The hum of grandiose declarations, supported only by delusions of mere mortals. One after another they have crawled before the golden gates of the 2 billion mark. Barely standing up,bloody and tearful, trying to grasp it with thier gaze, realizing they will never pass through. They gave thier absolute best, but never reached thier destination. Cursing my name as they are being cemented for eternity to thier pitiful position. Still, i forgave the blasphemy, disregarded thier envy, while i sit on the throne, ever so confident in my divine right as the Emperor Director. The film everyone wait for at least 10 years gets 3rd, while Cameron's orginal stories are first.

All that Disney, all those toys, all that pre-sale, all that marketing for SW (which is a world recognized brand) couldnt beat Cameron.
>>
>>64748391
65% from Sunday, where it had already dropped 36% from Saturday.

It's going to end up at around $120m-$125m total. Because it's going to have such poor weekdays it's going to lose a significant number of screens this weekend to new opening movies, which, along with the competition that these other movies will provide, will only cause it to plummet even further.

China, from what I learned yesterday, counts by opening WEEKS, not weekend. So 7Furious7Fast apparently made $180,000,000 over 7 days. Star wars made $52,000,000 in 2.
>>
>>64745510
Except it's got the biggest opening weekend in China ever. Likely on track to be their biggest opening week. What are you contrarianfags gonna do if the movie ends up beating Cameron? That's literally the last goalpost at this point. We're seriously at the point where "not being the most successful movie EVER" means the movie was a failure.
>>
>>64748779
China apparently measures openings by the first 7 days, since they don't have a standard for Friday openings. Furious 7 made that much in one week, not one weekend.
>>
>>64750417
>>64750491
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/china/opening/

Wrong.
>>
>>64750617
Prove it.

Because all sources are saying "opening weekend" and not "opening week."
>>
>>64750417
Furious 7 made $68,000,000 on its opening day.

In one day, it made more than Star Wars made in two.
>>
>>64750644
>>64750680
I first learned about it from some Chinaman on /tv/ yesterday. But lets looks at this shit:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2016/01/09/box-office-star-wars-the-force-awakens-scores-huge-32m-opening-day-in-china/

Ultron made $33.9 on it's opening day. If they're measuring by first 3 days, that means Ultron made $120 milbos on saturday and sunday. Maybe the chinksmen do things differently, but thats a lot of ground to cover in the 2 days following the opening day. I guess we'll know for sure after the week is over, but it seems more likely that boxofficemojo is referring to opening weeks.

>Opening weekend comparisons are tricky because films tend to open on any old day of the calendar.
>>
>>64750957
Ultron opened on a Tuesday.

>it failed in japan
not really, Hollywood movies have been doing like shit in Japan for years now, the 60 million or something TFA made in Japan is actually good. From Hollywood only Pixar shit and Tom Cruise movies do well in Japan, all they watch is anime and local movies.
>>
>>64751197
Frozen topped the box office in Japan.
>>

that's why I said Pixar shit
>>
>>64751244
It's all Disney, dude.
>>
>>64751122
Yeah I'm aware. They don't release films on a weekend standard, which is why it seems that boxofficemojo's totals are probably on a 7 day standard. Seems more likely that Ultron made $150 after a $33 day opening over 7 days, not 2 or 3. Seems more likely that 7Fast made more than a third of it's total gross over a week, not 3 days.

>>64751259

>>
>>64751275
Yep, and Star Wars is also Disney now.

So you have Frozen, a Disney film that succeeded in Japan, and Star Wars 7, a Disney film that failed to accomplish.

>>64751434

>>
>>64751331
That's fine. I don't give a shit how well Star Wars does in China. I don't determine value for movies by how well they can be dumbed down and translated to the fucking Chinese. It's fucked up enough that they're subsidizing Michael Bay's schlock, and American movies are more-and-more being produced to pander to their shitty sensibilities.

A movie, IMO, isn't a "failure" because the Chinese didn't like it more than fucking 7furious7fast. The fact that there's this much huffpuffery about it is mainly just interesting to me. Look at all these people sucking Chinese as the only remaining way to justify poopooing a Star Wars movie.
>>
Star Wars will make maybe $200 million in China, probably much less. That's just about $800 million short of what it needed to topple Cameron.

