Third viewing last night. The flaws were a lot more glaring this time around. Still enjoyed it a lot though

Everything. Best Star Wars movie since ROTJ and possibly the best one after The Empire Strikes Back. Much better than all of the prequels (despite Ewan McGregor's very good performance). Fuck the haters.

Nothing really, it's just kind of "eh".

It's like if a Mary Sue fanfic got big budget financing.

also Kylo looks like Han in the animated part of the Christmas special.
>>

Have you ever considered that people are watching the film multiple times because they enjoyed it, not because they want it to beat some arbitrary box office record that no one but autists care about?
>>
>>64956341
I thought the battle outside the castle was fun at least. Between the fight with the stormtrooper with the baton and the X-Wings strafing the surface of the water, it was pretty exciting, probably the best moment in Star Wars since the OT.

Everything else sucked though
>>
>>64956493

Was seeing it with some friends who hadn't seen it yet. Why you so mad?
>>
James Boyega took over the film. His character was the only worthwhile addition. But it had some logic gaps too. He hated killing but had zero problem murdering brainwashed storm troopers.
>>
>>64956552
What's to enjoy for this movie that required 3 viewings? Like I get watching a movie multiple times. Some are that good and thought provoking that you want to. This movie was a bland by the books no surprises no frills nothing deep generic story starring an unbeatable Mary Sue. It's the kind of movie you watch once, get your junk food fix in and never care about again.
>>
It has made /tv/ the first fast board that appeals to a larger audience(tumblr, reddit, random superhero/star wars movie forums) which means for ad impressions which means more money for 4chan
>>
What went right? Hmmn.

It was entertaining and it didn't seem like it was filmed entirely in front of a green screen. I think that is all i can say.

I went to the midnight release, theatre about three minute walk from where I live.
Went by myself, average experience, highlight for me though was roughly about 2/3 in to the film, I was feeling bloated to fuck and really needed to guff, couldn't be bothered to walk to the toilets, so I cupped my hand and essentially farted into my hand and wafted it directly in the seats behind me where there was a couple sitting.

My biggest issue with her, was they just had her read the cliff notes of the force in that hallway with Rey. Everything she said was the stuff Yoda was teaching Luke, only their training was over the period of at least a week or two. She summed it all up in about 2 or 3 sentences. It was annoying. I really hope in the sequel we get some good one on one training with Luke, and he teaches her in a way that he was taught.

I remember the soundtrack in the OT because it was much more audible, but I think that's a characteristic of old movies. New ones have sound effects that overshadow the score, specially when it's ACTION ACTION ACTION like TFA or Attack of the Clones and ROTS.

I liked these:

TFA had the worst Star Wars score ever and I think it was kind of deliberate because JJ is a retard who doesn't understand the importance of a central score in a Star Wars movie

It actually had the best score in the series since Episode IV. Thinking otherwise demonstrates your inability to discern good from bad, and the need you have for music that overwhelms an entire scene.

Yeah Rey's Theme is good. The March of the Resistance is ok I guess but sounds too much like it's from an Indiana Jones movie imo. I prefer the Jedi Steps:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUBUlKgsNK8

The Prequels had good action themes (A Hero Falls, The Droid Invasion and Duel of the Fates, of course) but also very good quiet and emotional themes (Across the Stars or Anakin's Betrayal).

Referring to Chewbacca as her boyfriend and running a bar actually kept her from falling into the old, wise mentor trope. These aren't the character traits you'd find in a typical children's fantasy film. In fact, she doesn't actually mentor anyone. Han Solo is Rey's mentor.

>Maz Kanata was a Force-sensitive female smuggler who lived for over one thousand years. Although she was Force-sensitive, she was never trained as a Jedi. She wore eye-covering goggles with adaptable lenses with which she would inspect people's eyes to see what they were feeling. Maz Kanata viewed history as a struggle against the dark side, which she believed had many forms, such as the Sith, the Galactic Empire and the First Order. Around thirty years after the Battle of Endor, she owned a castle which played host to travelers, smugglers, and others.
>>
>>64956740

You call this >>64956613 a justification? All you did was say you didn't like it several different ways. Your terms are not convincing, not are they any type of evidence that the movie is terrible.

The movie was entertaining and worth watching multiple times. There's a lot of interesting stuff going on, despite it's simple themes and plots. The characters are well conceived and interact in interesting and engaging ways. The difference and relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren really inform the specific nature of the light and dark side of the force, especially notable that the light side affects them both, despite Kylo's reluctance to accept it. The movie truly felt like the Star Wars that the world came to love, which was something that the prequels were not able to pull off consistently. The film was hopeful and overall themed around a return to form, and respected its audience and their desires.

