No. It was just as shit as The New World or whatever that last one with Bale and Farrell was called.

>>64625955

The more I think about it the more I hate it, but it's not as bad as his last 3.

It's semi autobiographical like To The Wonder

Rank his films when you give your opinion of Knight of Cups so I know whether or not to take you seriously.
>>

ah well, at least i can see it for free since i work at a movie theater

Was Malick trying to say something by shooting a movie like they shoot life insurance commercials?

Only true cucks are that obsessed with cuckoldry. Admit it, you love the idea of your Aryan future wife being violated by a strong black man, giving her something you'll never be able to give. You love it because you think it's depraved. The only way for you to intensify the pleasure of being cucked is to develop a deep prejudice against blacks, so your jizz flies across your mom's cobwebbed basement when you jerk your pathetic 18-year old white cock to the thought of a blond virgin girl being brutally spit roasted by a pair of 10 inch negro dicks.

I'm willing to bet my inheritance that most of you white kids who use the word 'cuck' as an insult have a registered blacked.com account.

Malick has never made a bad film. Knight of Cups continues his trend of shedding extraneous plot and narrative to focus on emotions, thoughts and memories brought forward in his trademark fragmented visual and aural style. It, like his other films, is about age old universal themes, in this case the quest for enlightenment and the paradox of beauty. The sermon in the movie says that our now imperfect soul gets a taste of the higher existence it once knew whenever it is confronted with beauty, and so Rick immerses himself in all the beautiful sensual pleasures in the modern Babylon of LA. He is quite literally submerged all the time in ephemeral worldly pleasures, yet he still finds his life empty and devoid of any higher purpose and like his soul longing for a transcendental gratification, he is always by the end again quite literally looking upwards to the heavens for a higher meaning. The movie is an impressionistic retelling of his search for God, the Wonder, nirvana, call it whatever - any metaphysical peak that will give his hollow life meaning. But at the end he realizes that the journey itself is the source for his existential quest, the nourishment for the shadow of perfection his anguished soul seeks.
Knight of Cups is not just any "story" movie, but a sweeping visual symphony of the search for spirituality in an increasingly materialist world.

Since crafting a potently polarising masterpiece with 2011's The Tree Of Life, Malick has become a man on a mission. A mission to stuff a movie so full of coded self-indulgence it seems like a perverse joke that has misplaced its own punchline.

The result is ludicrous self-parody - somewhere between a Calvin Klein aftershave advertisement and a coffee-table book about the modernist mansions of the rich and famous.

I'm just fundamentally at odds with his Christian philosophy of agape.

Consider TOL, where it is presented that sure horrible things happen to people you love, but still believe and love God because hey, you don't know the whole picture.

This requires a presupposition that God exists, God created the universe, and God is concerned with human affairs, as exemplified by the quoted passage from Job.

" An esteemed panel of over sixty film curators, historians, archivists and programmers from festivals, cinematheques and similar organizations around the world participated and were asked to pick the films they thought were the most important of the past decade. The poll’s participants are connected by their leadership in the field of historical film curation, with most having published books, essays and polemics on cinema, bringing perspectives that distinguish this poll from other end-of-the-decade polls."

>>
>>64629415
The Tree of Life doesn't explicitly mention God or whether any divine presence exists or not. That's the beauty of it. You could just as easily argue take an Absurdist interpretation where the human experience is so insignificant compared to the vastness and immutability of the universe that it is silly to ascribe any particular karmic meaning to momentary suffering in our sad little blip of an existence. What meaning we can find is through each other, not pointing towards any grand design, but in our own small universe of each other.

>>64630083

sorry mate, if I go for aggregate proofs of consensus I'm going to be pulling lists from RT that suggest Force Awakens, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Avengers are the best movies of the 21st century

the most important voices when it comes to assessing art are going to be those from people with some actual qualifications. how do you think movies like Tokyo Story and Persona come to prominence? Do you think when they were released audiences were going in droves and proclaiming them masterpieces? No, that's not what happened. Acclaim built for them in art communities and over the years they were introduced into the canon. The New World is revered by basically anyone that is of any prominent seriousness when it comes to film.

