Is there any other case of a director sperging out, screaming fuck you to his audience but creating at the same time a mini-masterpiece?
you should check out "space runaway ideon" and the final movie "be invoked" which is the direct source material for EoE. everyone dies, most on-screen deaths including little kids, it was the original 'fuck you' to the anime fanbase.
SHINJI SHOULD BE IMAGE FLIPPED SO THE MUGS FACE THE SAME DIRECTION
EOE IS GOAT
LITERALLY ONLY GIRL
INB4 REISHITTERS INB4 REBUILDSHITTERS
i thought they were pretty good. I mean the show was ahead of it's time like Japan was ahead of it's time culture wise. Western youth experienced this kind of despair growing up in the noughties. Other than that it is great Buddhist propaganda that we should all destroy the self.
Fuck off back to your containment board you fucking weeaboo trash
EoE is a 7/10 at best, it's interesting but it's certainly no masterpiece and it pales in comparison to the work of a true surrealist like Lynch or Jodorowsky
>MUH OBSCURE MINOR CHARACTER HIPSTER WAIFU SYNDROME
MISATO IS THE ONLY OTHER CORRECT ANSWER BUT SHE'S NOT A GIRL SO TECHNICALLY NOT BEST GIRL
>YFW ASUKA IS LITERALLY THE ONLY GIRL ON EARTH AFTER EOE
>try to talk about the directorial merits of "entry level" series' like Eva and Bebop on /a/
>"WATCH MORE ANIME HYUK HYUK HYUK THIS SHOW'S BEEN DISCUSSED TO DEATH"
>THIS SHOW'S BEEN DISCUSSED TO DEATH
What's the big deal here? You expect a board to always want to discuss things which they see daily?
I bet you complain when your oldboy threads get shit on here. Fucking newfags need to lurk more.
You wont understand either unless you look up some background information that puts the show into perspective, and also explains things that were never really made clear in the anime.
EoE is meant to be the finale to the tv series, so wont make any sense on it's own.
Yes, Evangelion is quite objectively the natural conclusion to art. Everything before (Renaissance, Modernism) has been leading up to its creation and everything after is merely living in its shadow. This is a gesamtkunstwerk that will be discussed for the ages. It transcends human thought.
There's no point in watching it if you aren't familiar with what is happening and the characters.
If you are talking about animation, yes. It had some amazing staff animating it, like huge influential names, and there is such a limited pool of arthouse anime films that it really is worth seeing. The nods/references aren't important imo, and I say that as a mecha fan
>he saw akira and thought "incomprehensible" = "deep"
Tomino is fucking insane.
It's actually interesting how many similarities Gundam and Eva share. The "get in the robot" scene is very similar to the Bright Slap scene, and the New type trip reminds me of humanity merging in EoE
Does anno even think that, or is that just bullshit fans came up with when they had to justify why they watch japanese cartoons?
All of the 'deep' religions symbolism is just superficial throwing crosses everywhere, there is no meaning behind it
Good point. Many times, things don't mean anything else, no symbolism, who's doing just thinks 'Hey, it looks cool".
I'm not sure if this is the case with Anno, though. Guy is strange.
I belive anno's quoted as saying (paraphrased here) that all of the christian symbolism was just because it looked cool and mysterious since christianity is relatively uncommon and unknown to japan
>THIS SHOW'S BEEN DISCUSSED TO DEATH"
I can understand it, maybe they simply don't want a 1000th thread of the same stuff, unlike /tv/.
But /a/ has shit taste anyway, so you're better if you stay away from that shithole.
C-could someone recommend me an anime?
Officially I detest it, but I've realized I like cute little girls, and edgy plots.
Anime I know I hate:
Naruto, DBZ, Love Hina
If anyone has anything to recommend, I'll watch it.
Especially if it's not entry level bullshit, give me something challenging. But preferably with cute little girls.
As we've all agreed there's nothing wrong with entry level, so long as you are able to move on a develop your own palate.
Spice and Wolf
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
Ghost In The Shell (pretty much all of it)
I think Evangelion is a great case study for genius clashing with self-loathing. I wish more people that hated themselves and were in the midst of a complete and total nervous breakdown would make entertainment media.
I guess it depends, some anime have decent dubs, some are garbage, but usually the nip is as good as, or better than the English one. When in doubt, just get the one with the chingchong audio and the subs.
I'm personally used to subtitles so I don't mind.
I have my own opinions about Paprika, but that doesn't stop me from saying to others that they shouldn't watch it.
Watching what *can* be viewed shit is important to building taste.
