So is this show worth watching? If so when does it hit its prime?

The show is ridiculous. It purports that straight (not bisexual, straight) women can become lesbians, it softens the idea of demons sexually interacting with humans, it is totally anti-masculine, and it culturally appropriates Asian martial arts in a really brazen and incongruous way.

The first 3 seasons are the only worthwhile ones. It ends with her finishing high school. Season 4 picks up with her going to college. It's pretty shit, but the main plot of that season is essentially the origin for what became Cabin in the Woods. Season 5 randomly introduces a little sister for Buffy and it just gets worse and worse. No reason for it to go past high school.

Be aware, some passage of season 4 are the low point of the show, and the 6 and 7 seasons may be a little weird because they intended to end the serie at the fifth.
That said I really think it's a great show overall, and it's worth the watch. As anon said, you want to pick up Angel later. It's slow to start, but it's really good

Angel tried to be grittier and take itself more seriously, which didn't work very well when the bad guys are as silly as they are in the Buffy/Angel universe. Also, the cast for Buffy was, on the whole, stronger. Angel had its moments, and Buffy tends to get remembered only for its strongest period, but Buffy definitely wins in a match-up.

The consensus is that Season 4 is shit, but I've learned that the consensus is often wrong. I find Season 4 and onwards to be Buffy prime, where Joss no longer cares, everything goes batshit insane and the show becomes overtly absurd.

I find the same to be true for Angel, which gets progressively better with time and by season 5 it becomes the best buffyverse material out there.

Only good for SMG's hairy arms. She waxed after the show anyway.
