Getting a role comes in 3 parts, in order of importance:

- You fit the look of the role
- You can act
- Nepotism / Pandering

If you're famous then you almost always won't even get an audition, you just get thrown in there because of name and because your work speaks for itself. If you have a beard and the character NEEDS a beard, you will get a part instead of the guy who performed better than you. Same with general look, height, weight, face and voice.

Acting ability always comes second. It helps, but not always. Sometimes you will get a role because you simply look the part, that is entirely it. Elba has a point in that, actually, because if characters aren't created black, black actors can't have that foot in the door.

That said, for the % of the population, they really are over-represented. As someone who looks Latin/Arabic and therefore always thought of as "fucking terrorists", if anything there needs to be a bit less demonising of good arabic/tanned characters. All they get is antagonist or chucklefuck roles.
