Because people put to much value into things. They associate themselves with those things so much it becomes apart of their identity. So when those things are attacked they take it as a personal attack on themselves.

Hell, a ton of online publications seem hell-bent on defending this flick (proof, check out all the articles on Hitfix and the Vox article saying "so what if Rey is a Mary Sue").

Movies like Dark Knight Rises got backlash too, but I don't recall a ton of critics and media outlets going out of their way to defend them from detractors. In fact many of them joined in it.

This is quite frankly the most disgusting, blind example of shilling that I've ever seen. I don't know whether it is because they're just obsessed Star Wars fans or because Disney is paying them off somehow - no other explanation exists for as to why this mediocre (at best) film is getting the raves it is.
