Relatively unknown ones:

Stalingrad (1993)

My favorite war movie of all time is probably A Very Long Engagement.

The Iraq War ruined war films and will probably ruin them for the next 25 years. Instead of war being studied as an analysis of the best and worst of man in the most strenuous of environments, it will be instead basically be cop movies but instead of arresting gangbangers and seizing drugs, it's just insurgents and disarming IEDs. Fuck this gay earth.

I thought that the Hurt Locker was really good.
I recently watched it for the second time.
Why did you guys hate it?
>>
What do you guys think of Flags of our Fathers?

Also, not movies but Band of Brothers and The Pacific are GOAT
>>
>>65114473
>Stalingrad(1993)
Was expecting raw rattenkrieg worst of humanity kind of deal, what I got was "ve vaz humans too, ve feel". also there's a girl out of fucking nowhere there and it ruins the immersion. Fuck that lieutenant, a useless piece of shit.
>Hamburger hill
Literally feel guy platoon must capture the hill: the movie. Everyone has a cliche sad story to tell, "muh racism, muh high school sweat heart broke up with me through a letter, muh I just want to live through this, muh vietnamese are real people with feelings too"

Haven't seen the other two.

I would recomend: The Lost Battalion, a movie made for tv but it is pretty solid. About world war 1.
>>

I'm not that contrarian. But I thought the bomb inside the kid's guts was over the top and heavy-handed. Minus this scene it's your god-tier.
>>
>>65114707
I think the idea of an unseen enemy could work well for a war film, not in the traditional sense though. Would rather people move onto Korea or even some bullshit after but not 2003+ iraq.

Band of Brothers: GOAT
The Pacific: not so GOAT

>>65114888
>Letters From Iwo Jima

Did anybody felt that it was unintentionally funny at times? like when that guy died of dysentery? One moment he was making funny faces and jokingly telling the other jap about poop and then next day he dies. I don't know what kind of emotion were they trying to provoke with that. There's other stuff there that is awkwardly funny.

How was The Hurt Locker not an analysis of man at his best or worst in terms of Renner's character? He was essentially addicted to war.

>>
Joyeux Noel
>>
>>65114968
I didn't hate it, but it wasn't really good. I'm not sure why I'm supposed to root for Renner's character? A reckless man who constantly put others in peril. They sort of just brush over the whole PTSD with a wish to die part of it, never really explore his emotions and why he acts the way he does. They also rush the ending, never really gets into why he feels uncomfortable back home and so on. Also, from what I've heard it's pretty unaccurate about how it is to serve overseas in the US army. Not that I would know never having been in the army, let alone the american army. 5/10.

Why should you? Is it a some kind of requirement for a movie that the main character hast to be 'le good guy'?
>>
>>65114324
Hurt Locker was good entertainment. Solid on the thrills and good on the message. But for god-tier you need more; things like originality and attitude.
>>
>>65115547
I didn't say that. But I thought it was very clear that you were supposed to like him, then sort of dislike him and then feel sorry for him. I just never cared for him in any way. He wasn't very interesting.

Again, I didn't say that. Maybe I was unclear. I just felt like they set him up to be a good guy, eho sort of avts like an asshole, but in the end you're supposed to feel sorry for him. And they didn't really do anything. His character just felt tired, clichéd and phoned in.

Yes, and then they try to make him seem cool and interesting before they attempt at making you feel sorry for him.
>>
>>65115852

It's a completely different animal than BOB in that it's more focused on how turning attention to the brutality of the Pacific theater than a tight group of recruits. I'd say it has a fairly weak beginning but it hits it stride when they give more attention to Sledgehammer and SNAFU.

Letters from Iwo Jima was great.

I also recommend My Way, more because its entertaining and interesting than good really. Fictionalized story of the Korean wehrmact soldier captured at Dday.

Taegukji is SK propaganda, but pretty good war movie and not enough Korean war films.

I remember one time they passed it on TV and I could not watch it, for Christian Bale was dubbed by the voice who dubs Seth Rogen
>>
>>65117097
What kind of a third-world country dubs live-action movies? Absolutely disgusting.
>>
>>65117296
Every civilized country (but Russia).
Italian dubs are very good usually, The Godfather has a better Marlon Brando, Ass Creed 2 IT dub is better, Max Payne 1 at least has it better because Mc Caffrey sounds the same in everything he says (in MP1 only though), The Gladiator, when he says Unleash hell, everyone who meets the guy who dubbed it asks him to repeat it.

It was a matter of a wrong casting call and direction, some people can get the best or the worst out of a good actor.
>>
>>65114507
This. both extremely mediocre generic Oscar bait shit.

>>65114528
Sorry kid. There are actually people here who care about movies and don't mindlessly like whatever was nominated for awards.

This post contains actual memorable, remarkable war movies:
>>65114572
>>
>>65115608
Renner and Mackie were both completely flat with a generic, cliched relationship. Just stereotypes of particular sorts of people who might be in the military. That's why they have no effect on someone, and in large part why Hurt Locker is ultimately unremarkable, to a viewer who's seen more than a few movies.

Bigelow doesn't really do anything well except action scenes.

It sure is. Nothing like watching the Yanks getting their arses handed to them by a load of 'savages'. And this was the 'assisted by the Military' version. Imagine if they'd have actually shown how shit the Americans are when they can't just bomb the fuck out of 'da enemy'.
>>
>>65115396
Some good points.
Just imagine how it is to live in a God-fearing, military revering part of the US, end up in the military, in a war you've been spoon fed into believing is necessary, being made to view pretty much everything as a target, then come home to a 'normal' life? What would that be after that?
