The non stop action, not enough alone time with Max to get to know his character. IIRC in the original movies there was a sense of deep solitude, this one had too much other people, especially girls with their girl power.
I did like it though, the swamp marshland scene was very memorable, despite being short.

>>65046169 Literally nothing. Just about a perfect action film. It's almost a perfectly structured film, stripped down to the frame. It is incredibly well edited, and the pacing is almost instantly propulsive, with just enough of a lull in the action to allow the audience time to recuperate and appreciate the next set piece or action sequence.
The protagonist characters are dynamic and flawed and we're invested in their plight, and the antagonist characters manage to be monstrous and human and we understand how they're justifying their behavior all at the same time. And all of this with as little unnecessary expositional dialogue as possible.
As a chase film, it has just about the absolute ideal plot beats, where the character arcs are naturally expressed through the necessity of the plot. We run away from the monsters to an idealized place that we believe will save us, realize that no longer exists, and we realize that the ideal solution to the characters dilemma is to go back, quit running, and risk it all in an attempt to make what we had better, and defeat the people that made it worse in the first place.
As a car flick, it has some of the most creative, badass fucking vehicles ever put on film. Some of the best production design in contemporary filmmaking, to say the least.
It is definitely at the high water mark that productions should aspire to, in terms of utilizing practical stunts and effects that are supplemented with CGI.
So when edgy contrarians on /tv/ ask "what went wrong?" The question is seemingly self-directed. Anonymously talking shit using self-important talking points and I-took-a-film-studies-class-in-high-school arguments about well-received, good movies doesn't reflect poorly on the movies. It just makes the cancer worse.

>>65047515 With that many people around him throughout the entire movie you'd expect to get to know him better from a different 'social' angle, through interaction with all those people, like how would he behave in a group. Not a bad idea. Even if he doesn't talk much he can still have presence and character and express himself through non verbal communication, none of which was possible with a horde of grills fucking around all the time and the jj abrams style "non stop action". You can't even judge Tom Hardy's acting skills because he WASN'T IN THE FUCKING MOVIE.
>>65048136 Why was it even rated R in the first place? It sounded like an appealing bullet point before I saw the movie but it didn't have much blood or gore and the only time you saw nudity was the bait woman in the distance.
The violence felt pretty conservative. They should have went whole hog with it or just cut it to be a PG 13.
There are two kinds of movies you dislike. One is the movie where you can perceive its merits, but for whatever reason it just isn't your cup of tea. Maybe it's an action movie, and you prefer mysteries. Maybe it's a mystery, and you prefer horror. Maybe it's a movie you could have liked, but it stars someone you find intolerably annoying. Whatever it is, it's good for someone else, just not for you.
The other type of movie is the one where you can't even wrap you mind around what ANYONE could possibly see in it. It's not just wrong for you, it's wrong overall. It's wrong period. This is one of those movies.
I watched "Mad Max: Fury Road" with two other people. After the first ten minutes, I had a sinking feeling, but the others were more hopeful that it would improve soon. More than an hour in, my opinion was set in stone, and their hope was starting to falter. By the time the credits rolled, we were all in agreement that this was the worst movie we have seen this year, and one of the worst mainstream movies we have ever seen.
On a scale of 1 to 10, the best that I could possibly give this is a 3, and that is entirely due to its technical competence, i.e. the film quality was good, the effects were solid, there was no 60Hz buzz leaking into the audio, I didn't notice a boom mike making its way into the final edit, etc.
And that 3 is a maximum. Honestly, I feel a 2 is more appropriate. But when I look over the demographics on IMDb, I see that only about one person out of 30 gave it a rating in the 1 to 3 range. The other 29 liked it more than seems possible to me having seen it.
And I'm not talking about an insignificant sample size, here. This is based on about 400,000 votes! Hell, it's made its way onto the damn Top-250 List, and typically harsh Metacritic has it at a whopping 89 out of 100!
