Some fedora-tipper took offence to Plinkett's review and put together a shoddy rebuttal. Guaranteed to be one of the spergiest things you'll ever read and a goldmine of keks.

Tried to skim through it. He does make some good points against RLM such as speculation and some biased opinions, but he defends against it with speculation and biased opinions of his own.

He has the same problems that RLM did in their video. It goes more into a rant of opinions rather than trying to prove all of his introduced claims about RLM not being useful as a good review.

So, yeah, its about the same thing as the RLM videos except with a prequel bias.

I don't like the Plinkett prequel reviews

Many of the arguments he makes could be made against any film (e.g. convenient plot points that don't make sense). It's basically just nitpicking taken to the nth degree.

I like Half in the Bag but Plinkett is overrated as fuck
>>
>>65040822
h-he won that pod race bet?
>>
>>65041181
Some of it is nitpicking but some of it is legitimate criticism. Like the whole Jango Fett trying to assassinate Padme shit is handled incredibly poorly.
>>
>>65041181
Same
I think they're fun to watch but too many people take as gospel because it's cool to rag on the prequels and the Plinked review is something they can point to and say "See it's bad this guy said so"
Not to say they are good movies, simply that people are just going against the grain because that's what's popular now

as opposed to what? Objective opinions? It's a review you absolute moron. Does it bother anyone else that so many people don't understand what the word biased means?

Just one example. Plinkett is nitpicking

purpose, making things even more of a chore to listen to. I don't understand how anyone can
bash Jar Jar Binks on one hand but like Mr. Plinkett on the other. In pretty much any other piece
of entertainment, annoying impressions are brief and last only long enough to make their points.
Annoying characters are shunted into mere supporting roles. In Stoklasa's review, the annoying
impression comes from the narrator, and runs throughout the whole thing. I think his voice is a
one-note joke. If it was ever funny to begin with, it certainly doesn't make me laugh after he
carries on with it for over an hour. Nor do I laugh at his disgusting jokes about murder and rape.

No, his main argument is why the fuck did the bounty hunter decide to use poisonous bugs to kill Padme. A sniper shot would've instantly killed her or having the little droid shoot her would've instantly killed her but instead the bounty hunter used bugs.

The whole point of the Plinkett reviews is that he does nit-pick among the good criticisms. That's why it's a Plinkett review and not a Mike one.

Plinkett is a parody of the stay-at-home psychopathic manchild internet dweller, so criticism of the movies are mixed with exaggerations and whines for the sake of comedy.

How do people on either side not understand this?

Most of his points are toward the excessive green screen and dialog. The story was really stupid too. Most movies have a story that makes sense.

"Watch out for that vicious bounty hunter Boba Fett, Luke. Did I ever tell you about his father? He was hired to assassinate a senator that me and your father were guarding. We kept bringing her around open windows and public areas in order to draw her would be assassin out, but his cunning surprised even us. He had used his payment to hire another bounty hunter to kill the senator for him while he sent us on a wild bantha chase. And then that 2nd assassin used her payment to buy a robot to assassinate the senator for her. Did I mention the 2nd assassin was a shapeshifter? She could have been a good friend in disguise for all we knew! Where was I? Oh yes, then that robot used its payment to buy poisonous bugs to release into the senator's room while she slept, after lasering a hole through the window. It could have just lasered her because we we weren't watching her at all, but it as not a good shot. So we sense the hostile life forms in the room and rush in and save the senator in the nick of time! Then I jumped out the window to chase the robot back to its owner! Luckily it didn't have a self-destruct function. Then we found the 2nd assassin and chased her across the planet, and caught her when she tried to kill us instead of shapeshifting and escaping. But to our surprise, Jango Fett was watching the whole thing instead of going to kill the senator while we were away chasing the bugs chasing the robot chasing the shapeshifter. He shot her with a poisonous dart instead of sniper blaster, and only her instead of shooting all of us or blowing all of us with a rocket or something, then he escaped with his dumb jetpack. Mace Window killed him later, right in front of Boba. Mace was a good friend. Boba is a bad friend."
>>
>>65041692
>There has to a plot device for the protagonists to track down the assassin.
The assassin-droid attempts to kill Padme using a blaster bolt or the stupid dart. The Jedi detect it and manage to capture it. The droid provides clues to lead the Jedi to Kamino.

Or you could have the droid attempt to shoot Padme with that stupid dart but get disrupted by R2 or the Jedi at the last second, causing it to miss. The droid self-destructs to avoid leading the Jedi back to Jango, but the dart provides enough evidence just like in the movie.

It's a horribly done, illogical plot device.
>Movie villains often use elaborate methods to kill the protagonist.
There's no reason for the villain to use an elaborate method to kill Padme though. He's a professional bounty hunter that was hired to kill her. He bears no grudge against her, he wasn't instructed to make her suffer or kill her in a complex way. He was told to kill her and he did it in the most needlessly complex way for no reason.

It really is, for the movie it's in.

It's one big reference to the chariot race scene in Ben-Hur but, in that movie, we not only cared about Judah Ben-Hur's character and development, but we also had to watch real men get painfully rekt as the race goes on.

