How can someone be this stupid? After watching 2001 once you should be able to come up with a simple theory as to what it means.

Actually, to be fair, I've always thought that there were homosexual undertones in parts of 2001 that people don't talk about.

The part where the two crewman are retiring into their pods, after the one goes in, the other's body motion and expression seems to imply a longing.

I didn't get any of those out of their respective films. In 2001, I think at least one of the two guys might have been prison-gay, even they never did anything.

I'm as right wing as you are, but you're letting it get in the way of serious film analysis.

>weird, avant garde sequence follows essentially from the perspective of dave trying to comprehend his forced evolution into the next step of humanity
>reborn as the star child

The fuck is there not to get? It's an extremely intelligent film but it is not avant-garde cinema. I could see people maybe struggling to understand the bedroom sequence at first (basically each film cut introduces himself to a new stage of his life) but beyond that how could you not follow it?

Fuck me, why do people think that dialogue is a necessity for visual story telling? The film shows you everything you need to know

>Symbolism

There is literally no symbolism in 2001 apart from the unconfirmed HAL = IBM theory (and arguably the ageing scene). The truth is 2001 is a pretty straightforward film. I hate when people watch movies that don't hold your hand immediately assume they are trying to be 2deep4u or whatever. The beauty of 2001 is how much it says despite actually being a super simple straight story.
>>
>>64712660

It's even better if you read the books and let Uncle "Don't Touch Me There I'm Begging You Mr Clarke" Clarke explain it in bullet points for you.

>>64712733

At least it's not a David Lynch film. Listening to people "explain" those is like having to sit next to someone who insists on pointing at clouds and explaining what they look like.

>Conan
>"hurrr he's overtly masculinr clearly there is a homoerotic subtext durrr"

Why do people do this? I feel like there is a distinction between enjoying portrayls of masculinity and wanting to have sex with a masculine figure. I never understand this accusation of masculine things being "homoerotic". Like I've heard it directed at the military for instance, that soldiers are all embracing some kind of undercurrent sexually charged male behaviour with each other without realising it. I'm pretty sure that is just friendship and a sense of espirit de corps not that they all want to secretly fuck each other

I am not homophobic, have no reservations toward homosexuality, and I'd own it if I were gay but I'm not. Thinking of naked men does nothing for me, I don't have any kind of sexual stimulation right now thinking about it. I want to be Conan, not fuck him
>>
That's a gross exaggeration of how complex 2001 is. It also fails to consider that some films are meant to be heavily analyzed and clearly have lots of pieces for you to look into, while others have next to no subtext and can be fully understood on the first viewing.

You can easily read too far into a simple movie while reading not far enough into a complex movie with the same level of analysis. It's often easy to see how far the writers and/or directors of a movie want you to look into it.
>>

I think it happened in the seventies and eighties when the gay community decided to take everything stereotypically masculine and own it in a gay way.
>>
>>64712733
This, it's a very intelligent film but there isn't a lot of 2deep4u subtext in it. The last 30 minutes are literally Dave trying to comprehend himself being forced to evolve within a single life time.

2001:A Space Odyssey is quite simply the worst thing to happen to cinema ever. Its forced profundity has caused millions of people all over the world to force themselves to like what is quite simply nothing more than an exercise in style.

Kubrick has no idea what he is doing here. His film jumps around with little to no sense of unity. The great film makers of the world create a series of events that contain clarity of information, something Kubrick couldn't bet his life on.

What is the purpose of what is going on here? Is there any coherent message? I have heard suggestions that it is Kubrick's message about the future of humanity, but what future is that? Does Kubrick even know?

This is Transformers for the art house crowd. Pure style over substance. Nobody actually likes this film, they just like to be seen liking it.

Also HAL is formed by going back one letter in the abecedary from IBM
It's really likely that this is true, but both Clarke and Kubrick denied this. Probably they were afraid of being sued, idk.

You sound like a retard that has only watched two or three Kubrick films. A Clockwork Orange is his only film that could be compared to goreporn. His first three films are film noir, Spartacus is a historical epic, Lolita and Dr. Strangelove are comedies, Barry Lyndon is a period piece, The Shining is a horror film but it relies on psychological horror instead of gore, Full Metal Jacket is a war film, Eyes Wide Shut is a subversion of erotic thrillers. How are those films goreporn?
