Nah, her design is shit, she's just a girl Yoda that's 100 years older (LITERALLY, Yoda is 900 years, she is 1,000 years. Everything is one upped!) and voiced by a young black woman which was also an awful design choice, Lupita is not good at acting above her age based on what I've seen here. She does not make a convincing 1,000 year old Yoda facsimile, they could have found tons of VAs who could have done that but they instead choose the meme beautiful black actress THEN DON'T EVEN USE HER FUCKING BODY IN THE FILM.

My point is the only parts of the movie that aren't mindnumbing action sequences are the beginning with Rey, the cantina and the briefing. The cantina is the longest of those sequences.

Kanjiklub was probably the worst offender there, put in just to make sure the movie didn't slow down enough for fanboys to get angry and start making memes about intergalactic trade routes.

I have never really thought of any of the non-human Star Wars races as being in any way black or white .

I think you could make the argument that there are smaller "breather" scenes between each action set pieces, whther they work is up for opinion though I think consensus is that the movie could have benefited from less action and quiter reflective scenes.

It's not even the tentacle monsters that make the Kanjiklub scene bad, it's how the minute the action slows down, the tension is unwound, suddenly the hand of JJ casts the die of fate and brings another action sequence so he doesn't have to actually write thoughtful dialogue that builds his characters, just Whedonesque millennial "WOW UR THE REAL HAN SOLO???" drivel followed by more brainless action sequences.

JJ will never have something like Luke's training on Dagobah in any movie he makes. Fuck, he didn't even go as deep as Obi-Wan's training on the fucking Falcon. He couldn't hack it. I guess he's at least aware of that and works around his weakness, but it's a pitiful thing to watch.

Eh, I understand the mentality, we're talking about modern day audiences who enjoy a faster pace than the OT, and movies that era. And it sort of has some light character building with how Rey saves Finn or whatever but its too much I agree. I think people keep throwing JJ the blame when there were three screen writers, and cpuntless executives trying their best to maximize profits and in that process make as great a movie as possible. I'm genuinely surprised it turned out watchable, damn near good at all considering the circumstances.
