect. Anyone have any good recs that don't have a lot of kudos on Ao3 or many reviews on ff3?
>>
>>1900767

It was an example. Don't be dense.
>>
>>1900702
I hear ya.

I don't have a problem with western fantasy AUs, but modern or historical Japan setting is almost never handled well by western authors. They often contain elements that just wouldn't fly in Japan. Japanese authors do handle these better, quite understandably.

People who don't speak Japanese probably don't have this problem, but with some settings and series, reading characters use English language itself feel awkward. With these, I hear the characters speak in Japanese even when I'm reading the dialogue in English. Hibike fics for example. I had no problem reading Japanese fics (there are really good ones). English ones, I either cringed at the obvious western elements or auto-translated the dialogue in my head.

Start learning Japanese, anon. It's never too late, and I promise it's easier than English.
>>
>>1900780
I'll stop when you do. There was much more to my initial post than the single point about the setting which you've chosen to latch on to apparently simply for the sake of being awkward.
>>
>>1900702
I feel you. A lot of English fics around JP fandoms (honestly, Vocaloid is really, really bad about this) simply feel awkward, it's too Western. I think I talked about this before in relation to Tokyo Intermezzo, but this is a problem that plagues a lot of fics other than Genki's. The characters, while Japanese, simply don't feel Japanese. They're really western. This is a problem in Hear My Song, this is a problem in Figure Drawing, this is a problem in Postage, this is a problem in Oscillation, and so on. None of these characters feel like they are Japanese in any way shape or form despite the names and character origins. I can forgive Falling, Crumbling/Of Common Blood because of the setting, but...the others just don't fit.
>>
>>1900788

Vocaloids don't have set personalities though and can be molded into anything. Most of those stories don't even try to pretend they're Japanese. I could see it if they try to make them Japanese idols like in On & On or something but a fic like Postage doesn't attempt to be a work where Japan or Japanese heritage is important at all.
>>
>>1900790
Vocaloids may not have set personalities but they're Japanese and have Japanese names and are of Japanese origin.

I can't pretend that a story where everyone has Japanese names isn't a story about Japanese people. It's not like not mentioning a character's race or nationality is going to make someone named Hatsune Miku white.
>>
>>1900702
Never had that problem, since most of what I like is either Western or AU. Have you tried Doujin? they're basically fan fics, but in comic form, right?
>>
>>1900792

I don't know, man. Luka's name could easily pass for Italian. Len isn't the most Japanese name in the world. Stuff like Gumi, IA, Oliver, and Lily aren't exactly ethnically restricted.

What if they're just Japanese-Americans? Not all Japanese people live in Japan. I've even seen that mentioned in stories before.
>>
>>1900785
I'm sorry you feel your masterwork of an anon post was underappreciated and only a portion of it was responded to.
>>
>>1900788
>Tokyo Intermezzo

This was the only one that I felt was too western. And I don't think I can really put the "blame" on the writer. I think looking at it fairly, certain words and scenes simply just triggered me into imagery that I strongly associate with real world American lifestyle.

Generally speaking, I don't have a problem with characters not being nip enough, even in stories that supposedly take place in nipland. Modern 1st world countries have a lot more in common than you'd think, especially among younger generations that practically grew up watching and listening the same stuff across the pond.
>>
>>1900702
Try reading fics about SoL anime, those don't have any issues.
>>
>>1900796
Kagamine Len? Megurine Luka? Those aren't Italian names and you know it. Oliver doesn't really count, as he is an English vocaloid.

Anyways, we can agree to disagree. For me, the simple knowledge that these are Japanese characters is enough to trigger a disconnect.

>>1900826
It's probably due to personal feelings based on reading a lot of light novels and Japanese books and stuff. Modern 1st world countries may be similar, but East Asia in general tends to have more similarities culturally with each other than with Western culture. Honestly I feel like a lot of characters are really disconnected from their roots, which doesn't sit well with me.

Disclaimer that I am also of Korean descent, so these discrepancies may stick out to me more because of that.
>>
>>1900856
I think it's very easy for anyone to look at their culture being presented by someone else and think "hey, that's not us!" without really giving it much critical thought.

Ultimately, you have to accept that you don't, and can't possibly, know every corner and facet of your country to stubbornly believe that something like Tokyo Intermezzo can never, ever happen somewhere near home.

