>>64582129 It was written so emotionally and it was a great moment to pass of Ragnar and the Ragnar dying arc was honestly one of the saving graces in writing for this show. Everything about the acting, general writing of that arc and then it's just taken away when he doesn't (and really was never going to) die. If he had died there it had been a great end for him.
>>64582175 I agree, it was very emotional, but killing Ragnar without fleshing out his sons first (Bjorn and Ivar) would have killed the show. >>64582207 Well, he did become duke of normandy IRL, and there's going to be another conflict between him and his brother in s4 so..
>>64582246 I came for the terrible cheese I imagined this show would have and I stayed for the Man of God Ragnar Lothbrok and memecinematography
>>64582261 >>I agree, it was very emotional, but killing Ragnar without fleshing out his sons first (Bjorn and Ivar) would have killed the show. I see your point. I dont even think Bjorn is a good actor, he will be in trouble come season when Ragnar gets killed
>Well, he did become duke of normandy IRL, and there's going to be another conflict between him and his brother in s4 so.. IRL?How much can you really trust the sagas and poems this show is based on? Or are there French acounts for it too?
Seems like their relationship was straighjt from soap opera, again, the show lacked in execution.
but sometimes this show really finds something out of their actors and characters, like whole Ragnar grieving for Athelstan and turning to Christian which was neat.
>>64582380 Oh. I don't think they should've made them brothers in the show. I just don't honestly understand their relationship and Rollo's anger that well in the show. It's lacking, really lacking. I don't feel it.
>>64582430 I think they wanted to make Rollo an antagonist way too early on. They should have made him and Ragnar way closer at the beginning of the show, and have him subtly drift apart ( because of Lagertha, Ragnar's fame, etc.. ) to make his "betrayal" (more like going his own way) cleaner.
One of the best moments in the show are those when Ragnar gets into trouble because of his dick, because honestly he feels bit Gary Stu to me and one of the few times he has shit blowing up in his face is when he thinks with his dick.
Like early episodes with Ragnar, Aslaugh and Lagertha meeting are hilarious comedy.
>>64582589 I for myself like the arc of Ragnar grieving Athelstan and turning to Christian very much - and I'm atheist which is funny. I guess the actor nailed his emotions for that role.
I guess a lot of people don't know about the actual legends behind Ragnar('s Sons) and Rollo. If you want some spoilers, I'll write them out here.
Ragnar >His sons are more famous than he is >Loðbrók is a title which means "Hairy Breeches," which was given to him after Aslaug made him some impenetrable breeches before he sailed to England. >Ragnar dies when King Aella captures him and throws him in a pit of snakes. The breeches save him, so they pull him out, strip him, and throw him back in. >Ragnar's sons go full invasion made after his death >Ivar the Boneless is a clever son of a bitch, and one of his stories is telling one of the English king's during parlay that "all they want is as much land as a cow covers). The English agree, and Ivar cuts the cow into such tiny pieces and scatter the pieces over such a large area that they get a whole city for their land. >Ragnar's third wife, Þora, hasn't been mentioned in the show and probably won't be. >Ragnar has never been proven to be real (historically), but his sons have been.
Rollo >Not Ragnar's brother, they are years apart. >After the norsemen threaten Frank lands, the King offers Rollo land and a title in exchange for defense against the other norsemen. That land is Normandy. >Unlike other norse conquerers, Rollo fully integrates with the French and in one generation all of the settling norsemen only speak French. >Successfully defends against other norsemen. His descendants eventually go on to conquer England.
Floki >Discovered Iceland hundreds of years after the show takes place. Nothing else of note, really.
>>64583123 It's ambitious to try to weave all this to a one show. This needs at least like what, 8 seasons to cover ALL of their legends?
Some of the execution and writing is off, like Floki. Grating character to say the least and the less screentime he has the better the episode is (Same with Athelstan, the actor was just incredibly bad most of the time)
>>64583123 I wrote all that off memory, so there may be a clerical error somewhere in there.
The last thing I want to mention is that the fuckers are speaking Icelandic in the show as opposed to Old Norse. Sure, I believe they are using Old Norse words, but the Icelandic pronunciation (especially "Ég" instead of "ek") kills me after all the work I've put into learning ON. The absolute worst was the early episodes of Season 3, when Lagertha and the King are speaking and they rely on the priest to translate. I'm nearly positive they were using Old English for the King (which came about post-norse influence) - I could understand most things he said via Old Norse, yet Lagertha acted like she hadn't a clue. It bothered my poor linguistic heart.
>>64583379 >The last thing I want to mention is that the fuckers are speaking Icelandic in the show as opposed to Old Norse Well the way language is done in the show, it's really not that important.
Everyone speaks English within their community (muh TRANSLATED FOR VIEWERS) and then spout some shit against Englishmen in whatever language and after one episode they've all taught the opposing side their language and now everyone speaks English
>dat episode where Ragnar takes up Athelstan's body near the waterfall and says 'this is as close to your God I can take you' Sometimes this show really hits the feels and its in those moments its good.