Still think it depends on the kind of legs it has. TFA made more in North American markets in three weeks than Avatar did in it's entire run. As a movie with a strong cultural tradition in the West, it's easily broken essentially every relevant box office record there is.

Dances with Fern Gully was made for broad appeal globally, with an easily translatable script and story that basically pandered to anti-western imperialism sentiments. I don't think there were ever many projections that TFA would beat Avatar in global box office.

Also, by the way, what the children that love TFA so much don't really understand is that the "budget" cost you see on wikipedia doens't include marketing / propaganda costs and the "gross revenue" also doesn't include the cuts from the cinemas and the huge taxes and shit.

A movie like TFA has to make three times the amount its budget just to be profitable / not a flop.

Furious 7, Age of Ultron, and Jurassic World had a three-day opening weekend If I remember.
>Although The Force Awakens also scored the biggest ever Chinese Saturday, $33m, its figures pale somewhat in comparison with 2015’s most successful Hollywood films. Fast & Furious 7 opened to a staggering $182.4m in April, while Avengers: Age of Ultron managed $155.7m a month later, and Jurassic World posted $99.1m in June. All were three-day weekend bows, but The Force Awakens’ $52.6m over two days still looks weaker.
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/jan/11/star-wars-the-force-awakens-avatar-china
Right now SW has gained 52 million for the two days, so It might get more than that for the three-day opening weekend.
>>

The Guardian is wrong. See >>64752020

Age of Ultron opened on a Tuesday and hence had a 6-day opening. F7 opened on a Sunday and hence the entire next week was counted as its opening weekend, hence it had a 7-day opening. Jurassic World opened on a Wednesday and hence had a 5-day opening.
>>
Disney will close it's the end of the road
>>
>>64752020
I don't see any reason to think that you know more than me. You seem to be copy pasting shit that disagrees with what the fuck you're saying. THere's been 2 different sources that say China determines opening box office by a week, or explicitly that an "opening weekend" is 7 days.

Furious 7, according to Box Office Mojo, made $182 in it's opening week. Ultron, according to Box Office Mojo, made $155.

Why so angry bruh?
>>
>>64752077

They're citing the opening week totals for Furious 7, Ultron, and Jurassic. Star Wars made more on it's opening day than Ultron and Jurassic. So unless Ultron made ~$33 on it's first day, then $120 on the next 2, that shit is incorrect.

Every industry prediction from before the release had Star Wars way underperforming. B-b- but those damnable redditors! They did it!

People on /tv/ are still claiming Force Awakens will do better, even as it fails in China.

I've been saying for weeks that it would fail in China, while faggots like you told me I was wrong. Now that it's actually happening, it's funny seeing faggots like you move goalposts.

"Oh, nobody ever said it would do better!"
"Oh, box office doesn't matter!"

You were wrong. Learn from it.

You're in a thread where people are still saying it'll do better.

This thread itself is source that people said it will do better.

So it had a bigger opening day then Ultron and Jurassic World. Ultron made $240 total, JW made $228 total. And it will "barely gross $140 there?"

I did. It outperformed every industry prediction on it's opening weekend. Nobody predicted it would make $390 on it's first week. Nobody predicted it would make over $250 on it's second week.

It will make less than $150m in China.

At this point it's going to struggle to beat Titanic.

Jimbros listen to me, the threat is over. Star Wars lost. Now we just have to pray for Titanic.

Star Wars 7 made less than Ultron did on their opening days in China ($33 million vs $33.9 million).

Keep in mind that Ultron opened on a Tuesday and Star Wars 7 opened on a Saturday, and yet Ultron still beat it in China.
>>
>>64752394
Ultron opened higher ($34m to $32m) on a fucking Tuesday, while TFA had a Saturday. Jurassic World's first weekend, which wasn't even its opening (it opened on a Wednesday), is about the same as TFA's 2-day opening ($50m JW to $53 TFA).

TFA just dropped 65% Sunday-to-Monday. Word-of-mouth is incredibly poor and the film is doing far worse than JW on every major Chinese review site. On top of this, because of the poor weekdays it's going to have this week, it's likely to lose a lot of screens this weekend to new openers. On its third fucking day (where it grossed about $7.2m), it's making less than Terminator 5 (final gross $114m) and Mission Impossible 5 (final gross $137m) made on their first days, let alone ACTUAL relevant blockbusters like AoU, JW and F7, whose third days are double (or in the case of F7, triple) the third day of TFA.

