What was so great about this film that makes it deserving of an Oscar? None of the acting was all that great, it was just Leo and Jonah acting as absurd as possible for 3 hours. It's essentially a comedy film based on subject matter that is watered down in order to appeal to a younger audience.

It was pretty weak by Martin Scorsese standards. It doesn't deserve an oscar for anything. It's competent but forgettable. JJ Abrams could have directed this because "competent but forgettable" is quickly becoming his trademark ever since he finished Lost.

It's fun but not amazing or groundbreaking as much as the hype claims. Or, very good by his standards. He had to be charismatic while behaving in a loathsome manner, and be a very attention grabbing, over the top physical performer while still being realistic. He also had a pretty wide arc in time and personality to cover. I mean, it's not like My Left Foot or something, but it was one of the better thing's Leo has done.

I expect more from Scoresese. I'm not discrediting the 'filmmaking' aspects, I'm discrediting the actual substance of the film. You can be fantastic from a technical standpoint, but the stuff will still fall flat if the subject matter has little to no substance.

Martin Scoresese is always fantastic when it comes to technical aspects of filming, even in his weaker films. But this film does repeat the same beats when it comes to the technical aspects of a Martin Scoresese film.

I think Scoresese can do alot better. I don't really agree with how he chose this subject matter and just decided to put the crime into the background and make the entire movie one 3 hour sex and drug fueled party. He did better on the Boardwalk Empire pilot, which I think technically and substantially, is a much richer 70 mins than the 3 hours of this film.

I enjoy WoWS for what it is, but I don't think its special.

For every interesting crash zoom or undercrank in the Aviator, we get a lot of just flat coverage in films like The Departed. Felt like he had kind of nodded off. Even if the films weren't all that bad (although it doesn't help that he cast Leo in them).

I agree, and I feel this is the issue when it comes to the Wolf of Wall Street, where it feels Scorsese is just getting too self indulgent over actually making something that will stick with people. The thing is when we start comparing WoWS to his mid 90's output, is that I cannot picture this being the same film he would release in his mid 90's state of mind. It's too immature and disregards too much of what is actually the centrepoint of the story (being in this case, the stock market crimes). I geniunely think he dumbed it down and overemphasised the "partying" element of this film to appeal to a wider audience.

I would really like to see how WoWS would be if he played it straight. It's weird thinking he can come out with something like the Boardwalk Empire pilot, which feels like something fitting of his repertoire and then releases something like this, which feels like an ADHD wet dream. It kind of feels like he's just trying to fit in with modern trends at this point. Kind of like how Ridley Scott has deteriorated as well.

I was torn on that. I can see him and Terrence Winter loving that idea of him breaking the 4th Wall and saying "You know what, you don't care. Fuck it".

While at the same time one of the great things about Casino was the very technically complex montage that was cinematically great AND interesting for audiences demonstrating how they skim profits. And I think that maybe a scene like that around the Steve Madden IPO would have demonstrated what Jordan was doing and definitely could have been included at the expense of Jonah's impov shit in the arrest scene.

Yeah, I liked Prometheus from a filmmaking standpoint, but for every Prometheus, there's a Robin Hood and Exodus: God of Kings.

I always felt Ridley Scott was more in his element when doing "more with less". Alien and Blade Runner were largely self contained, and those films tend to stick with me more than Ridley Scott's 90's to the present stuff. I definitely feel oversaturation did play a role in this, though.
