It was unfinished for a long time because this movie was originally part of Paramount's Insurge Division(source: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/paramount-downgrades-low-budget-insurge-783745), which was a sector of Paramount devoted to low budget films made for 5 million or less. The Insurge divison collapsed and folded up and this film(when it was originally called Valencia) was caught in limbo with no studio home. Eventually it was grabbed up by Paramount again and new scenes were written in by Dan Casey to connect the film to the Cloverfield universe so it would actually make some money in theaters. Those new scenes/reshoots were shot in in March 2015 and they've spent the last year editing and adding effects. I'm starting to get a real funny feeling about this film the more and more I dig around. The original script, the fact that none of the original Cloverfield crew are involved(aside from JJ), and the fact that Paramount is releasing a film with a 5 million dollar budget in IMAX, is beginning to seem like a big cash grab for Paramount to make a few quick bucks off of an orphaned movie that they bought up. Yeah, if the movie is good enough to carry the cloverfield shit, I'll be happy. I mean it's too early to say it won't turn out badly, but at this point I'm just happy there's something. It's also worth mentioning that there's very little we can trust of the trailer considering the original Cloverfield's marketing. It could very well just be a shitty thrilled in a bunker, but at the same time that could also just be a huge false lead.

Can you really trust anything about this movie?

These sorts of things are made to be super hush-hush and to have lots of misinformation thrown around.

The original Cloverfield had a hundred different names in production, like "Monstrous" and even fucking "Cheese".

I can't say with any certainty what the development of this movie was like until after it's been released and Paramount can be more comfortable to open their curtains.

Until then, I'm cautiously optimistic. Remember folks, just about everything you read about this movie could be a lie or misinformation. that's how this game works.

Does anyone else think that the end scene of the trailer is the literal end of the movie? She escapes and looks outside and sees... ??? I would guess they'd do one shot of what it's like outside and then hard cut to black. Movie over. It wouldn't be the first time the end of the movie was used in a trailer...

My current theory;

They found a 10 Cloverfield Lane on Long Island. I'm guessing that what happened was that during the events of the first film, Survivalist Goodman flipped his shit and managed to save some random people through some series of events (or perhaps even his kids) and offered them shelter in his bunker. He hunkered down and then the hammerdown protocol happened and NYC and the Long Island area got nuked, right? So now he thinks the world is fucking over, the apocalypse happened or some shit, and he doesn't want to leave because of radioactive fallout and the monsters, and that's why they've been stuck in the bunker. For all they know, the whole world is fucked, but from what's implied by the end of Cloverfield (the tape being property of the US Government), the rest of the United States is more or less still intact.

This wouldn't explain the Louisiana filming, the Swamp Pop, or the sci-fi font/noise at the end of the trailer tho.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a nuke because Americans would never nuke their own soil, leaving radiation for decades to come as well as rads spreading to other cities. Also in the movie they mentioned T-minus 15 minutes until "hammer down". Hammer down is an expression used by A-10 Thunderbolt pilots (Land attack aircraft) when they fire their incendiary rounds. It is likely they mass bombed the city with special incendiary bombs like phosphorous which is an advanced version of napalm consuming up to 5000 degrees and spreads throughout tunnels, alleyways and streets, ideal for a city scenario. This also explains how the camera was able to survive, as it was covered by rocks and it was possible it did not burn through the rocks. Had it been a nuke the camera would not have survived because the entire island would be ground zero.

Something doesn't add up. I'm honestly leaning towards them pussying out on this film being able to stand on its own after they did a rough cut so JJ ordered rewrites to tie the film into the Cloverfield Universe, but had to go with "blood relative" instead of sequel due to how flimsy the connection was.
