Well that's where Episoe III was actually kind of neat, the Jedi HAD become corrupt and over powerful. There wa too much of the light side in power in the universe, so to balance itself out the force naturally had it mostly wiped out and replaced for a while by the desk side.
A skin did bring balance to the force, the Jedi just misinterpreted what balance meant.

They're a foil to Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship. These two have managed to work together under the most extreme conditions as a war wages on around them, yet they're still thick as thieves. They're what Anakin and Obi-Wan could have been like had Palpatine not corrupted Anakin's mind. Sad, yet beautiful. George Lucas is truly a master of the craft.