Had I not already concluded it from copious other evidence stretching back decades, this alone would likely be enough for me to determine that mankind is broken as a species. To project such merit onto what amounts to a 2-hour car chase makes about as much sense as would "Twilight" winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" is filled with people who not only don't behave like people, but in fact don't even behave like animals. There are certain basic behaviors common to all higher lifeforms, and one of these is their reaction to scarcity. When an important resource such as food is scarce, one seeks to secure their share of it (and perhaps more if it's not perishable) before tending to other, less scarce necessities. Evolution has programmed us this way because those who failed to prioritize scarce resources had a much higher likelihood of their bloodline dying off due to hunger, malnutrition, thirst, exposure, etc.
>>65048744 Humans often display this drive when shopping. For example, how many people in the Black Friday shopping rush enter an electronics store and head straight for the batteries? Or the cables? The answer is none, because everyone knows that those will be readily available long after the five HDTVs currently on sale are spoken for.
But for some reason, everyone in this movie has forgotten even such basic animal drives. When a resource is scarce, they find various arbitrary ways to waste it. And I don't mean in general, but specifically to waste their own share of it. It is one thing to waste the enemy's gasoline by rupturing his gas tank during combat, as this is a trade-off between short term power and long term energy, and can thus be justified. But it is something else entirely to spill your own limited supply simply because you are a poor guitarist.
Similarly, the water released unto the crowds by the King of the Mimes near the start of the movie is a remarkable waste. It alludes to certain religious fictions about grain distribution, but the key difference here is that grain doesn't immediately sink irretrievably into the soil like water does, which suggests that the author was putting the style cart way ahead of the logic horse.
>>65048779 Assuming that this release of zillions of gallons of potable water onto the ground is a regular occurrence, and that this is the only source of water for the brain-dead hordes that live there, we can then conclude via the anthropic principle that it would have to happen at least every three days, if not more often. Taken over time, the resulting average rate of water flow could simply be routed through a small, narrow spigot (with no handle) which would run continuously 24 hours a day, like a water bubbler with a broken valve. Any time anyone wanted some, they could come by and fill up a container, and the rest of the time it would dribble pathetically onto the ground. Even with no ability to turn it off, the percentage of water reaching the people before it reaches the ground would still be considerably higher. (This would be more wasteful than having a means to shut it off when not in use, but it would still be far better than the farce portrayed in this film.)
In summary, no, I didn't like the movie. And I'm confused beyond words that so many people did. It feels as if the universe is playing a prank, and I'm the only one that isn't in on the joke. :
>>65048386 >Calling anything with female characters in it SJW shit. >Calling Fury Road SJW shit. I don't give a flying fuck about SJWs. And I'm not on the defense. >>65048819 This. Not to mention even if someone's whole criticism is "muh feminism", Furiosa is objectively one of the least feminist, least annoying female co-stars in action movie history. There's not one scene where she makes Max look stupid, kicks his ass or has some witty one-liners to show how much better women are or any shit like that, which you can usually find in tons of other action movies.
>Incredible cinematography >Incredible visual and audio design >Real vehicles, real stunts, minimal use of CGI >Very tight and well written script >Memorable characters, especially the villains >Great mythology >Doesn't use stupid exposition or over explain things, it shows and doesn't tell
>>65049153 Stop being such a pathetic sheep and think for yourself. If you saw this exact movie 10 years ago without having read any of these MRA articles beforehand, the thought of feminism wouldn't even cross your mind.