Now when I say that, I'm not going to get mad at people who don't literally change their mind when they hear it.

Can you really call this debate, you self-celebrating whiner? It's fun to hate a movie, we get it. Do it cool, idiot.
>>
>>64960366
JW didn't get rave reviews, though. And the notion that Disney would waste money paying off reviewers in order to get people to see a movie that everyone was already going to see while refusing to do the same for films that actually require marketing makes no sense.

Finn was the only thing in the film I couldn't stand to be honest.

What the fuck happened, we used to have 30 threads a day on this guys ugliness. And it was even worse then I thought especially seeing his sweaty face on a 70mm screen.

Then to make matters worse, he's eye fucking Rey the whole movie and making it so obvious they're gonna have a romance together in future films.

My suspension of disbelief can only go so far, I feel like I'm on crazy pills that nobody is mentioning this all of a sudden.

JJ thought that giving more screen time to Rey and Finn would make them more likeable. It didn't work. They're godawful.

For the under 5's, and people who are seeing it for the first time.

For everyone else, Bb8 just ruins the movie.
>>
>>64962809
RotJ has some serious fucking pacing issues. It starts four times with Vader on the death star and three separate introductions to Jabba's palace, and the entire middle section of the movie is the gang just wandering around Endor. Sure, the Sheev stuff and the space battle are great, but they make up about 20 total minutes of a two hour movie that's plagued with problems

At least TFA keeps a brisk pace throughout

>For everyone else, Bb8 just ruins the movie.
You're the first person i've ever seen bitch about BB-8.
>>
I enjoyed the forest confrontation. Rey closing her eyes for 15 seconds was dumb but beyond that it was a nice scene. We had character arcs concluding, well edited action that wasnt snap zooms, and a good soundtrack.

Probably my favorite action sequence in the movie. All the ship combat was pretty tame though.

What >>64963416 said. I don't think I've seen more than maybe one person whine about BB-8, and it was on this board, and it was probably you.

TFA is one the worst movies ever made for pacing. It's like we're stuck in a smack addict's head two days after winning the lottery.

I don't need to see fucking Wall-E in a Star Wars movie, either.
>>
>>64963569
>TFA is one the worst movies ever made for pacing
Again with the hyperbole. You can dislike the pacing, but "WORST. PACING. EVER." makes you sound like a 12 year old.
>>
>>64963621
It's seriously as if they lost the real footage and had to stitch it back together with CGI and thousands of set photos from every angle but the right one.

It is meant to be intense, but the lack of a firm perspective causes it to lose ground and seem as if the director had grown bored with the material.
>>

>I don't need to see fucking Wall-E in a Star Wars movie, either.

What made BB-8 any worse than a character like R2D2?

You just WANTED to hate the movie, face it

I liked the movie conceptually. I liked Poe, all of the Stormtroopers and their voices, Phasma, Hux and Kylo. I thought the first act was great, Han's arc was inspired (but undersold) and the ending was perfect. I'm excited about all of that going forward.

I disliked Finn and Rey and BB8, as well as the pacing. That kind of thing can be fixed. Rey's connection with Kylo is interesting. Finn could be a clone, which would be interesting. BB8 could receive a voice chip which would make him less irritating. I just hated seeing the movie stop, and give Bb8 a close-up for a quip scene.

If Rey's monologue with the droid was better written, then I suppose it wouldn't bother me.
>>
>>64963768
These are nebulous non-criticisms. You dislike the film, so you're digging into areas of the movie that are fine in order to dredge up the most ridiculous critiques imaginable.
>>
>>64964210
They're too concerned with how Kylo looks rather than with what he has to say and do.

Kylo has some of the best lines in the movie, but it's more like hearing a great actor read Facebook comments out loud. It's very emotional, but he doesn't have a clear objective. What does he think about the Republic, or about the Empire, or the Order?
>>
>>64956382

I despised it the first time I saw it, but then my family wanted to go see it so I gave it another shot (plus, hey, it's not often you get to see a Star Wars movie in theaters).

It's growing on me and I've come to accept it, but I still have a LOT of problems with it and consider it the worst of the saga.

>i think it was shit, therefore you're opinion is shit
>>
>>64964503
Jesus dude, do you want the film to flat-out state his his internalized feelings? We can gather how he feels about the First Order through his actions, same with Vader.
>>
Everyone claiming the soundtrack is not memorable is because they were exposed to the prequel/OT soundtrack for so long, with repeated listenings/viewings.