As a general rule of thumb the dubs are always, and I mean always shit compared to the subs.
So if you want the the "richer" experience pick the subs, however it might lead to you missing stuff visually because you are trying to read the text on the screen.
However, personally I think at the beginning you can watch the dubs for the shitter shows, provided you switch soon enough to the dubs.
How I did it is that for dub I saw, I watched one sub and it didn't take me long to switch to the subs because you realise how fucking horrible the voice acting is.
Absolute madman indeed
The original. It's actually one of Lynch's best films but I can see why it pissed off Twin Peaks fans when it came out
>finished watching NGE + EoE 3 days ago
>my life feels empty now
try giving madoka magica a watch, cute girls AND a '2deep' plot
>Is there any other case of a director sperging out, screaming fuck you to his audience but creating at the same time a mini-masterpiece?
He even put his own received death threats in the movie.
I think /tv/ knows a thing or two about memes. What do they have on /a/ that's so great? Hit me with your dankest.
I remember one about 'according to keikaku' at one point that was cool.
YELLOW A BEST
WHEN THE TWO GUN TYPES FACE OFF IN THE MOVIE THATS SUM DANK SHIT
>If he was actually good at making movies, nobody would have heard of him. Makes perfect sense if you're /a/utismal enough.
>implying opinion: objective fact
Well, I'm glad that I'm not then.
>Welcome to the NHK
Is it too late to change them, anons?
Ignore all autists and plebs.
There has always been 1(one) best girl since forever.
Show me something impressive then. I've watched the first episode, but the animation has always seemed very low budget to me. Even the action scenes.
>Will I understand EOE if I haven't seen the series?
Yeah you might understand a lot of it. But youre not going to feel shit, because youre not invested in the characters yet.
And we all know Eva is all feelz.
Nice rebuttal against actual criticism. Every scene from that clip has one character performing an action, cut to the other character performing the exact same action. This could be forgiven for a few scenes, but it does it almost through the entire clip. It's monotonous, uninteresting and uninspired animation.
There's ways to illustrate that without copy and pasting the scenes.
But that's your opinion, man.
Nice proof and argument.
>You shouldn't be allowed to call someone else a fag with cute little girl cartoons.
THESE ARE CHINESE CARTOONS
THE CHINESE ARE AUTISTIC

>Evangelion is considered to be masterpiece in anime, a series that did something no other anime even came close to, a feat so ambitious in it's scope and so insane in it's purpose that it confounds viewers to this day
>it had flawed characters
Jesus Christ, you anime babbys really are a daft lot.
Of course there wasn't, but kids who only watch anime saw morally/psychologically complex characters and thought "holy shit this is the greatest work of art in the history of mankind". It's fucking embarrassing.
Evangelion is an allegory for early childhood development as well as the new testament. It serves the same purposes of the bible. Hence "Neon Genesis Evangelion"
It's a simultaneous double whammy metaphor, that's also a neat robot anime on the surface.
>actually a complex sequence involving lots of intricate use of CGI and obviously has a huge budget compared to Madoka
Madoka is actually really good if you give it a chance. It really subverts your expectations that you gather by seeing clips here and there. Watch at least up to episode 4 and then decide if you like it or not. If you really claim to like anime, investing ~1hr into Madoka should be no problem.
>"this is the greatest work of art in the history of mankind"
Nah, they only said it's one of the greatest animes, which is pretty true. You will always find weebs who will glorify Evangelion and say it's the greatest thing ever made but don't generalize, most Eva fans don't think that, they simply say it's good. You will find retards like that in any fandom.
The whole "Anno did it as a fuck you to the fans" is a retarded theory based on commentary from the english voice actors which has been totally discredited. It was always going to be this way, death threats to Anno or not.
Something I've been interested in is the idea that Rei and Asuka were supposed to be a criticism of character types that otaku were into. Some people have said so, but I've never seen anything to back it up.
It's hilarious how much Anno ripped off Ideon. Especially Be Invoked. I actually think the afterlife scene is a lot more moving and better animated than anything in eoe. I also respect Tomino more since he seems to have a dark sense of humor (by making an actual appearance and then being killed off too)
forever laughing at all plebs who never choose this beauty
The only real, alpha, and sane man choice.
Faithful, will cook for you and kind enough to even deal with Asuka's bullshit.
Well I actually haven't gotten around to watching Evangelion yet, so I don't know.
lol @ americlaps being forever mad because their animation industry was completely blown the fuck out.
No makeup Ritsuko is literally best girl.
Come on, would you say no to her?
>lol @ americlaps being forever mad because their animation industry was completely blown the fuck out.
