>TFA's "original" planets
>generic desert planet (tatooine ripoff)
>generic cold planet (hoth ripoff)
>generic forest planet (yavin ripoff)
why can't JJ just make better planets?
lucas did it better
The premise of TFA was Disney pulling the strings, fans have taken liberty to shit on the second trilogy at every turn, from the characters to the locations to writing. So they obliged the fans by using real world locations, props save for the occasional character, and better-ish writing. Disney wants the old fans to be happy with their product so they continue to buy it.
>m..m..m.muh world building!
Lmao Lucascucks are grasping at straws now, I'm sorry that JJ had better characters, dialogue, cinematography and coherency compared to the prequels. Lucas fags are literally on suicide watch right now
>30 years after the original trilogy
>x-wings and tie fighters are still being used
at least in the prequel trilogy we got to see a lot of new vehicles but in TFA it's all the same as the OT
you're a faggot and your opinion can go eat dicks
Ad made an alien movie tht was just ET with maybe some Alien mixed in
And made an island show that ripped off Lord of the Flies and The Island of Doctor Moreau. I swear, I've been saying this guy's an unoriginal hack for longer than /tv/ has.
he wanted to emphasize practical effects, and it's very difficult to do the sort of environment Felucia has while also maintaining a reverence for sets and actual environments for the actors to interact with. You may disagree with that decision, but it's a legitimate reason.
>You may disagree with that decision, but it's a legitimate reason.
Nostalgia is a legitimate reason for limiting where you'll let the story go? That's very un-Star Wars if you ask me.
You do realize that their is only a certain level of different climates and planetary types they can show the people can live on?
Hell if JJ had of set the third act on the original lava planet script yous would be just saying his rehashed Mustafar and Lucas
You cant win sometimes
>Hell if JJ had of set the third act on the original lava planet script yous would be just saying his rehashed Mustafar and Lucas
It's really not thst hard to be creative.
Just fuck off.
We haven't seen Planet Ireland in Star Wars before
>Hell if JJ had of set the third act on the original lava planet script yous would be just saying his rehashed Mustafar
And it would be true. Are you saying that JJ actually had a Lava planet in the script before a rewrite? This is unbelievable. It must be a condition. I have never seen a creator so afraid of having their own ideas.
I don't mind the planets, but they could have done better, yeah.
Like, Jakka could have easily been a junk world. And Starkiller Base could have easily been a landscape like the Moon. Maz Kanata could have easily had her place in an asteroid field or near a blackhole or something wild where only people like Han would go.
But they just played it safe.
JJ made all the planets in TFA look like places on Earth, except for a few aliens.
Practical effects are better? Really?
Why are Maz and Snoke average looking mocap CGI then?
Then there is a totally shit CGI monster.
People listen to the official soundbytes and just accept them as facts.
All production techniques are valid if used wisely.
I genuinely cannot think of any environment or tech or alien in TFA which made me go "Wow!"
The environments mainly looked like Earth because they didn't tint them to emulate different sunlight and the trees/plants weren't alien enough.
The last scene looked like what it was. A scene filmed at a real location in Ireland.
The Star Wars universe never looked more parochial or banal that this.
Trying to make it look "real" = failure of the imagination
>In Arndts original script the Starkiller base was on an imperial lava planet.
That's somehow even worse with regards to it being a planet weapon. How would they even do the extensive mining operations required to carve out the side of a lava planet for the gun if THE SURFACE OF THE PLANET IS MOLTEN?
Sorry but you're an idiot.
Those films are pre CGI. They were highly original. They still feel more alien than a much more expensive film utilising much more advanced techniques.
You may despise the Ewoks, that goes without saying, but this old movie took a hell of a lot more time and effort to attempt to portray an alien society than anything in TFA.
TFA is a lazy copy which is afraid to do anything new.
You are an idiot, if you believe films didnt engage in fantastical locations before CG was commonplace.
What is set design? What are matte paintings?
The point is that the original movies and TFA now by extension were created in that the planets and worlds look real and therefore feel real to the audience.
You can claim they are plain and boring to look at, but I would rather take TFA planets over the sterile digital look that nearly every planet in the PT has, creative they might be but that still doesnt excuse they fact that they go against Star Wars original idea.
I liked that a lot too, but what really stuck with me was Ronan's ship. It was like a temple that flew. It would blast around on it's propulsion that looked so much cruder than the sleek Nova ships, and you just got the sense that it was something as ancient and ceremonial and symbolically important to Ronan and his position as the rest of his ensemble. A lot of the interior of it was real sets too, if you watch the behind the scenes.
I look at the new Star Wars, and there are no ship designs or sets that stand out to me really, because it's all just revamped OT stuff. The closest thing is Kylo Ren's design and lightsaber, but even those are just ok.
>Hoth- Snow Planet
>Endor- Forest Planet with a few tree houses
>Asteroid- Just a cave
>Tatooine- Sand Planet recycled twice in ANH and ROTJ
>Yavin 4- Another forest planet with some Aztec type architecture
>Dagobah- Swamp planet
All earth based except Cloud City I will give you that
>Maz Kanata could have easily had her place in an asteroid field or near a blackhole or something wild where only people like Han would go.
Actually thought something like this. GotG, I think, showed that an easy way to make X location cool in a Space movie is to have X location in space. Jail in space, mining colony in a giant head in space, etc. Ancient seedy dive bar in space would have been great.

Not even kidding, think about it.
>no new ships
>just recolored x wings and tie fighters
When will you fags finally understand that the entire point of TFA was "we are back to real Star Wars, fuck prequels shit"?
They made it as OT as possible. To show the old fans that it's back to the roots.
>That ground texture
It literally looks like a video game
You are right
And you are wrong - yes, ad populum is exactly correct, and in this case it is perfectly valid because as that dude said, the value of a movie can only be measured by whether people like it - it then stands to reason that the more people that like a movie, the better it is (as much as you may seek to deny this point).
Therefore if more people like a movie it is necessarily better. What other measure are you going to propose for telling whether a movie is good? Any other standard is just arbitrary wank that you have pulled out of your ass, no matter what pseudo-intellectual bullshit you come up with to try and justify it ("ooh it's got good lighting", "ooh it's got good characterisation", "ooh it's got subtle forebearing and exquisite pacing", etc., ad nauseum).
Go stick a fucking carrot up your asses you pretentious pricks.
There's fucking pine trees on the alien snow planet, seriously JJ has less than zero imagination
Buy into what? It's fucking Star Wars - he didn't need to play it safe. Abrams had an opportunity to have a film with depth and exposition and people still would've seen it. Fuck.
>hey I have an idea for a dropship: Let's build the entrance to the gunning pods on the outside, so that it's virtually impossible for any crewmember to reunit the gun in the unlikely event that the original gunner is killed while flying into a warzone front
Still avoiding the point. How are they not able to be interesting with environments?
Seriously, what does "star wars is back" even mean? The only "prequel"-esque thing about them is the writing.
>why can't JJ just make better planets?
lucas did it better
Are you fucking stupid? The planets are similar because they were designed be.
It's not that he couldn't throw in a new planet, it's that he didn't want to. The movie was supposed to be a ANH soft reboot for new fans.
Ewan was recorded for his lines in Rey's vision
Kylo mentions Snoke should consider a clone army (regarding Finn's betrayal)
were there any else? these were the only ones i caught
He is right, but the reason the new designs aren't as memorable is because we have had hundreds of films about starships in space since the original Star Wars movies. No movie will ever have the same impact on popular culture because things have changed, we aren't as easily surprised anymore.
>but the reason the new designs aren't as memorable is because we have had hundreds of films about starships in space since the original Star Wars movies