we've come so far that max eats double-headed lizards and turns into sir gruntsalot without even for one second matching the charismatic performance mels delivered with his interpretation over 30 years ago
what a wonder also that whereas in road warrior everyone was hunting for gas because it was so rare and precious here this seems to be not an issue. even less so considering that the villain has a party bus in his entourage with a freak who plays a flame-shooting guitar. and all of the characters drive through the desert for days because re-fuiling is of no concern. gasoline seems to exist aplenty. water not so much, therefore the baddie advises not to get addicted to it. like you can go without i
the digital look of the film, combined with its us of CGI, makes it easily the ugliest film in the series maybe even of this year. the plot a plot? is basically non-existent and where it shimmers through (like zoe kravitz nipples through her shirt) it just proves to be ludicrous, in a film that feels like three hours because it's that repetitive. this is man of shit all over again: one action scene that we have to watch over and over and over. they're driving, shooting, explosions, driving, explosions, shooting, driving, shooting, explosions. after 45 minutes I struggled to keep my eyes open and awake due to it's lack of anything interesting
maybe miller should return to making animated films about dancing penguins
>>65049302 I really hope you're real m8. I'm always fascinated by people with personality disorders, and this is some top quality kek. Have you been diagnosed yet? >oh look at furiosa kick ass, did you see how even max acknowledged she is a badass and gave her the rifle to take that last shot? what a feminist role model and strong female character >later max walks out on his own into the dark with pretty much nothing and takes out at least one vehicle, causing it to explode, killing all the passengers and carrying back vital supplies and ammunition while the women just stand around waiting for him. >oh did you see that strong female character on the bike at the end? she fucked some guys up and even when she crashed she kept fighting those bad men, she only died because she got run over from behind, they were too scared to take her on face to face >oh look at furiosa be a badass and drive that war rig while fighting off a few guys, and people think women cant drive >max continues to jump from vehicle to vehicle, crawling in front of the war rig to spit the fuel into the engines, cuts the harpoons in the back, takes a crossbow bolt through the hand, hijacks another vehicle and takes it out, continually stops guys from getting to furiosa
>>65049535 >A feminist literally rewrote the script
Source? All we know is there was a feminist amongst many consultants. That feminist apparently was consulted because of her work in middle eastern countries where women are being used as sex slaves and breeding machines, like they are in the movie.
>>65049535 >There wasn't a script. >A feminist advised on how best to write the sex slave characters. Must be tough being so oppressed by everything brah. >>65049591 >>65049594 One person isn't familiar with the sniper rifle. One person is. MUH FEMINISM!!!!!

>>65049698 Men shouldn't help women. They are the enemy. The "if we all respect and help each other we can all succeed" message is inherently propaganda. The natural state of the world is that men should rule over women. We are smarter, stronger, braver, greater artists.
>>65049219 >>Incredible cinematography cinematography meme >>Incredible visual and audio design some of the vehicles look cool. that's about it. >>Real vehicles, real stunts, minimal use of CGI whenever something happens it looks fake. they didn't even bother making the spray paint look real and the constant use of the fast motion thing looks like shit. >>Very tight and well written script very sparse and not written >>Memorable characters, especially the villains the only character that even has an arch is Nux. max's is literally "i will not help them" --> "i will help them!" >>Great mythology typical "let's just make up a bunch of bs that makes no sense the masses won't know the difference and think it's cool" >>Doesn't use stupid exposition or over explain things, it shows and doesn't tell they drive down the road and drive back. very interesting stuff.
>>65049591 What's wrong with letting the better sniper take the shot? How insecure in your manliness do you have to be that you think any time a woman shows competence in something that surpasses your own, she's castrating you? Furiosa was the better sniper, Max was the better fighter. Those are some very traditional gender roles for fantasy and fiction. The agile and calm woman and the strong and heroic man.
>>65049792 The very suggestion that the female would be more skilled at that task that the warrior gender is inherently offensive. Man would be the better Sniper AND the better fighter. We're supposed to believe that one of the all time great male action icons can't aim a fucking gun but a leftist female can? It is a scene of male weakness and a submission to the female. I won't stand for it.
>>65049709 So what's the deeper meaning where Max overpowers Furiosa, mounts her, has her completely at his mercy and shoots a bunch of rounds into the ground next to her head, after which she completely surrenders?
>>65049867 A female that grew up under a crazy warlord and used to be one of his commanding officers, in a world where other women are ruled over as slaves. Surely she must have had something going for her to have escaped that fate.