Ok. And Ultron made $155 on it's first week. Not sure what your point is. It's apparently much more common for movies to open mid-week than on a Saturday.

>>64752252
I don't really give a shit. Seems like an awfully retarded system to act uppity about, but maybe that's just me. Seems pretty crazy to compare "opening weeks" where some "weeks" are 6 days and some "weeks" are 7. Hardly makes me retarded that I don't trust some hysterical chinaman defending their retarded box office system.

>>64752337
>Source?

>You're in a thread where people are still saying it'll do better.

There's still professionals that think it MAY do better. Avatar was in theaters for over 6 months, and a lot of it's foreign box office was a relatively slow burn. Seems unlikely that TFA will be able to make another billion. Nothing can really compete with Avatar making $2 billion in foreign markets, that's still unprecedented. But it's not really an outlandish suggestion that TFA will probably will end up making more than Titanic.

And my point wasn't that there weren't many projections that it would beat Avatar. There weren't. Anons guessing and hoping and dreaming isn't projections.
>>
>>64753011
It really wont matter after merchandise and whatnot, but yeah the Jews lost at the box office for sure.

Nobody bought Avatar merch, yet everyone is buying Star Wars shit. In the end Disney wins because Star Wars is a sustainable franchise. I don't know anyone that wants to see Avatar 2.
>>
>>64753149
>but yeah the Jews lost at the box office for sure.
TFA broke every box office record there is in the west. It made more than Avatar's total North American gross in 3 weeks.

Avatar made $2 billion in foreign markets. I love that we're at the point where nerds are saying a film "lost" because it didn't appeal to chinamen enough.

I don't mean it lost money, TFA made it in droves, I just mean it wont take the #1 spot over Avatar. Avatar was an anomaly of the highest order.

TFA is huge, HUGE. But Avatar will likely retain the top spot. I wouldn't be upset to see TFA take the top spot and knock the blue elves down a peg, but it probably wont happen.
>>
>>64753257
But anon, Titanic beat TFA domestic in ticket sales. Titanic beat TFA overseas in ticket sales and in unadjusted gross. Titanic blew the fuck out of TFA worldwide in ticket sales and in unadjusted gross.

Does it make you feel better thinking I have any emotional investment in this? I'll be your huckleberry. I can pretend. I'm totally not just here to waste time at work arguing with edgy autists. This means so much to me.

>he thinks TFA hadn't already made 85%+ of its total gross
>he STILL believes TFA will outgross Titanic
I think it probably has made around 80% of it's total gross. Which is why it'll probably beat Titanic. It's at 1.7+ now, needs to get to 2.1. Projected to make over 200 more in China. Projected to make at least 140 more in US. Still performing pretty well in plenty of foreign markets. Seems likely it'll make at least another 400 in the next 5 months.

Not to mention, seems pretty likely that Disney will rerelease this piece before episode 8, and probably again before episode 9. On a long enough timeframe, there's no doubt that it'll beat Titanic.

>HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Wait so I'm the emotional one?
>>
>>64753416
Titanic made $658 million domestically. TFA did that in a few weeks. Titanic made $2.1 worldwide, which TFA will certainly come close to, likely pass.

And if we want to start accounting for inflation 1977 Star Wars is the second highest grossing movie of all time.

Yeah no way it'll make $250. Funny thing is, it'll either happen or it wont. It's likely going to happen. Given that you're apparently so emotionally invested in this, what are you going to do if it does? Hows your cognitive dissonance?

If you want to adjust for inflation Gone With The Wind made over $3 bilbos, according to Guinness. And adjusting for inflation and limiting to "initial theatrical run" is a lot of stipulations. Gone With The Wind was shown through rolling distribution for years, it's "initial theatrical run" was from 1939 to like 1942.

According to Box Office Mojo, Sound of Music and ET also made a higher adjusted gross than Titanic. And Sound of Music is only counting the 1965 "initial theatrical run." So if we don't count rereleases, Sound of Music is the first movie EVER to make over $1b adjusted in only it's initial theatrical run.

why are people arguing over which movie made more money?
>>
>>64757095
Because /tv/ isn't capable of critiquing a film in any meaningful way.
The only way they have to argue about a films quality is it's box office takings.