The podrace, though, is basically a cartoon. Nobody cares that unknown CGI-Alien#4 hit a wall or anything. And Jake Lloyd is bland as fuck even without having pretty much nothing by "Yeah!" or "Yippee!" to say from the script.

There's no point in lingering on it because not much of it means much to us. The point is that Anakin manages to win, that's all. That's all we get from it.

Oh, we also got a cool N64 game.
>>
>>65042698
So he didn't proofread it?
>>
>>65043599

I know right? At least the game was cool, because that scene was there just to sell videogames. I wanted to watch only the podrace scene when I didn't watched TPM yet and the video was 10 minutes long, I couldn't believe it.

It's symptomatic of the prequels. The pod race starts off as cool but it goes on for 3 laps. The same thing can be said of the Mustafar duel in EIII. The fight goes on for way too long and I personally drift off for 80% of it.

That I actually agree with. He bashes the movie for being about space trade taxation, but something stupid like that is seriously what often causes real world conflicts.

Also, Stoklasa bashes on the prequels for taking too much from the original movies, but at the same time loves TFA???
>>
>>65048266
Why make an overconvoluted plot about space taxation and other shit but have nothing meaningful to say about it.

Basically you force the audience to decipher what the fuck is the motivation for the entire fucking plot for zero reward.

>>
>>65048358
>Why make an overconvoluted plot about space taxation and other shit but have nothing meaningful to say about it.
The meaningful aspect is Sheeve's use of chaos/divide and conquer to make his new empire.

The prequels were bad (I actually enjoy 2nd and 3rd one) with a lot of cringey moments, but the movies actually had potential.

I give Lucas credit for his originality as opposed to TFA, which was like watching a new hope with some stuff from empire and a dash of JJ Abrams.
>>
>>65048527
What's the point of being original if it's shit? I'm sorry, but anyone could see TPM was shit before the general reception by the public came out.

>>

>What was on his mind?
Probably way too much.
He wanted to make something new because making fantasy stories bored him. At the same time he wanted to keep his old man child fans from OT. He also wanted new generations to be entertained (kids) while also making a shit tonne of money on the prequels.

His extensive use of computer editing was probably a combination of laziness and a hard on for new technology.

You're talking about star wars here. The whole concept of star wars is basically fairy tale in space. Ergo, clichés doesn't matter shit.
I wouldn't call Palpatine's story for clichéd due to the use of real life situations such as blockades and the issues between democracy and dictatorship.
>>
>>65041287
To be fair, objectivity is an important part of critical analysis. It is completely possible for a critic to dislike (or like) certain themes, genres, actors etc, and still make an unfettered critique of that particular work. That's the difference between an opinion and a review, no one can say or write anything without some form of bias, but a good critic is at least aware of it.

We don't meet Luke until about 20+ minutes into ANH either, so it's not that big a difference

I don't really think you need a single protagonist as audience-surrogate like you did in ANH anyway. It's an important device to help bring the audience into a whole new fantasy world, but with TPM the world was already so well-established and familiar it would have just felt repetitive. May as well start the story at the centre of the Galaxy rather than the edge again

To be fair I think Lucas had a harder job than people realise with the plot of TPM. He needed to balance a lot of things.

In the OT you have Obi-Wan and everyone harking back to this great ideal of the Republic - some kind of perfect democratic society

So objective # 1 of TPM has to be to show how this was true to an extent. It needs to show us what a near-perfect, happy, peaceful galaxy looks like. After spending the OT on the beaten-down edges of the galaxy, we need to see the centre. It needs to be something worth fighting for so we will be sad later on when it falls (this is why it would have been wrong to jump straight in to the clone wars in film #1)

#2: But a perfect, peaceful society makes a boring plot, so there needs to be some peril and problems. However you can't make that peril/conflict too massive and existential because that's for the later films

#3: Then also you need to somehow hint at the greater evil and unease that its to come (Sheev) while still leaving the audience overall with a sense that the galaxy is a good, happy place

So yeah I can see why he went with a relatively minor dispute (a greedy corporation bullying peaceful democracies), but with themes that hinted at bigger problems to come. And kept the conflict largely contained to one world so we get a happy resolution with some unease

Yeah it could have been done better but it was a hard balancing act with those 3 objectives. A lot of the alternatives that RLM and the like put forward would fail to deliver on one or all of those things

They didn't notice until the bug was literally on top of her, and only because Anakin has jesus force powers.

They didn't notice the robot in the minute or two prior to this. I'm not even sure why the robot was still there. It could have released the bugs and fucked off, or it could have shot her and fucked off.
>>
>>65051782
Jango says that they shoul try something more subtle. Who cares that a droid delivers them? It's not like Padme can actually die people. It's amazing how it's been 14 years and people are still harping on something so utterly pointless.
>>

>>

Guess the point is that you don't have to meet you protagonist in the first few scenes of the movie?

Not that I think Anakin is the protagonist anyway - rather that you don't need a Luke style protagonist to ease you into the world, you can just have multiple ones as in ESB, ROTJ, or the latter 2 lord of the rings (see >>65051101
)
>>
>>65051730
>sorry I don't care about being right when I post
Me too.