>>65050033 Nice try, but symbolically, he clearly established his dominance in that scene and the woman remembers it throughout the rest of the movie, while never holding a grudge against him or getting him back for it either.
>>65050113 >Why do you think a dude that never shot that rifle before I've never held a gun in my life, but I'd be a better shot with that rifle that any woman. It is in my genetics. Can you imagine Mel Gibson being outclassed by a female at a male activity? Never would have happened.
>>65050088 In that case, the 2 previous Mad Max movies, alongside pretty much every movie ever made are all feminist propaganda as well. Action hero teaming up with badass eyecandy female is as old as the genre itself, you raging homosexual.
>>65046169 There's nothing wrong with it, but it's literally an action flick. The new Mission Impossible movie is on the same level. The only difference is that Mad Max includes feminist pandering so its eligible for muh critical acclaim, brilliant work of art, etc.
>>65050163 He starts off by overpowering the female with his superior male strength (even the feminists wouldn't dare push the meme that men are women are physically equal in media made for consumption outside of their hugbox) but he eventually comes to care for them and trades in his dominance for submissiveness. He learns to serve Furiosa which ends up giving the people at the citadel a better quality of life. What is the message here? That men should look past their physical superiority over a women and serve them. Then we will have a happier society.
>>65050200 >I've never held a gun in my life >but I'd be a better shot... >It is in my genetics Holy shit the jokes just keep coming. Playing vidya isn't genetic you indoorsy faggot. And there's a learning curve with ANY new scoped gun, regardless of whether you've fired tons before. Holy shit being this self-important.
This is a goof right? This has to be a goof? 10/10 goof m8
>>65050263 Max works for himself in those movies. Any time he helps a female it is only a means to his own end. > alongside pretty much every movie ever made are all feminist propaganda as well. >>65050476 Max is a pawn in a bigger story that he gets dragged into in every fucking sequel. >I do consider Aliens and Terminator 2 to be propaganda too. Kill yourself. Or at the very least quit pretending that you're not a cartoonishly insecure homosexual. Do us all a favor and suck a dick.
>>65050476 >I do consider Aliens and Terminator 2 to be propaganda too. WHEN DO THEY SMASH THE PATRIARCHY AND INSTALL A FEMALE LEADER OVER A SHITLORD MALE DOMINATED SOCIETY... IN ALIENS AND TERMINATOR 2

>>65050511 >entry-level MRA talking points that anyone can look up >designed to look conveniently irrational and autistic, just as feminists want >faux-triggered, Redditesuqe caps-shouting Yeah man, no false flagging here at all.
>>65049784 This is what i've come to realize about /tv/. The fact is most people here simply do not possess the intelligence required to give a reasonable critique of a movie. Literally all your reasons why you don't like Mad Max aren't actually reasons, you haven't elaborated or let us know what it is you're actually trying to convey. I mean what kind of argument is >Meme cinematography Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously on that? You haven't provided any examples from the movie, Max has a very clear and concise arc. >Trying to survive >Gets captured >Trying to escape >Forced to work with enemy >Doesn't want to make friends because everyone he's tried to help has died >Makes friend anyway and decides to help them You are literally brain dead if you can't understand Mad Max, simple does not always mean bad. Not to mention you can sum up Nux's character arc the exact same way you lazily dealt with Max's
>>65050837 No I fully understand that. You're a homosexual, that much is clear. But you hate that and you hate yourself and you you hate them for giving you those feels. You're almost certainly a gay, you're evidently stupid, and you've a few psychological disorders. That much is clear. But none of your personal hangups have a fucking thing to do with the relative quality of Mad Max: Fury Road. That shit is based. Stop projecting faggot.