T.I still felt too American to me at times, but I think what made me ultimately lose interest in the subject was the simple fact that I just wasn't that into that particular pairing. Had it been Luka and Miku in that story, I probably would have stuck around.
>>
>>1900821
It just seemed like a rather pointless part of it to take issue with. Would it be preferable if I rephrased it?
>Does anyone else find that most anime and manga fic set in Japan, or at least a magical fantasy Japan, no matter how well written and in character, always feels off because it's written from too much of a Western sensibility?
I actually considered phrasing it like that in the beginning anyway, but I had hoped most people would be able to understand what I was getting at without me having to phrase it like an exam question.
>>
>>1900784
But I already speak English ;_; I did start learning and was really dedicated at first, but between one thing and another sort of drifted away from it over the summer. I think I got discouraged as well because I didn't feel like I was really getting anywhere significant, but I probably wasn't putting enough time in to the right parts either.

>>1900793
I think part of the problem is how much doujinshi I have read, though I'm limited to stuff that's been translated, and a few Japanese fics that I've found translated over the years. There's often such a gap between Japanese and Western characterisation and interpretation of the text in them that I then find it bothers me when I go and read fic, either breaking my immersion completely or making me wonder if it's really 'right'.

And then certain ideas become ingrained in fandoms which may be completely out of tune with the original work, but once you've read a lot of fic you don't notice any more - though that's something that happens in all fandoms, Eastern and Western, as far back as Xena fic I've read.

>>1900826
I haven't read TI so I have no opinion there, but I reject the notion that global culture has become homogeneous enough for the differences to be negligible in fiction. Ireland, Britain and America all speak English and watch each others tv shows and films, and read each others books, but if you ever visit another one there's still significant differences between each of them and in turn we're much more similar to each other than we would be to any Asian countries.

I think what really made me notice the difference was reading some Nip Mai Hime fic that was translated years ago and how Natsuki in particular behaved was so different from how she was always written in English fic that it stuck with me ever since and the more I've learned over the years that more I've noticed the disparity.

I still read pretty much everything I can though.

I like to recommend Overlady if you don't mind a REALLY slow build up to the romance and are fond of Overlord (the vidya about conquering shit with goblins, not the vidya animu) and Familiar of Zero. It's pretty funny but the overall plot is basically Louise dealing with the fallout of her not being around to solve the problems of the plot of the original anime, becoming an evil overlady, and being really fucking deep in the closet.

she's in a state of conflicted feelings at the moment. It's hard to explain without being spoilery outside of what is needed to describe the fic.
>>
>>1934371

>>
>>1934375
At the moment it seems she'll only end up with one mistress. The specifics of why are spoilers.

Though i will warn that there is sorta a het romantic interest but it's kinda doubtful it'll go anywhere beyond friendship, given the amount of attention the yuri ship is given.
>>
>>1934383
>sorta a het romantic interest
I'm not that surprised considering the actual show is close to a harem anime. However as long as the mistress wins, everything will be right with the world.
This may or may not be influenced by love for the Overlord series and how not many crossovers get above 100k.
>>
>>1934393
The overlord series is pretty great. Though I should also note that it's only influence is the Minion and Gnarl. There's a different history of Overlording worked into the FoZ's setting and the games themselves aren't really involved.

Also it seems probable that the Mistress will win. Assuming the law of conservation of detail means shit.
>>
>>1934398
The humor in the fic could be in the vein of the Overlord series as well, though that might be a stretch since I haven't read it.
Here's to hoping that the Mistress wins.

There's a situation in the early chapters where it is decidedly yuri but Louise is in denial and freaks out.
It starts showing signs in the thirties and in the forties, however it's better to read it if you're a fan of the Overlord series since it helps make everything flow better. At least in getting to the yuri.
It's a nice fic all in all but the yuri isn't a centralized element. Might be when the story advances some more though.

You done fucked up the spoilers.

Though I will say that for people who care about their time and are concerned with the length of the fic, you might want to stay away if you're just in it for the yuri as we're at one-sided feelings stage right now and it's not likely to change all too soon.

However if you don't mind the wait, and/o if you like the humor from Overlord, then I'd say read it.

Agent Carter has a lot of fic for a purely subtext ship, Person of Interest has some good stuff but the characters are fairly hard to get right and the relationship is canon so it's one where you might be better served just watching. The 100 is canon and has a large fic base, canon and AU, same with Carmilla, the webseries. A simple search for f/f category fics on ao3 sorted by kudos will get you a bunch of results from these fandoms and SQ first up.

So when does this get /u/? I'm 35 chapters in and there's not even a single, teeny tiny sight of it so far unless you count the early jokes about Louise kidnapping maidens, which disappeared like 20 chapters ago anyway. Granted there's not been much het either but it seems to pop up in conversations more and more in recent chapters so it's not exactly encouraging reading.