Don't be daft.

>all movies about God are inherently about how God exists rather than profoundly intimate looks at characters who are struggling with their faith

Have you even read The Book of Job? If you did you would then understand the movie.

>this is just lame backpedaling from someone who refuses to acknowledge that Malick's movies are massively, massively respected by serious film critics

No, I've just been asking you to back that claim up. You have yet to do that.

>>numerous scenes of humans trying to find cosmic meaning through established manmade institutions and cultural works is proof that the film shows the existence of God

If you don't believe you could never fully understand the Tree of Life.

>Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14

It quotes a book written by humans quoting God. Thus, it quotes God. In the same way quoting the Washington Post's reported comments of Hilary Clinton is quoting Hilary Clinton.

Too bad if you don't believe in the Bible. Malick does. And he quoted God...explicitly.

>Stagecoach was the best film of the 20th century
>>
>>64630611
If people at the time had made a list, sure it would've been.
>>
>>64630531

again, I have now provided multiple sources from a variety of different people in the film business that all testify to The New World being considered as one of the best films of the 21st century. it's okay little buddy, a lot of people think so. it's okay if you don't understand the movie. might I direct you to The Big Short, or perhaps The Revenant might be more to your liking? Go have a fun day at the movies little pal!

>And he quoted God...explicitly.
Too bad he didn't show God explicitly.
>>
>>64630653

That's the point you fucking idiot. You are those people. Have some foresight. Not only can you not prove that The New World is routinely lauded as the best film of the century, you can't even make a reasonable argument toward that. It was a good movie, yes. But by saying "hurr durr it was the best" you are ruling out the possibility of Malick ever besting himself.
>>
>>64630691

No one said he did, idiot.

>Not only can you not prove that The New World is routinely lauded as the best film of the century
It's routinely lauded as one of the best films of the century and by century it is assumed by most people with brains to be until now and they also know that the list can change but for now it is one of the best films made so far in the 21s century and just remember that the list can change but for now it's routinely acknowledged as one of the films made in the last 16 years since this century started but it can also not be considered that by the year 2099 but for now it is until more critically acclaimed films are made in the next 84 years but we haven't reached that time yet so let's just make a list of some of the best films made so far this century and The New World is one that list because the year 2100 hasn't arrived yet since it's still 2016 John Oliver meme so the film is one of the most lauded films of this century, the 21st century that isn't over yet because it isn't.
Happy?

>It's routinely lauded as one of the best films of the century and by century it is assumed by most people with brains to be until now

...that's fine. I'm saying a "best of the decade" doesn't fit the bill for that.

Find any list at all that says The New World is the best film of the century so far. That's the first step to proving the "routine" part of your claim.
>>
>>64630973
I didn't even make the claim, dummy.
You're arguing semantics now.
>>
>>64630884
Are you fucking retarded? First you say best of the century, then your provide two lists of best of the decade. When were those published? 2010? So it's been five years since then.

Yeah, that's the wonder of anonymous discussion! Welcome to 4chan.
>>
>>64631135

Well no, it's indicative of you lying, since the odds of you picking up the conversation at the same time as anon leaving it are extremely rare. Moreover, you seem to have given up your argument, which indicates to me you are just trying to distance yourself from proof of you acting the fool.
>>
>>64631135

Pro-tip: next time post two replies to the person you are having a conversation with, to make it look like at least one point there was two of you responding, as opposed to the suspicious relay.

Oh gosh, TWO people with similar opinions are allowed to exist in the same thread?

>Moreover, you seem to have given up your argument,
I didn't give up on anything because it was never mine in the first place.

>>64631276
Here you go. The point where two people responded to the same post and the conversation branched off. Less than a minute apart too.

He has literally never made a bad film
>>
>>64631352

It's not the opinions are similar. It's that anon magically stopped replying, and you picked up, immediately. The odds of such an occurrence are pretty low.

>>64630411 Is my post.
>>
>>64631508

When you run a camera constantly and literally film everything, you;ll get some pretty sweet stuff when edited.

A true filmmaker has a vision, writes it the fuck down for others to understand, and then creates the project.