>>65050988 Hey I'm all for it being a goof. I certainly hope it is, but I'm pretty confident that at least 1 of these dudes is completely serious. And honestly, it's a bit of an easy scapegoat to say that, instead of the 15-year-old edgefags constantly embarrassing themselves with hyper-simplified, misunderstood MRA talking points across most of 4chan, they're actually "SJW falseflaggers" trying to make MRA's look stupid. That's some Snowball/Emmaniel Goldstein-level delusional shit. Most of them seem way too committed for this to be goof.
The only person that I think is mocking them is >>65050100
>>65049535 There isn't a script for Mad Max fury road you dumbass, it was basically written as a comic-book. They discuss this in length numerous times in the behind the scenes videos.
Also the feminist was a woman who consolted on how it was like to be a sex slave and a breeding machine, which went into the creation of the mother milk women and how the wives had to look. The models had to literally gain weight and stop working out in order to take on the look of a pampered treasure.
>>65052021 >film criticism requires critical thought which you aren't demonstrating any capacity for.
Just because people mock your weak attempt at poopooing a film doesn't make them an "SJW." I don't care about "Social justice," I care about movies. And as you've made perfectly clear, you're making up and parroting film criticism as a way to justify talking shit about a movie that you don't like because MUH FEMINIST OPPRESSION. You want to cry about how women are ruining movies, fine. Go for it. But keep away from actually criticizing the fundamental elements of filmmaking, because you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
>>65046386 As much as I liked this movie this is just false, Max is a minor character along the lines of Nux basically, he's at nowhere near the same level as Furiosa, the actual main character of the film.
>>65054428 >THE RAID HAD STUNTS, YET IT WAS A VAPID FULL RETARD MOVIE JUST LIKE FURIOUS FURIOSA Implying that stunts are the only reason Mad Max is a good film. Nice nonsense comparison and game screenshot btw.
But seriously though. Society cannot thrive without waste disposal. There's no shame in being a garbage man.

Riveting criticism btw. >"Checkpoint oriented" Now THAT is such a sick burn. Only the SHITFLICKs are structured around plot points where characters make forward plot momentum in a series of scenes and sequences driven toward achieving a definable goal, often to run into setbacks that force them to fix a problem or change their goal. That's totally not a plot structure that videogames stole from movies. That's totally not a description of literally every fucking movie ever. >Mad Max wasn't a structureless Buñuel art film, LITERALLY THE WORST.
>BEST PICTURE? L M A O Don't think anyone thinks it'll win best picture. Would be interested in what you think was the best film or should win best picture, and how that isn't "CHECKPOINT ORIENTED."
>>65055793 I would have to reassess my beefs with the Academy Awards if Mad Max actually wins best picture. I think it'll win, but I could imagine Revenant not winning best picture just because Birdman won last year. Bridge of Spies doesn't seem to be too buzzy. Room and Brooklyn and Spotlight were too small probably. Martian may be too reddity. Would be cool if Big Short wins, but it might have too much Adam McKay is a comedy man stank on it. IDK guess it's plausible.

CHECKPOINT. Leo gets attacked by injuns in his sleep, flees on horse, falls off cliff. CHECKPOINT. Leo hides in horse for warmth. CHECKPOINT. Leo makes it back to base. CHECKPOINT. Leo recovers. CHECKPOINT. Leo heads out to find Bane with Gen. Hux. CHECKPOINT. Gen Hux get's killed. CHECKPOINT. Leo devises a trap with Hux's body. CHECKPOINT. Bane falls for the trap and gets confronted by Leo. Boss battle. Bane dies. GAME COMPLETED. If you wanted to draw a plot progression chart like the maymay about Fury Road you posted. You'd draw a line from inciting action to Fort, then a line from Fort to Boss Battle. You'd make an L.
>THIS LAUGHABLE MEME ONLY EXISTS HERE BECAUSE OF THE SHITPOSTING PERSISTENCE OF BUTTPAINED AUSTRALIANS STILL MAD THAT >2015 FEMINISM COOPTED THEIR ONLY NATIONAL MOVIE FRANCHISE SO THEY DEFEND IT BEYOND ALL LOGIC Literally nothing you are saying means anything. Your obsessive persecution delusion of those wicked feminists isn't a valid criticism of the film. Calling it a videogame because you don't understand how story progression works isn't either.