This isn't anons doing a Mugino thing and reading bizarrely large amounts of subtext into jokes and friendship is it? Because rather than a case of 'possible het LI and possible /u/ LI' this really feels like 'so het it isn't even scared to make /u/ jokes' so far, a la lame harem series.

If you're at 35 chapters in, you should be able to see the beginning of the thus far one-sided yuri. It gets stronger in the chapters coming up, as well as more amusing.

>>
>>1950639
Well, I've been writing that one for years and I don't have an editor, so a few errors are sure to get through.

And writing a story strictly for the sake of one character's relationship with another is a sign of bad writing. You're writing toward a point rather than writing a story and that's bad, mmkay?
>>
>>1950587
>I admit nothing.

>>1950642
>writing a story strictly for the sake of one character's relationship with another is a sign of bad writing. You're writing toward a point rather than writing a story and that's bad, mmkay?
I get what you mean about the criticism of writing toward a point but come now, that's just elitism for the sake of elitism, surely. A relationship can be a story in itself, hell, a snapshot of a single second can be a story.

There will probably be more people that pick this one up knowing it might lead in a more /u/ direction but can't blame people in this thread for looking for that kind of thing specifically. We already mostly know what we want in terms of general and/or het content outside of here (and so much of the time, general usually comes to be het anyway).
>>
>>1950642
>And writing a story strictly for the sake of one character's relationship with another is a sign of bad writing
I wouldn't say it's strictly a sign of bad writing. At least for anything short of a longfic. Having focus in a story is preferable over stories that just devolve into clusterfucks of drama.

It's bad writing when the relationship falls into an isolated bubble of plot without good reason. Friends/family/associates/enemies of the couple should be used in the lifespan of the relationship. This is especially true for any pairing that could find controversy in the setting of the work.

I don't think that writing to a point is necessarily bad either. Having an endgame in mind can be beneficial as long as one is willing to be flexible with the route they take to that point.
>>
>>1950653
Well, there was a reason I didn't really want to post it here yet - it's not at that part of the story. It's 170,000 words long at this point and we're only up to the chunin exams. It's just a fun little time to begin nudging things into a romantic direction for Sakura.
>>
>>1950642
I was just pointing out the error so it could be fixed. I liked what I read, for the record.

>writing a story strictly for the sake of one character's relationship with another is a sign of bad writing
This implies that I'm only interested in bad stories, so obviously I'm going to disagree.

I'd say it's only a sign of bad writing if your intention was to write a more expansive story. If your goal in the first place was to write a simple story that was focused on a single point, then it's entirely possible for the result to be well-written and entertaining. The intent of the author is the key variable here.

If the audience is led to believe that it's a broad story but the author intends to deliver a focused story then that's just false advertising.

If an author intends to write a complex story and advertises it as such, but delivers a focused story instead, then that's probably what people mean when they say a story is "pretentious". I've always hated that word because it's so badly-defined, thus this has been productive.

>>1950668

>>
>>1950668
There are swathes of this board that are dedicated to topics that are barely anything more than teasing hints and near-crack shipping. >>
>>1950684
The reaction was hardly out for blood and I felt that the fic being a slow build was emphasized quite clearly. Not to mention clarifications of the starting points of when it becomes more /u/ relevant are present if you follow the reply chains.
>>
>>1950684
>Overlady was linked here
Huh, fancy that. I found it linked somewhere else a while ago, it's pretty fun, though it drags sometimes.

The yuri subtext (overtext?) with Louise's sister is the best part. You don't really that sort of thing in fanfics, usually the gay relationships are front and center, instead of being teased over dozens of chapters at varying levels of comedy.

Any good Disney ones that aren't Elsa/Anna
>>
>>1952410
There's a difference between slow burn and not knowing if it's gonna show up at all. I'm sure anons don't mind slow burn at all if the result is guaranteed or near enough. If it's very much questionable, though, it's gonna create a different reaction - even if many anons love stories for other reasons, even ones without any /u/ at all, those aren't really relevant to the thread.

In general, author confirmation will dispel all worries regardless of how the story looks, while even the most teasing story without a confirmed romance will be viewed critically, doubly so if it's long as fuck. Because people who enjoy the stories for their own merit and not because of the romance, even if they visit this thread, probably are discussing it other places.
>>
>>1952443
One could also apply law of conservation of detail to fics. At least to the better ones. All the attention that is given to Louise's denial about her attraction to Henrietta makes it feel like it's going to happen. Plus there are a few suspiciously specifically worded sentences, and an understanding of Overlord's characters/plot makes it reasonable to believe that there is an interest outside of the couple itself to see the two together.. Even if Overlord's actual plot isn't even present in the fic's combined universe.