>>65051799
Yeah it is but my problem with anon's post isn't 3 minutes, it's the idea that Luke and Anakin's entrances into the movies are similarly timed. That "+" anon added to the 20 tries to make it even closer than it really is.
>>
>>65052072
>Guess the point is that you don't have to meet you protagonist in the first few scenes of the movie?
You don't but you meet Anaking much later (32 minutes in is twice the time it took to meet Luke).
>>
>>65051633
>Anakin was using Padme as bait to lure the assassin out of hiding.

- Blade57HRC
>>
>>65046107
Who are you even agreeing with, retard?
>>
>>65051864
That's because the bugs were crawling on the walls and didn't trip the alarm in the floor. Shooting Padme would have broken the glass and they would have been in the room instantly.

The plan still doesn't make any sense though. As you said after the bugs were dropped off the droid should have left immediately. Though in that case it wouldn't have known if they finished the job or not.
>>
>>65051681
Okay...not sure what difference that makes. The point is she was being used as bait and that's why she was near the windows.
>>
>>65051976
Killing her with the bugs will give Zam more time to escape. The Jedi wouldn't discover she was dead until the morning.
>>
>>65052261
That's cause Padme thought Anakin was a creepy perv. They ended up just putting R2 in the room as a compromise.
>>
>>65051772
>That would have tripped the alarm and alerted Anakin and Obi-wan.
>>65052490
>they would have been in the room instantly.
None of that would fucking matter. Padme would already be dead. There's no logical reason to why the droid used bugs instead of shooting her.
>>
>>65051976
Because trying to blow her up didn't work and Jango knows there will be heightened security. If Padme hadn't turned off the cameras they would have easily noticed the droid approaching. And honestly from a cinematic standpoint trying to blow her up twice in the first ten minutes is redundant and boring. It's fine. There are far bigger plot holes in Star Wars like for instance leia knowingly leading the Death Star to the secret rebel base that she had previously sacraficed her home world in order to protect the location of.
>>
>>65052655
>Killing her with the bugs will give Zam more time to escape.
Still makes no sense. The droid could've just shot her and self destructed while Zam is on the other side of the city.
>>
>>65052757
>Because trying to blow her up didn't work and Jango knows there will be heightened security. If Padme hadn't turned off the cameras they would have easily noticed the droid approaching.
This makes no sense senpai. Jango knew there was heightened security so he hired a bounty hunter to use bugs even though a security cam would've seen the droid the second it got to the window? Let's just accept that the bug assassination makes no fucking sense and move on.
>>
>>65052655
Zam didn't need more time to escape, she was far away from Padme's building while the droid was unleashing the bugs.
>>
>>65041604
Sniper rifle? You can clearly see theres a shield that the assasin droid has to "cut"
>>
>>65052730
Yes it would since even with Padme dead they would have chased the droid, found Zam and eventually found Jango the same way they ended up doing.
>>
>>65053262
SELF DESTRUCT.
>>
>>65052730
>>65053262
Also who's to say the droid could have killed her with one shot? What if it missed and she crawled to the floor? Once she yells for help it's game over.
>>
>>65053260
Then the little droid should've shot her.
>>
>>65053342
If it had that function it would have used it while Obi-Wan was hanging off of it.
>>
>>65053364
George, fuck off. The droid probably could've gotten a head shot.
>>
>>65053453
Are you seriously going to continue to defend one of the stupidest parts of the worst Star Wars movie? If you're going to argue "durr it didn't have self destruct" then I'm going to argue Zam should've put a fucking bomb in the robot. Have the robot cut a hole in her window, shoot her and then self destruct. That would've been more logical than what Zam did do. The bug shit was fucking retarded.
>>
>>65053571
I'm not saying the scene makes any sense. Obviously she should have just had the droid self destruct next to Padme's window. The rest of the complaints are nitpicks though.
>>
>>65053492
Yes cause if there's one thing droids in Star Wars are known for it's their marksmanship.
>>
>>65052757
Your second sentence completely contradicts your first sentence. If Jango thought she would have heightened security then why use the little droid at all? Jango should've guessed that a security camera would've seen the droid the second it got close to the window.
>>
>>65045907
>tfw no plane room
>>
>>65040822
>What?

It's fairly true, but it's also an indication of TPM's poor construction. If there is to be a character who is the singular protagonist of The Phantom Menace as it exists, it can only be Qui-Gon Jinn. The action primarily follows him and his decisions, and he dominates the film's screen time. At the same time, this is a mistake on Lucas's part - TPM is a story about beginnings, and Qui-Gon is a man at the end of his journey. Frankly, most of his role in the movie needed to be Obi-Wan's. In fact, in earlier drafts, most of it was. Lucas done goofed and added a character he didn't need late in writing, and as a result, cannibalized one he did need to do it.
>>
>>65052999
It does make sense for them to try something more subtle, even if the logistics are a little wonky. It's Star Wars. I like that they used a unique method to try to kill someone. It led to a fun chase sequence and that was ultimately the point.
>>
>>65053736
Maybe Jango has a mole in Padme's security? How else would he have known about the floor sensors?
>>
>>65053783

>>
>>65053783