You're so emotional. You'd have been better served by saying something like, "while the film is a technically impressive action film, I disagree with the themes and overall message of the story." Instead you're another hysterical MRA SJW faggot talking out of his ass.

Third act begins when they decide to face their antagonists and retake the Citadel. And you're clearly just parroting things you've heard when you say that it has PACING PROBLEMS. >ITS SIMPLISTIC AND LINEAR But Revenant isn't. Confirmed for know-nothing. >NOT VERY TECHNICALLY IMPRESSIVE, IN FACT. Complains about compositing, favorite film of the year is Revenant. Come on man. I get that you're a desperate tryhard. But tryharder for fucks sake. > AND THATS NOT EVEN TOUCHING ON THE MARKETING, WHICH IN REALITY WAS ACCURATE IN DESCRIBING THE MESSAGE OF THE STORY Marketing isn't the film. It's the means by which the film is sold. And again, if you have beef with the message or the theme of the film, that's fine. It's a valid criticism to say argue that the film is TOO FEMINIST or whatever. But don't pretend to know a fucking thing about production because you have beef with the message of the film. It just makes you look desperate, and highlights how little you know about film.
>>65058242 THE ORIGINAL MAD MAX MOVIES INSPIRED BORDERLANDS WHICH IN TURN FEEDS BACK INTO THE STYLISTIC FRANKENSTEIN OF 2015'S MAD MAX 4
THE VIDEO GAME MOVIE SINGULARITY WAS YEARS AGO, PARTICULARLY FOR ACTION F L I C K S
THE FIRST ACT DROPS OFF A CLIFF, HIDEOUSLY PACED TRANSITION, THE THIRD ACT REHASHES THE FIRST ACT IN REVERSE, ITS TEDIOUS, ITS LINEAR TO A COMICAL DEGREE
THE COMPOSITING WAS TRANSPARENT IN THE REVENANT WITH THE GOAL OF BEING REALISTICALLY IMMERSIVE, THE COMPOSITING IN MAD MAX WAS TO PUFF UP MORE /v/EDDITRY TO FILL THE SCREEN WITH BIGGER FIREBALLS AND FLAMING GUITARS FLYING AT YOUR FACE IN THREEEDEEE
THERE IS LITERALLY NO MORE VIDEO GAME MOVIE IN EXISTENCE THAN MAD SOMEGUY 4: FURIOUS FURIOSA
You're out of your element trying to form a coherent criticism of film. You've done more than enough to illustrate my point. Next you'd probably talk about why 2001 was a piece of shit because they used front projection to create environments that weren't there.
At this point, seems most of the criticism you have left besides MUH FEMINISM is that MAD MAX IS LIKE A VIDEO GAME. And I don't know how many times it needs to be said that, MOST MOVIES ARE, and even if it was complaint that is somehow more applicable to Mad Max than other relevant genre films, that's not really a complaint. Especially when you're defending the Revenant, whose DP Lubezki has explicitly cited videogame-style immersion as one the goals and inspirations in his experiments with shooting technically-impossible single-take action sequences. You're criticizing one film with a trait that the film you're defending explicitly set out to achieve. You're tap dancing around in circles trying to justify your beef with Mad Max, with anything other than the fact that you don't like that the women characters had agency apparently.
As for implying that Mad Max is ripping off the game that was ripping off Mad Max. Holy shit m8 get it together. Have you even fucking seen Thunderdome? Rhetorical question. Of course you haven't.
>>65060257 That doesn't really answer the question. Kind of an ad hominem deflection tbqhwyf. Dude types in all caps and screams about feminism in action movies. Literally talking about feminism in movies as a social problem. Literally taking to the internettes to decry the social injustice of it all.