Now to be fair, the person doesn't use a beta out of laziness and it's been a while since I've read it but it holds up from what I can recall.
The author also has quite a few Bella/Denali girl ones though those are up in the air. I think I've read the Bella/Kate and Bella/Tanya one and they were okay. I didn't really have expectations outside of just wanting something long, unusual couple, and enough skill that I could unconsciously filter out the slight mistake or two I read over.

Yeah it's real stupid though why it stuck specifically for that pairing probably has to do with their usage/exploration of figuring out what transfiguration can do. Some of the deeper MinveraMione fics speculate that it could lead some quantum/nuclear processes via magic or very dangerous in the vein of transfiguring an artery into thread or something.

>I've waited years for the story, "Strangers Together" from fictionpress to update, maybe four, five months ago the author said they will some day come back to it but hasn't touched it in years.

>It's about a human, sheltered princess being arranged marriage to a young Elven Queen in a far away land.

Has great world building and story but once you've read it you might become infected with the need to fill that void. I've yet to come across a story be it /lit/ related or fan-fiction/press related with a Human Woman and a Elven/Mystical Queen/Princess story and have wonderful building.

There was a book I read once with a human/banished elf princess pairing, starts promising but goes shit fast.

Lol, ouch.

What was the fic you liked that's gone? Now I want to know if it's something I liked and if so, can I bum it off you.
>>
>>1955887
How I Met Your Mother.
It had nothing to do with the shitty series, except maybe the vaguest of ideas.
I don't know why I responded to that Twilight post, must have forgot to delete the link. The fic was for Frozen. I can dig it out if you want.

>>1956286
Oh, sorry then. Not a Frozen fan, thought it might have been Alice/Bella.

My anxiety was so bad I couldn't even log into my account, but by the time it passed I didn't care anymore so I was like, let them read terrible fic! Though I actually really like the last two things I wrote and I want to continue them but I never want to be associated with that account again even though no one remembers me. Whoops?

The solution is elegant: write fanfiction of your fanfiction. Just blatently steal the previous concept and go forward guns blazing.

On a only somewhat related note, one day I'm going to fix that one elsa fic where the story does a complete 360 at the precipice of the climax and moonwalks into a sudden and sloppy ending where elsa conveniently gets maneuvered into everything she could have wanted with no logical reasons, control from her or obvious concequences. Fuck that shit. How can someone fuck up such a simple premise which literally writes itself and has to be only followed through to the inevidable bad end?
Forever mad.

The solution is to first look at a ton of fanart. With a bit of luck, you'll start seeing the characters from your favorite drawings.

>Seriously, rot your teeth sugary fluff all over that fandom.
I might need to get into that asap. Every fandom I try lately is bleak and angsty shit.

It's easy to say you're going to write something but then get stuck. I'm in that boat right now.

Something similar happened to me, except it was a smut fic I found with just the right mix of childhood destroying goodness and hot girl on girl action. Luckly, this was back when I was on a bend about saving all the porn I found instead of just bookmarking it, so I think I might still have it somewhere.

elsa is suffering
If you haven't read it:
be advised, it's awful, though at one point it isn't far from being almost not a complete waste of everyone's fucking time

Right, it's crap, but it doesn't have to be. I even made this scientific graph to illustrate how suffering went wrong. I'm not really a scientist, though, so the graph might be less than perfect.

Angst can be good and satisfying. It only needs a premise with a plausibly inherent tragedy and a competent execution. The suspense here isn't whether or how our hero triumphs in face of adversity, but in the futile struggle to reach the impossible goals they have set for themselves. There is never any doubt about the certainty of a bad end, but the thrill is in the fight, in the small victories and the setbacks against the ever-present tension of the hopelessness looming over everything.
>Why do we rise, Bruce, only for us to inevitably fall again?
The climax isn't going to be their brightest moment but their darkest hour when they fall from the very heights they fought so hard to reach. Though it's not the fall that kills but the landing and this can be a rewarding and a memorable character defining moment.