Americans simply care about profits.
So for a while they had the best animators AND animation in the world (Max Fleischer, Chuck Jones, Disney etc.etc.) then they discovered you could make way more money by marketing shitty cartoons done in flash and maya3D to ADD ridden kids.
The problem is that they forgot how to animate well, so even when they try (the latest DC animated movies) they still look like shit without shading, camera wobbling and ugly animation.
Reminder that originally Rei was always considered the best, sexiest, more intelligent and complex girl. Then hipsters started to ironically like Asuka and the thing got out of control. So, it's all a meme. Only Rei can be best girl. Don't fall for their lies.
Asuka is supposed to be the canon best because she's "real" and gets angry, but Rei in the original series fucked up that bitch by actually mattering in the ending.
EoE having a good end is all thanks to Rei giving Shinji a choice.
when I finished eoe for the first time I remember just sitting there and going wew lad, what the fuck was that vI just watched, then I spent the next week reading all sorts of shit on the internet about it, I even tried going on /a/ but instantly regretted that decision, it was a satisfying feel to watch it again after that week and look for clues to confirm your theories.
>i wish my mum was that cool the answer
Even if Disney & others had continued on with hand-drawn animation, it wouldn't have changed anything. Their approach to animation and animated filmmaking in general was extremely limited and short-sighted.
I agree with you, except that Disney movies have never had much shading. They've always been more focused on the motion. Even in the golden age of Disney, most of their work was very flat, with usually 1, maybe 2 tones.
Been four years for me. The initial impression is still very fresh in my mind, and I still have yet to find a series that compares in storytelling ability, symbolism, atmosphere, and raw feeling.
I stopped looking for a series to fill the void that Eva created after a long binge of desperate consumption and simply accepted that hollowness it left me as a testament to Eva's impression on me, like a great and desolate beauty on an otherwise unremarkable plain (pic related, thought of this image).
Learn to love the pain and don't try to replace that cosmic feeling, anon.
If that's the case, then Anno seemed to really misunderstand the nature of moe. It's fantasy, and people fantasize about characters that don't exactly exist in reality and might not even be desireable in reality. Who would want a little sister like Kirino? Nobody, but it's not the same thing in the fantasy context of Oreimo.
I think he understands it. He was very into otakudom in his early career, but he grew sort of disgusted with it and the sort of bubble that many otakus live in, divorced from real experiences and real people. So Eva was his answer, an attempt to have very flawed characters who couldn't be waifuized. And basically to kick otakus in the ass shouting "GO OUTSIDE." Hedgehogs dilemna and all that. Of course, he failed, but I can't fault him for the effort.
>Western youth experienced this kind of despair growing up in the noughties.
literally millennial: the opinion. young people have ALWAYS been angsty edgelords. you and your shitty generation are nothing special, trust me. yours, sincerely, somebody who could be your dad
You really wouldn't. Kirino only works as a moe fantasy when you are in the position of the viewer. The closest real life version of her would be insufferable.
It's a meme that otaku are divorced from real experiences and people, and it's also not the case that making "realistic" anime is somehow automatically superior to fantastical anime.
Kubrick? Except he never really sperged out.
"The creators have to change their frame of mind for the field to advance. And it doesn't look too hopeful in today's Japan. It's in a critical condition right now. I don't think there's any bright future. That's because the people who are producing it are not doing well. But there's also problems in the people who are watching it. The people who make it, and the people who want it, they're always wanting the same things. They've been making only similar things for the past ten years, with no sense of urgency. To get it going once more, you need to force people to go outside, to go out again."
I agree that we can appreciate all types of media, but that's straight from Anno's mouth.
"If you want to get into anime, my best advice to you as a creator is to please have diverse interests in things besides animation. Look outward, first of all. Most anime makers are basically autistic. They have to try and reach out, and truly communicate with others. I would guess that the greatest thing anime has ever achieved is the fact that we're holding a dialogue right here and now."
>Kubrick? Except he never really sperged out.
When will you autists drop this meme? There have been anime threads on /tv/ for a long time now. Anime is TV and cinema. Some topics are cross-board, not confined to just one board.
And why are you even saying this at this point? The thread's been up for ten hours or so with 236 replies.
>tfw Robin Williams would've made a great Gendo
>all the avatar posting in this thread is against the rules.
nah nigga u dont know what avatar posting is
>in other threads, any picture of an actress is considered an avatar by moderation.
We're talking about this thread, not other threads and citation needed.
You sound like a butthurt footfag who is upset that he can't have his feet thread.
