There were just enough hints that it could happen without being a total asspull, but at the same time, not so many that it was Aang/Katara level foreshadowing. They could have done it, or they could have not done it, and there was enough evidence that either path would have been supported.

Apparently there's a debate on Korras wikipedia page whether Asami should be listed under 'Significant Other' as 'Girlfriend' or not. It's been edited and revised a bit and at the moment it seems they are waiting for some kind of confirmation before adding it.

All this debate, especially on sites like wikipedia, worries me. What we have now is to most of
us a pretty obvious canon relationship but the lack of outright explicit declaration of love leaves Nickelodeon and Bryke with plausible deniability. which is there in case this shit blows out of proportion and will be used. It makes me worry that if pressed Bryke/Nickelodeon will simply explain it away as platonic.

The cynic in me held my breath until they actually stepped into the portal and turned to each other. At first the scene with Mako obviously made me worry, especially with Korras reaction and that camera panning. Then I thought the scene with Tenzin showing how Korras had grown etc. would be the last one. Then after my worry that they would take a group vacation had been cleared I couldn't even help myself from thinking that in those last seconds before they enter, Bolin and co. would suddenly appear and 'join in' as a surprise or some shit.

Sakura Trick was great from a progressive standpoint, but not so great from a plot standpoint. In all fairness, it was only slightly better than a generic harem. It was incredibly sexual, but lazy. Our real Yuri Heroines will come with backbones resembling the women of the Avatar universe and relationships that aren't all about titillation and pleasure.

Even as subtle/not-paraded as Korra & Asami's relationship is, I am very elated.