The premise of suffering has it all. A broken girl in love with her sister - there's never going to be a happy end for that. Even if she'd get the girl, she'd be still banging her sister which is all kinds of fucked however one were look at it. Doing the right thing is hurting them both and keeping them miserable. All that's needed is a sliver of hope to get the snowball rolling and riding the avalanche down to the village at the bottom of the valley.
>>
>>1957531
Where suffering fails fundamentally is the execution. The beginning is aimless rambling setting up the same premise and characters over and over again. Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, it finds its feet in middle. The plot starts almost dancing to the proper beat. There's gauntlet set up between her and her goal and she steps forward. She triumphs, she falters, she falls, she rises and she soldiers on. It's great. Then she's at the greatest hurdle, the insurmountableness of which rests upon the very founding logic of the story itself. This is the pivotal moment where she must fall, answer for her deeds and truly face herself at the bottom. And it's robbed from her. All the other characters stand up, start clapping and congratulate her and bend backwards to accommodate her. Even the character of Elsa itself is baffled by all of this and goes through the rest of the story as a passive piece only witnessing all the frantic and last-minute shuffling around her. And then it just ends on an 'Okay then?'

I... You kinda put a lot of thought into it.
I only gave it a passing glance because everyone was talking about it like it was the hottest shit ever, but I'll never trust again. The whole premise was shitty from the get go - while it's nice to see a flawed character, it's not particularly interesting if the whole story is an exercise in self-flagellation.
>>
>>1957536
It was hot shit because it was sort of everybody's or 'our' collective brainchild. Hence the disjointed nature of the first chapters. Elsa and suffering was initially made by (a segment of) 4chins for (a segment of) 4chins (that there is overlap with tumblr and who knows what else or that the story took on a life of its own is irrelevant at the moment). The premise is simple and relatable (for a segment) - she's alone togather and pining for an impossible waifu and she knows it - and the angst is logical and rational.

I apologise in advance for blogging.
>>
>>1957753
It doesn't really decend into self-flagellation since that would imply that she'd would go around hurting as many people as possible so she can blame more and more stuff on herself and derive more and more pleasure from punishing herself for it. In the story, an the premise especially, she's actively trying to minimise and contain the circle of hurt. Not because it feels good, but because it's logical and rational.

The self-hurt(ing?) itself shouldn't be a problem since it's a natural part of the premise, it's not something the author has invented and made up and added to the premise just because
>angst, yo
It can still be a problem when the author doesn't employ it organically and it becomes repetetive, tiresome and overt and again something that exists for its own sake.

In the premise, however, it's justifiable. Elsa is a logical and a rational (to an extent rigidly so) person with moral upbringing. She knows what's considered right and wrong, that her feelings certainly aren't normal. She can't blame Anna since she's completely innocent and pure in Elsa's eyes and certainly isn't guilty of seducing Elsa. As a logical and a rational person, that leaves only one culprit for Elsa to blame - herself. And she hates herself for being unable to stop the taint, the wrongness, she sees this as a fundamental weakness, a sure sign of her ingrained depravity, wickedness, because otherwise she'd be able to overcome this whole thing. But her morals and rationality won't let her embrace it either. That would mean not only failing herself even more but also every person and ideal important to her. She can't do that. Not because she's got a martyr complex or a thing for BDSM, but because she's a fundamentally good person in an impossible situation.
>>
>>1957754
So she does the only rational and logical thing she can think of - that which causes the least amount of hurt to everyone. She tries curing herself by isolating herself from the temptaion. This backfires as Anna is hurt and now Elsa feels guilty and again can't help but feel justified hating - she would hate the kind of person who couldn't even more - the source of that hurt - herself. And she's angry at her the world -
>She's trying so hard! How can doing the whole thing feel so shitty? Are the morals she's been thought wrong?
and at herself -
>No! That would imply that her parents are wrong and that's just not possible. Also, Anna is completely normal. So it has to be her, it's always ultimately her fault. She can't shift the blame.

So, by the beginning of the story she's got a lot of hate and anger directed at herself. As she sees this as completely justified and necessary and inevitable. This manifests as anger, self-hate, self-depreciation, self-doubt, anxiety, isolation, asocial dendencies. Flagellation doesn't really come into play. It's not something she derives pleasure from nor even something she has a choice in. She wants to have a way out but she can't see an acceptable one. That's why she is quick to go down any rabbithole with even a slight promise of absolution from all the hate and anger and guilt. In the end she just wants to be normal.

I still think it's moronic misery wank and to read it in full one has to exhibit masochistic tendencies.
>blogging
Didn't you have a thousand threads for that?
>>

>it's moronic misery wank
As the story is now, yeah, probably to a degree, though I'd argue its failings are more niuanced than that as it ultimately fails at misery as well. The premise, however, has potential to be so much more. It's just that the, well, not the author, the writer couldn't pull it off.

>to read it in full one has to exhibit masochistic tendencies
Ehh. As valid as saying that stating that requires requires some level of faggotry.

>Didn't you have a thousand threads for that?
Pardon ?
Should I've apologiesed for a wall of text instead? I think I should have. Welp.