Repetition breeds liking. If you listen to something for long enough over and over again, it will seem catchy/memorable.

But she didn't actually say ANYTHING about the Force other than that it surrounds everything.

We knew that from Obi-Wan and Yoda. We knew a lot more from Obi-Wan and Yoda beyond that, too.

And nobody ever said midi-chlorians were the Force. They make life possible and they tell you the will of the Force. That's literally it. That's all Qui-Gon says about them in The Phantom Menace.

And you're misunderstanding the rest of it too. The Jedi didn't forbid love or sex. They forbade ATTACHMENT. And as it turns out, they weren't entirely wrong: Anakin's fear of abandonment and loss is what led him to fall. His redemption was the result of Luke's selfless compassionate sacrifice, but the Jedi have always been all about selfless compassionate sacrifice.

Maz spouts some empty stuff about how the Force flows through everything but never actually tells Rey anything about what it is or what it does besides be apparently omnipresent. Obi-Wan gave us more than that with less time and ceremony in Episode IV, explaining that it binds the galaxy together, controls your actions, and can even obey your commands.

Why is it that the only Star Wars movie to have the word Force in the title tells us and shows us less about the Force than literally any other Star Wars movie?
>>
>>64956341
the traitor scene and breaking po or whatver that han solo rip off was out of the new new death star. also the introduction of kylo was cool and then the movie just kinda went down hill from there
>>
>>64963373

I wouldn't say "ruins" but BB-8 suffers from not having anything to fucking do.

For the first third of the movie, he's cute and friendly and running around with the map, but once we get on the Falcon all he does anymore is reaction shots. He never actually helps anyone do anything, and once we get off Takodana he's basically out of the movie.

R2 gets to run away from Luke at the start of ANH, find out where the tractor beam shutdown stations are, find out where Leia's being held, save everyone from the trash compactor, and try to hold Luke's wounded X-Wing together through the Battle of Yavin before he gets shot.

BB-8 gets to chirp at people, give a thumbs up, and get thrown around the Falcon. Then he gets slotted into Poe's X-Wing, where he continues to do nothing.

Poe could have loaded the map into a rocket and launched it across the desert for Rey to find, and you'd have exactly the same results.

those were valid, he fucking nailed it

>causes it to lose ground and seem as if the director had grown bored with the material.
literally this

J.J. was far too inexperienced for this job
>>
The acting was pretty much uniformly good across the board (excepting Fisher), even if I disliked the characters themselves. Kylo Ren made the movie for me. He is an interesting villain and am curious to see what happens between he and Rey (and Hux) in the sequels.

I liked the light saber battles.

I hated the Finn character and felt he could easily be deleted. I thought Oscar Isaacs played Poe way too peppy. All the whooping in the cockpit after a hit annoyed the shit out of me.

I believe I was part of the last generation to see Star Wars before this whole mess. And yes I do actually like the prequels. TPM is bad but saved by good parts. AOTC is meh and ROTS is actually pretty okay.

literally the exact same thing. Jedi can't know their family and Anakin can't have a gf. This causes him to repress his emotions and lash out.

The Phantom Menace Oscar Nominations: 3
The Force Awakens Oscar Nominations: 5

Now take in mind TPM had to compete with movies of the like of American Beauty, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, The Insider, The Green Mile, etc. and TFA had to compete with... well... The Revenant, Mad Max and The Martian.

That low competition and big Disney behind and they don't even make it out of FX and Sound categories.

Man this board is dying. You can't read a thread in /tv/ without the dumbass Reddit, redditor shit. The one thing I can guarantee about reddit is they don't sit around and spout at its 4chan tier, or 4chaner. Why not have an actual discussion?

Seriously everyone calls each other contrarians, or patricians. But then when this movie first came out everyone fucking loved it. You couldn't go through the catalog without seeing someone being like damn Finn was actually great. Jwe Jew made a good movie.

Who cares if someone likes a movie you don't like and watched it more than once in theatres? Does it effect your life?

When there is obviously an appreciation thread and you don't like it stop trolling and GTFO.

/tv/ is dead

>I highly highly doubt you walked out of Episode 1 after the first viewing and instantly thought "that sucked".

I never said that. I walked out of Ep I feeling confused and alarmed at how 'meh' it all was, what with the incredible hype for it. I was wowed by the special effects though.
It was a few days later when I was dragged to go see it a second time that I realized it did indeed suck.

I didn't feel that way at all about TFA. It mostly made me feel comfy and nostalgic. Ford and JJ really nailed Han Solo again after all these years, and the new cast was alright too. I had not real gripes. It was very safe movie; the plot was a lot like that of ANH
